Chapter 2: The Broadcast

503 Words
Isabelle remained seated by the café window, her fingers wrapped around the warm coffee cup as the television continued its breaking news report. The anchor's voice echoed through the quiet room. «"Authorities have confirmed that the mysterious woman linked to multiple identities has once again evaded capture. Intelligence agencies from several countries are now working together in what officials describe as the largest manhunt in modern history."» The customers exchanged uneasy glances. "I heard she hacked a government database," a man whispered. "They say she's an assassin," another replied. "No," an elderly woman interrupted. "My grandson said she's a billionaire who disappeared years ago." Everyone had a theory. Everyone was wrong. Isabelle lowered her gaze, hiding the faint smile tugging at the corner of her lips. It amazed her how easily the world accepted lies when the truth was too unbelievable to imagine. The waitress returned with a slice of cheesecake. "On the house, Emma." "Thank you." Emma. Another name. Another life. The sweet old woman had no idea that the quiet customer she had served every Tuesday for three years was the same woman every intelligence agency on Earth was desperately trying to find. Before Isabelle could take another bite, her smartwatch vibrated once. A coded message flashed across the screen. THREE HOSTILES. SOUTH ENTRANCE. LEAVE IN NINETY SECONDS. Without changing her expression, she took another sip of coffee. To anyone watching, she looked completely relaxed. Inside, her mind had already mapped six escape routes, identified every exit, and calculated the movement of every person in the café. The front door opened. Three men entered, dressed like ordinary office workers. Ordinary-except they weren't. Their eyes scanned the room with military precision. One paused briefly on Isabelle before looking away. She had expected that. Her current appearance was flawless. Dark hair, soft makeup, simple clothes, and prescription glasses made her look forgettable. Exactly as planned. One of the men spoke quietly into the microphone hidden beneath his collar. "Negative. She's not here." Isabelle almost laughed. If only he knew. The waitress leaned closer. "Everything alright, dear?" "Perfect," Isabelle replied gently. She reached into her purse, leaving enough cash to cover the bill and a generous tip. As she stood, a little girl accidentally bumped into her. "I'm sorry!" "It's okay." Isabelle smiled warmly and helped the child pick up her dropped crayons. "Don't lose your colors," she said softly. The little girl grinned before running back to her mother. For a brief moment, Isabelle wished her own life had been that simple. She adjusted her backpack and walked calmly toward the rear exit. The three agents never looked at her twice. The door closed behind her. Five seconds later, the café's lights flickered. Ten seconds later, every surveillance camera within two blocks froze on the same frame. By the time the systems rebooted, the woman known as Emma had vanished. Somewhere else in the city, another identity was already coming to life. The hunt continued. But the hunter was still several moves ahead.
