Chapter1
The woodland seemed to pulsate with its vitality as Lucy Everett dashed through the thick foliage, each breath scorching her throat. Her hair lashed against her face in the wind's frenzy, yet she persisted, undeterred by the blur before her eyes. The pursuit was imminent—by a creature swift and relentless. The thudding of its strides, the crackling of underbrush, and the resonant growls that filled the night air confirmed its presence. She was not alone in this chase. "Persist, Lucy! Do not cease your escape, and do not glance behind," a sharp, insistent voice commanded. "Identify yourself!" Lucy demanded, her pace unyielding, her muscles protesting the exertion. The voice had been a specter in her mind for days, now alarmingly close. "This is not the time for inquiries—move!" the voice retorted. Tripping over a branch, Lucy crashed to the forest floor. "Curses!" she spat out, but the insistent tone of the voice spurred her to her feet. The growls were now ominously near. "I cannot sustain this flight indefinitely!" she protested, yet her strides did not falter. "I am here to defend you. Trust is essential." "Trust an anonymous voice? Unlikely!" she countered, her breathing labored. Suddenly, the voice commanded with increased ferocity, "Duck this instant!" Instinctively, Lucy dropped to the ground as a massive, shadowy figure soared over her, colliding with a tree, the force of its snarl shaking her to the core. "Good heavens!" she exhaled, crawling back in terror. The creature remained unseen, but its malevolent aura was palpable, non-human. The voice returned, stern and forceful. "Lucy, you must act—immediately." "Not until you clarify this madness!" she insisted, regaining her footing and retreating from the unseen adversary. Though her eyes darted about, all she discerned was a faint shimmer in the moonlight, as if a colossal entity observed her from the obscurity of the woods. The voice, now gruff and weary, conceded, "You inherited your father's obstinacy. Very well, you seek the truth? I am no mere voice. I am a werewolf, your guardian." Lucy's blood ran cold. "A what?" "You understood correctly. I bear a curse. My appearance is hidden, yet I can offer you protection. That is the paramount concern." She had no time for disbelief. The sounds of pursuit resumed, this time more thunderous. The previous attacker had not yet relented; it was preparing another assault. "You must place your trust in me, Lucy. I can lead you to safety, but you must heed my guidance," the voice implored, now with a calming yet intense cadence. Her fists clenched, her heart racing, Lucy questioned, "Why should I place my faith in you? You could be deceiving me. Perhaps you are the predator." "I have twice preserved your life. Consider that," the voice reasoned. The logic struck her. She inhaled sharply, her body tense with anxiety. "Agreed. But should this lead to my demise, I shall haunt you." A dark chuckle emanated from the voice. "Agreed." Upon her acceptance, the atmosphere shifted. "Head north, toward the river. Thirty feet. Hasten." This time, Lucy did not hesitate. She surged through the forest, her body protesting, her focus anchored to the guiding voice. The growling intensified, more ferocious than before. The beast was closing in. "Ten more feet," the voice encouraged. "You're nearly there." Her breathing shallow, her body on the brink of collapse, Lucy wondered what she was fleeing from. It was no ordinary creature—there was a profound malignancy in the energy that enveloped her. "Leap!" the voice commanded. Without a second thought, Lucy jumped, narrowly avoiding a large rock before tumbling onto the riverbank. Soaked, she turned to see a dark blur disappear into the dense forest. "It has departed—for now," the voice stated, more serene. Lucy rose, soaked and shaking. "What was that entity?" "A rogue," the voice answered with a growl. "Another werewolf, but unlike me, he is unhinged." Lucy felt her world spinning. "Another werewolf? This is absurd." "I wish it were not so," the voice replied, pausing as if weighing its next words. "This place is no longer safe for you. He will return." Her resolve hardened. "Why is this occurring? Why am I a target?" The voice hesitated before revealing, "It concerns more than just him. They all are drawn to you because of the curse." "What curse?" Lucy's heartbeat accelerated. **Why was she kept in the dark about this?** "Your lineage," the voice spoke softly. "It is afflicted. You are afflicted." Staring into the dark forest, anger surged within Lucy. "And you chose not to disclose this earlier?" "Would you have believed me?" the voice retorted, unfazed by her indignation. Lucy felt the urge to lash out, to take action, rather than remain here, soaked and chilled, surrounded by unanswered questions. "What do you seek from me?" she demanded. "What is the meaning of all this?" "I desire to assist you," the voice said, its tone slightly gentler. "There's more at play than you realize." Her fists remained balled, her gaze fixed on the wilderness as her mind whirled in turmoil. Her father had vanished, her life was unraveling, and now an invisible werewolf claimed she was cursed. It overwhelmed her. "I am unaware of your identity," she murmured, her voice cracking. "Why would you concern yourself with me?" The voice was silent for a moment before responding with unexpected gravity, "I was acquainted with your father." Lucy's breath hitched. "In what manner?" "I was present the night he vanished." Her heart thundered. "You were **there**?" She swallowed hard, her voice a mix of anger and desperation. "What became of him? Where is he?" "I am ignorant of his fate," the voice conceded, its tone laden with sorrow. "I attempted to intervene. I lacked the strength." Fresh fury washed over Lucy. "Cease these riddles! If you possess knowledge regarding my father, disclose it!" The voice tensed. "I am revealing all that I can at this moment. Your father endeavored to lift the curse, but something went awry. Now, you are their objective." Lucy gritted her teeth, overwhelmed with frustration. "You persist in mentioning 'them.' Who are 'they'? Werewolves?" "Not solely werewolves," the voice responded its tone now chillingly earnest. "**The Keepers.** They oppose the curse's dissolution. They will do anything to maintain it." "The Keepers?" Lucy echoed, struggling to grasp the magnitude of the situation. The voice interjected sharply, "You are in peril, Lucy. Far greater than you can conceive. You must vacate this town immediately." But before she could reply, a low growl resounded through the forest once more, this time alarmingly close. Her body tensed, and the hair on her neck stood on end. The voice returned, imperative and commanding. "Run."
