Lyra Ashbourne was rejected by her mate in front of her entire pack humiliated for a flaw she never chose, cast aside by an Alpha who called her unfit to rule beside him. She built herself back up anyway: months of grueling training under a healer who saw what Kael never did, until her hands could do what no ordinary wolf's could. She wasn't looking for another mate. She was looking for herself. Then Rowan Frost walked into her territory and felt something no wolf mistakes for coincidence and said nothing. Because the moment word spreads of what Lyra truly is, she won't just be someone's rejected mate anymore. She'll be the most hunted Vessel in three centuries, and the ancient Council that has erased every wolf like her before now knows her name. Lyra didn't survive one betrayal to become anyone's prize. This time, she intends to be the one who decides how the story ends mate bond, ancient enemies, and all.

The Rejection
The scent of the whole pack was a wall of iron and pine, and I was standing right in the middle of it, waiting to become someone's Luna. I should have known something was wrong the second Kael's eyes slid past me before they landed on me. A mate bond doesn't hesitate. It doesn't measure a person before it looks at them. But I'd spent nineteen years telling myself that the ache in my chest whenever he was near meant everything was fine, that the bond would fix what I couldn't the fact that I had never shifted, not once, not even when the moon was so full it felt like it was screaming my name. "Lyra Ashbourne." Kael said my name the way you'd read an item off a list you wanted checked and forgotten. "Step forward." I did. My legs felt like they belonged to someone braver. Around us, the entire clearing had gone silent, hundreds of pack members packed shoulder to shoulder beneath torchlight, waiting for their Alpha to claim the mate the moon had chosen for him. My father stood near the front, chin high, already smiling like the ceremony was over and had gone exactly the way he'd bragged it would for weeks. My mother's hand was pressed so hard against her mouth I could see her knuckles whiten from here. I looked for warmth in Kael's face and found none. Only calculation. "I've made my decision," he said, loud enough to carry to the back rows, loud enough that there would be no pretending later that this hadn't happened exactly the way it was about to happen. "I reject the bond." The clearing didn't even gasp. It was worse than that — a held breath, a silence so total I could hear my own heartbeat stutter and trip over itself. "Kael—" I started, but he wasn't finished. "A wolf who cannot shift cannot stand beside an Alpha," he said, and this time he did look at me, and it was almost worse than when he hadn't. There was no cruelty in his expression. Just certainty. "I need a Luna capable of leading this pack in battle, in ritual, in every way that requires her to be more than human in a wolf's skin. You cannot give me that, Lyra. I won't apologize for choosing what my pack needs over what the moon decided for us." The bond didn't break quietly. It felt like something being torn out of my chest by the root, a physical wrenching that dropped me to one knee before I even understood I was falling. Somewhere far away, I heard my mother cry out. I heard murmurs ripple through the crowd — pity, some of it, but under the pity, something uglier. Relief. Agreement. I made myself stand back up. That was the only act of defiance left available to me. "Then I release you too," I said, and my voice only shook a little. "Alpha." I didn't wait for his reaction. I turned and walked out of that clearing with my spine straight and my eyes dry, and I didn't let myself break until I was three streets away, alone, doubled over against the cold brick wall of the town's old apothecary with my hand pressed so hard against my sternum I thought I might bruise myself trying to hold the pieces in. That's where Dr. Mara Ellis found me — not because she was looking for me, she told me later, but because she'd felt something c***k through the pack bond that had nothing to do with a shift and everything to do with a soul splitting in half. "Child," she said, crouching in front of me with a steadiness that made me want to cry harder, not less. "Breathe. Whatever just happened to you, you survived it. That's the whole job right now. Just breathe." "He rejected me," I said, and saying it out loud made it real in a way the pain hadn't. "In front of everyone." Mara's jaw tightened. "Then he's a fool," she said simply. "And fools tend to discover exactly how foolish they've been. Usually far too late to matter." I didn't believe her. Not that night. That night, I only believed the hollow place in my chest where a bond used to live, and the four hundred faces that had watched it happen without a single one stepping forward to stop it. I didn't know yet that this rejection wasn't only about my shift. I didn't know that somewhere far above the pack politics that had just destroyed me, a decision had already been made about what I was — and that the ceremony I'd just survived had been engineered, in ways I couldn't yet imagine, by someone who wanted me isolated long before he ever came looking for me. I only knew that the ache spreading through my palms right now, sharp and strange and unlike anything a rejection should feel like, wasn't grief at all. It was something waking up.
