Oh, she would deny it of course, but the fact is Dahlia has always been in charge. Of the three of us, Dahlia, Betsy and me, Dahlia has always been the leader. She will tell you it is because she is a year older than Betsy and me, so, we just naturally look to up to her. There may be some truth in that, but it is more complicated. Dahlia is simply the most caring insightful hard working take-charge woman I know. She has never failed to place others before herself. She is a dedicated mother and to her credit a devoted domestic disciplinarian. In her home, she rules the roost. Just ask her husband, Jeremy, and her daughter, Emma, who is following in her mother’s footsteps.
We three first came together in Sister Mary Ignatia’s second grade classroom. We have been inseparable ever since. It was pure happenstance Betsy and I even met Dahlia. She had been held back and made to repeat second grade because of a serious bout with rheumatic fever. Sometimes I wonder how different our lives might have been had we not met her. Oh, we have had our differences over the years, but we have always worked things out. We have stuck with each other like three peas in a pod.
