THE DISCOVERY
The eerie sounds of the owls and every other living and breathing nocturnal creature that encamped in Mystique Falls filtered into the still air of the night causing Hailey Brentwood to toss and turn in her bed, rousing her subconscious and causing sweat to break on her small frame. She was coming down with a rather unnatural fever but did absolutely nothing to quell the effect of it. Maggie, her roommate on the other hand was fond of enjoying her sleep after drinking booze on her night out with friends. “What are you looking at? Pour me a scotch mate...didn’t Mama tell you to not stare at pretty women?” Maggie voiced in her sleep, startling the half awake woman in the room. “My goodness Maggie, the new day is just starting. Take it easy. You drink too much for a lady, be responsible. Damnnnnn.” Hailey replied, sitting up to watch her sleep and smile. Just as Maggie instinctively turned in the opposite direction to continue her blissful sleep, her neck was left bare and pulsating and despite how dimly lit the room was at that moment, Hailey could see very clearly and even hear her heart beat softly, as clear as patters of rain on the rooftop on a wet day. She was awash with a sudden pang of immense hunger and thirst for the blood of the exquisite blond that lay asleep with her back to her, wheezing silently and snoring from heavy alcoholism the night before, after hanging out with her usual crew from college that host reunions quarterly. “What is happening to me? Why do I find Maggie so delectable all of a sudden? What is happening in my head? This can’t be right, it can’t be right. I am not a lesbian nor bisexual. No, I am not. What then is this rummaging hunger for her flesh on my lips?” All these unanswered questions raced through her thoughts like the wines made at the Italian Potomac she used to read about in travel books. Like a hunter going for the kill, Hailey moved the frisky blond hair of the sleeping roommate and sank her teeth inside the soft skin that protected her neck and she drank to the trepidation of Maggie who moaned softly and jerked awake and on impulse, turned on the bedside lamp to illuminate the dimly lit room. Her eyes widened in shock and utter disbelief when she beheld a strangely different creature with the looks of her roommate, save for the fangs she saw. By this time, color had left Maggie’s crystal blue eyes and she was terrified to say the least. In fear, she peed in her pants and soaked up the flowery bed sheets. Maggie struggled to speak but swallowed forcefully past her parched throat, she was petrified and felt like she was in a very bad dream or the booze was certainly playing tricks on her, so she thought. Just then, Hailey spoke while wiping the bloodied corners of her mouth..."Oh my goodness, what just happened? Maggie, are you hurt? Oh s**t! s**t! s**t! Of course, you are hurt....there are two gaping holes in your neck. I didn't mean to do that Maggie. I'm sorry, really sorry." Maggie moved as though a police officer tased her, when Hailey tried to touch her. "Get away from me, you monster. You are one of them. Jeez!!! I have been housing one of them since forever. How could you do this to me?" "I don't understand what you mean." "Don't you dare lie to me Hailey. This explains the big appetite and your constant diarrhea. You are one of those filthy and pesky supernatural beings that think themselves above mortals. I used to fantasize meeting one of your kind and I am graced with the presence of one who is or rather was my best friend and now I am utterly thrown off balance with the discovery of this fact." Maggie could not help but wonder where she got the morale to form coherent sentences or the shock absorbers to process the scenery with human comprehension when she should have been the fidgeting person she has always been who is afraid of spiders. Quite ironic. The stench of the hot expulsion of urine that lay in spread out torrents with the encircled layers on the sheets hit the nostrils of Hailey faster than it reached Maggie's nasal cavity and she knew she had to do something to calm her friend down and possibly make her forget about it. She thought long and hard. Maggie was making her way to the bathroom, to change up when Hailey overtook her hasty steps with swift speed and was in front of her. "I can fix this Maggie, just trust me." With those words, Hailey locked her gaze intently at the blue orbs of Maggie's existence, piercing into her soul and speaking these words... "Forget what you saw today. It never happened. You had too much to drink with your friends last night and couldn't place a finger on your timer to use the bathroom. Due to that, you peed your pants and woke up feeling conscious and set to change your clothes before Hailey wakes. Also, for the gaping holes in your neck, you went hiking and some tsetse flies or weird bug bit you. Wash and apply ointment on it daily, it will clear out. Forget seeing me this morning or having this conversation. Are we clear?" Hailey could hear the thumping of her own heart, she just needed Maggie to nod her head in the affirmative to confirm exactly what hidden powers she harnessed. And viola, Maggie nodded and went on like someone who just had their memory erased...like the concept of the Ancient Greeks comparing a growing child to a tabula-rassa, meaning clean slate. "Phew, time out. I just compelled someone? Am I possessed by a demon or demons or what exactly is this? I don't have ancestry with anything supernatural, so what is this chivalry with reality playing with me today? I have a long work presentation today and I might not even be as coordinated for it. Oh Venice and all the merchants of old, save me." Hailey muttered inwardly. She was disturbed while she lay down to continue in her reprieve. Just then, she heard the bathroom tap running and Maggie was whistling to a tune while having a shower. This was surprising because, the bathroom is quite a considerable distance from the bedroom and there was no way anyone other than a vampire, werewolf or hybrid could possess such a heightened sense of hearing. She just knew she was one of the trio and was hellbent on finding how she became the one thing she loathed the most...Time will tell.
