THE GIRL IN THE BACKGROUND
Chapter One: The Woman Everyone Noticed
Ella had spent years being overlooked.
It wasn't that she was unattractive. She had warm eyes, a genuine smile, and a quiet confidence. But whenever she stood beside her best friend, Goodness Adeyemi, none of that seemed to matter.
Goodness had a presence that naturally drew people in. Rooms seemed to brighten when she entered them. People remembered her name, laughed at her jokes, and gravitated toward her without effort.
Ella had made peace with it long ago.
They had been best friends since university. Despite their differences, they balanced each other perfectly. Goodness was outgoing and magnetic; Ella was thoughtful and observant. Their friendship had survived years because it was built on genuine affection.
Still, being constantly overlooked came with its own quiet ache.
One Saturday evening, they attended a birthday gathering hosted by Priya, one of Goodness's coworkers.
As expected, the room shifted the moment Goodness walked in. Friends greeted her enthusiastically while Ella quietly slipped toward the drinks table.
Priya hugged Goodness warmly before turning to Ella with a smile.
"You're always in the background next to her, aren't you?"
She meant it as a joke.
Ella smiled.
"That's me."
Later, while standing near a bookshelf, she noticed two men.
The first was Felix Okafor, confident and charming. Within minutes of arriving, he had found Goodness and was already making her laugh.
The second was Andrew.
Unlike Felix, Andrew wasn't trying to command attention. He stood quietly observing the room, studying people rather than performing for them.
Ella found herself watching him.
Eventually introductions were made.
Felix was exactly as funny as he seemed. Andrew, however, surprised her.
When they shook hands, he glanced at her earrings.
"I like those."
It wasn't flirtatious. Just honest.
More importantly, he was looking directly at her.
"Thank you," she replied.
It was a small moment, but it stayed with her.
On the drive home, Goodness talked about Felix.
"He's funny."
"He is," Ella agreed.
"And Andrew seems nice."
Ella looked out the window.
"Some people are."
She said nothing more.
But she couldn't stop thinking about Andrew.
