Chapter 4

Remember the moment we defended you," Kai seized his neck and asked sharply. Why don't you return it before I sink my fangs into your neck, old man? I can't disobey the moon goddess! Zef said, "That's bullshit, do anything you can." Finally giving up, the necromancer said, "I have this temporary protection spell I might try." Don't blame me if the Lycan King ends up killing you, he warned, before chanting some Latin words that caused a brilliant light to emanate from within Alpha Kai and Alpha Zef's chest and disappear. However, what is the deal with mates? Why don't you just... This is the domain of the moon goddess. The situation is fixed, and I have no control over it. You can't have a conversation with her, he added, "unless you go up there yourself." Kai sneered, "You're useless," as he rolled his eyes at him. Stop stalling, it's not worth it. After a short while of chatting, Zef waved me into the car. That doesn't help, though, because I could hear their disagreements from where I sit. "So we'll both have to settle for a second best?" Everything we've ever had, Zef, we've shared. That won't happen, Kai remarked, his voice tinged with displeasure. After a long sigh, Zef asked, "Why are you yelling at me like it's my fault?" This is the lot we've been dealt, I suppose. How sweet of the moon goddess... he trailed off, then smirked, "You know it could be fun in bed." Be serious, even if only this once," Kai rolled his eyes at Zef. Are you truly allowing this to take place?” Remember, we're twins; the old guy said it himself: our very existence is forbidden. Zef stared at him and said, "Of course not." Clamping his teeth together, Kai said, "I don't like sharing what's mine." Zef chimed in, "Neither do I." “So? OK, so what happens next? Shall we divide her between us?” For one full minute, neither of them budge from their stubborn stare. They appeared to be capable of killing anyone who dared to disturb them. When I saw them, I stopped the car and said, "I have a proposition. Either of you is fine with me, or neither.” Irritated, they looked at me and said, "No!” Zef's mouth dropped open in a crooked grin at that moment. "You know what this means, Kai." Kai agreed, saying, "Yep, definitely." They both gave me a knowing grin, and I asked, "What?" Just what do you two intend to do?""If we both want you and can't have you, then we'll have to battle for you. Let's see who comes out on top," Zef said. As soon as Kai got ahold of my right hand, he shouted, "Oh, bring it on. I'll definitely win her." To which Zef interrupted, moving to my left hand and said, "Sure sure, let's see in the future." Disgusted, I glared at them and asked, "You're treating me like a prize in a game?" To which I replied, "Why? Isn't that your purpose?" Kai questioned. That's right, I'll make the pair of them fight for me. If I can't win and escape from them, there's no use in trying to outwit them. Tsk. I don't even grasp what's going on in their brains. These twin alphas. Okay, I'm going to try to keep my cool for the time being and see what happens. Zef took me back to my room while Kai went off to do some contemplating, and when we arrived back there was complete silence. "Promise?" he asked when I told him, "Remember, you're mine. Don't listen to Kai from now on." Not gonna happen, I shrugged. Get settled in, Zef added, and Samantha will be right there to give you a tour. I can't relax knowing they're walking around like time bombs. Since this is merely a temporary situation, I should probably start looking about so I can move on with my escape plan. It wasn't long before the door opened and a she-wolf emerged, ending my wait. A friendly smile spread across her face as she said, "Hi, I'm Samantha, and Zef, I'll be happy to assist you." Yes, my name is Bethel, and I nodded. "So," I said, "you want a tour?" Tired as I was, I nodded, thinking, "Yes, I need to know the way in and out of here." I counted about fifty people in the main hall of the pack house and she said, "Good, then let's go." We joined arms. I was a stray wolf when the twins took me in; they may not be kind and have a bad reputation, but they aid a lot of us here; we're the abandoned. I know it must be strange for you to suddenly live in a strange environment, but trust me; you'll get used to it. I looked at her quizzically. Is she referring about the same twin I was thinking of? The way she goes on and on with such enthusiasm whenever she mentions them annoys me. I'd rather go hungry alone than have to deal with them. They have their own rivers, training grounds, rooms, comfortable beds to lie on, and even a library with historical events; they do not have to worry about losing food and starving. My impressions, however, faded as soon as she finished showing me around. It must be lovely to have a worry-free, comfortable lifestyle as I once enjoyed. I said, "Not bad," secretly wishing that my group might have such a pleasant home. To which I replied, "Right? I'm sure you'll love it here." Love is overrated, of course; if anything, I'm just searching for an excuse to exact vengeance on Samantha, but she doesn't need to know that. She enquired, "So how's the alpha to you?" My response was a shrug: "Uhm... they killed my father and my mate. How could I say they are good?" She looked at me pityingly and said, "Oh, I apologize for what happened. But at least they got you here and let you live for free and with protection." My first impression of her was quickly replaced by skepticism. She then said softly, "Don't touch Zef again; he's mine." Oh, she's a dreamer; now I see her true colors instead of the good, good girlie ones I was led to believe existed. If you have any questions or concerns, she winked, "Are we clear? She said, "I'm sure you must be hungry. Here's the dining hall." before leading me to yet another busy area. After saying this, she left to go buy some dinner for me. I pretended not to mind that the other wolves were staring at me since I really just want to go back to my chamber. Samantha returned, this time bearing a dish of meat. As in, "Here, eat." I nodded and was about to dig in when someone interrupted me. Silence fell as Alpha Kai came up to me, smelt the food, and said to Samantha, "I see what you're trying to do, Samantha. Whatever you're planning, back off." Innocently, Samantha asked, "What? I'm not-" When Kai exclaimed, "You just tried to poison my mate," everyone around him gasped, but not at the term "poison." In disdain, Samantha asked, "Mate? Her? A rogue one?" After a moment of silence, Kai said, "Yes. Now if any of you attempt to make another scene like this, your heads are going to fly off. Understood?" Samantha rolled her eyes at me, while the others nodded their heads. After taking stock of the situation, Kai snatched my hand and exclaimed, "Let's go, Bethel."
