Chapter 4: A Meeting Written in Shadows

546 Words
Adrian stood across the street from Riverside Financial Tower, his eyes fixed on the shimmering glass building. Something about it felt wrong. His instincts, the ones that had earned him a reputation for exposing impossible stories, refused to let him walk away. Inside the tower, Isabelle read the coded message on her phone one last time before deleting it. ADRIAN HAYES. OUTSIDE. SOUTH ENTRANCE. A faint smile crossed her lips. "So," she whispered, "you've finally found me." She slipped the phone into her pocket and walked toward the elevator. The executives continued discussing the financial crisis she had uncovered, unaware that their consultant had already shifted her focus to something far more important. The elevator doors opened into the lobby. Without looking directly at him, Isabelle saw Adrian through the revolving glass doors. He was pretending to read messages on his phone, but his eyes never stopped studying everyone who left the building. He was observant. Patient. Different from the others. Most hunters relied on weapons. Adrian relied on questions. Isabelle adjusted her sunglasses and stepped outside. She passed within a few feet of him. He glanced up for only a second. A woman in a navy suit. Elegant. Professional. Nothing unusual. Yet something about her eyes made him hesitate. They were strangely familiar. Before he could react, she disappeared into the crowd. Adrian frowned. "Why does she feel... familiar?" Ignoring the thought would have been easier. Instead, he followed. --- Isabelle led him through the busy streets without ever looking back. She knew he was there. Every reflection in every shop window confirmed it. She deliberately slowed her pace, allowing him to keep up. Let's see how far you'll go, she thought. After several blocks, she entered an old bookstore tucked between two historic buildings. Adrian waited a few seconds before following. The tiny bell above the door rang softly. Rows of dusty books stretched from floor to ceiling. The shop was empty. Except for the elderly owner. "Can I help you?" the old man asked. "I'm looking for the woman who just came in." The owner adjusted his glasses. "A woman?" "Yes. Navy suit. About five foot seven." The old man looked genuinely puzzled. "Son, you've been the only customer here for the last hour." Adrian's heart skipped. Impossible. He had watched her walk inside. He searched every aisle. Nothing. No back door. No open windows. She had vanished. Again. --- From a rooftop across the street, Isabelle watched him through a pair of compact binoculars. A soft laugh escaped her. "You notice details," she murmured. "But you're still looking where I want you to look." Her earpiece crackled. "Status?" "He's exactly where I expected." "Should we remove him?" Her expression hardened. "No." "He'll become a problem." "Not yet." She lowered the binoculars. "He's not my enemy." Far below, Adrian stepped out of the bookstore, frustrated but more determined than ever. He had chased countless stories, but none had ever disappeared before his eyes. As he looked up, he caught the brief silhouette of a woman standing on a nearby rooftop. Before he could focus, she stepped back into the shadows. For the first time, Adrian wasn't sure whether he was chasing a person... ...or someone who had been quietly leading him all along.
