The First Day of Fall
The morning sun painted the school courtyard in shades of gold. Students were chatting, laughing, and rushing to classes — but Aisha stood still, her fingers nervously clutching the strap of her bag. It was her first day in Riverside High School, a new city, a new life — and maybe, a chance to forget the strange shadows of her past. Everyone said she was kind and quiet, the kind of girl who always smiled even when her eyes told another story. But deep inside, she knew something about her wasn’t normal — sometimes she heard her own voice whispering things she never meant to say. As she entered the classroom, two boys caught her attention — Arjun, the confident, charming senior everyone admired; and Rehan, the silent, mysterious boy sitting near the window. Their eyes met hers, and for a moment, time seemed to stop. “Hey, new girl! You can sit here,” Arjun said with an easy smile. Before she could answer, Rehan’s voice came softly from the back — “Don’t. You don’t know what he hides behind that smile.” Aisha froze. Two boys, one heart, and a truth that even she didn’t fully understand. Because sometimes, when the world went quiet — another version of her would wake up inside. The classroom buzzed with laughter and gossip, yet Aisha sat near the window, watching the clouds drift lazily across the blue sky. Something about the morning felt strange — like a memory she couldn’t fully recall. When the bell rang, the door opened, and he walked in — Arjun, the new transfer student. His eyes were calm but unreadable, a mix of charm and something darker hidden underneath. The girls whispered, the boys stared, and Aisha… she just froze. Their eyes met for a brief second, and it felt as if time had stopped. Her heartbeat raced, and an odd voice echoed in her mind — “You’ve seen him before.” She blinked hard. No… I haven’t. Have I? Arjun took the empty seat next to her. “Hi, I’m Arjun,” he said with a polite smile. Aisha nodded shyly. “I’m Aisha.” The teacher’s voice faded into the background as she noticed the way Arjun’s pen tapped on the desk — slow, steady, then suddenly fast, like a rhythm shifting with his mood. At lunch, her best friend Riya teased, “New guy already sitting beside you! You attract trouble, Aisha.” Aisha laughed softly. “He’s just… different.” “Different how?” Riya asked. “I don’t know yet,” Aisha murmured. That evening, Aisha couldn’t focus on her homework. Her diary lay open, half-filled with scattered thoughts: > “Why do I feel like I know him? His eyes were familiar — calm but stormy. Like two souls fighting inside one body.” She closed the diary quickly when she heard her mother calling for dinner. But as she turned off the lamp, she saw a message pop up on her phone — from an unknown number: > “You shouldn’t have talked to him.” Her heart skipped a beat. Who was this? Before she could reply, the message disappeared — deleted automatically. The next morning, Arjun wasn’t at school. Riya said he might be sick, but Aisha couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. On her desk, she found a folded paper note. It said — > “You’ll understand soon. But stay away from me.” Her fingers trembled as she read the words. The handwriting… it looked just like hers. End of Chapter 1: The Message Aisha’s eyes stayed fixed on the paper note, her mind spinning in confusion. Her own handwriting… but she never wrote it. Outside, the wind howled against the classroom windows, as if whispering a warning only she could hear. She folded the note quickly and slipped it into her diary. “Who are you, Arjun?” she whispered under her breath. Somewhere deep inside, she felt a strange pull — a connection she didn’t understand yet. And far away, in the dark corner of the campus, someone watched her through the shadows… smiling. > “The game has just begun.”
