Chapter One: The Last Audition
The rain arrived before dawn. By the time Ethan Brooks stepped off the crowded bus, the city had become a blur of gray skies and shimmering puddles. He pulled the zipper of his worn hoodie to his chin and glanced at the old theater across the street. The bright banner hanging above its entrance fluttered wildly in the wind. NATIONAL STAR SEARCH AUDITIONS One Winner. One Life Changed Forever. His heart pounded. "This is it," he whispered. For six years, those three words had become his prayer. Behind him, the rest of the band slowly gathered beneath the cracked bus shelter. Ava Carter hugged herself against the cold. Even in oversized clothes, there was something graceful about her. She smiled at Ethan, though he could see the fear hidden behind her eyes. "You barely slept, did you?" she asked softly. Ethan forced a smile. "I'll sleep after we win." Kai laughed. "Or after they reject us." Nobody laughed with him. The joke hit too close to the truth. Noah adjusted the keyboard strapped to his back while Liam checked the strings on his guitar for what felt like the hundredth time. Maya stood quietly with her hands clasped together, whispering a prayer under her breath. Sophia, the youngest member of the group, looked up at the theater with wide eyes. "My mom used to say this place was where dreams were born." Kai muttered under his breath. "Dreams... or where they come to die." Ethan heard him. He wished he hadn't. Inside the theater, hundreds of hopeful singers crowded the waiting hall. Some warmed up their voices. Others rehearsed dance routines. Several wore expensive designer clothes and carried instruments worth more than Ethan had earned in the last five years. He looked down at his faded sneakers. The soles were beginning to peel away. He quietly pushed his feet beneath the chair. He didn't want anyone noticing. "Band number seventy-three." A woman called from the stage. "Please get ready." Their number. Ethan looked at his friends. No words were needed. They had rehearsed this moment more than they had rehearsed the song itself. One by one, they climbed onto the stage. The bright lights blinded them. Beyond them sat three judges behind a polished black table. None of them smiled. One was checking emails on his laptop. Another flipped lazily through a folder. The oldest judge simply looked... bored. Ethan swallowed. "Good morning." No response. "We're..." his voice caught for a second. "...we're Midnight Echo." The oldest judge finally looked up. "You have five minutes." Nothing more. No encouragement. No welcome. Just five minutes. Ethan nodded toward Noah. The piano began. Soft. Gentle. Almost fragile. Then Liam's guitar joined in, followed by Kai's steady rhythm. Finally... Ava opened her mouth. Her voice floated across the silent theater like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. Every note carried years of hope. Years of pain. Years of believing tomorrow would finally be different. Ethan joined her on the chorus. Their voices blended perfectly. For a brief moment, he forgot where he was. Forgot the judges. Forgot the empty wallet in his pocket. Forgot the eviction notice waiting at home. All that existed... ...was music. The final note lingered in the air before fading into silence. Ethan slowly opened his eyes. His chest rose with anticipation. No one spoke. The oldest judge removed his glasses. "You can sing." Hope bloomed inside Ethan's heart. "But..." That single word crushed it instantly. "...talent isn't enough." Judge Two leaned back in his chair. "The market wants excitement." Judge Three folded his arms. "You sound too... ordinary." Ordinary. Six years. Reduced to one word. Ethan stared at them, unable to speak. "We've written every song ourselves," Ava said quietly. The judges exchanged glances. "We appreciate your effort," the oldest judge replied. "But effort doesn't sell tickets." A cold silence filled the room. Then came the sentence Ethan would remember for the rest of his life. "You'll never become stars." Something inside him shattered. Rain poured harder as the seven friends left the theater. No one spoke. Not until Kai suddenly ripped the contestant badge from around his neck and threw it into the flooded street. "I'm done!" His voice echoed between the buildings. "I'm tired!" "I've worked two jobs just to buy drumsticks!" "I skipped meals!" "I sold my motorcycle!" "For what?" He laughed bitterly. "So three strangers can tell us we're ordinary?" Noah looked away. "My landlord gave me until Friday." Maya lowered her eyes. "My father says I should stop embarrassing the family." Sophia quietly touched the silver necklace around her neck. "I was going to sell this after the audition." Everyone looked at her. "It belonged to my mom." Ava grabbed her hand. "No." "We need money." "But—" "We need food more." Tears filled Ava's eyes. Ethan couldn't bear to watch. He walked toward the edge of the sidewalk where rainwater rushed through the gutters like a river. Was this really the end? Had six years been nothing more than a beautiful mistake? Behind him, Kai spoke again. "Maybe the judges are right." No one answered. Because somewhere deep inside... They were all wondering the same thing. The rain continued long after darkness swallowed the city. Streetlights flickered one by one. The roads emptied. Only the seven friends remained, walking without destination. None of them noticed the figure standing across the street. Watching. Waiting. His black umbrella remained closed despite the rain. Not a single drop touched his tailored suit. He smiled as though he had finally found something he had been searching for. In his gloved hand rested seven identical black envelopes. Each already bore a name written in silver ink. Ethan. Ava. Kai. Noah. Liam. Maya. Sophia. The man looked toward the dark sky. Then he whispered to himself, "At last..." "...the next choir has arrived." A distant church bell rang. Once. Twice. Then... A thirteenth time. The stranger smiled wider. No church in the city had ever rung thirteen times. Yet tonight... One had. End of Chapter One
