Chapter 5: The Invitation

552 Words
Adrian couldn't shake the feeling that the woman on the rooftop had been watching him. He hurried across the street and entered the neighboring building, taking the stairs two at a time. By the time he reached the roof, the wind was the only thing waiting for him. No footprints. No discarded items. No sign that anyone had been there. Except for a single black envelope resting against the rooftop door. His pulse quickened. The envelope had no address, no fingerprints, and no seal. Inside was a single card. Stop looking for the woman who never existed. Adrian turned the card over. Another message was written in elegant handwriting. You're asking the right questions. You're following the wrong people. He stared at the words. This wasn't a threat. It was guidance. Someone wanted him to keep digging-but in a different direction. --- Two miles away, Isabelle stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling window in a luxurious penthouse that wasn't registered under any name. She had changed identities again. Claire Donovan was gone. Now she was Sophia Bennett, an art collector hosting a private charity gala that evening. Her trusted associate, Ethan, entered the room. "He found the message." "I knew he would." "You could have ended this today." "I don't eliminate people for being curious." Ethan folded his arms. "Curiosity gets people killed." "Not if they learn when to stop." She looked out over the city below. "Adrian Hayes isn't like the others. He wants the truth, not the reward." "And if he discovers who you really are?" "He won't." Her answer was calm, but even she knew it wasn't a certainty anymore. --- That evening, the city's elite gathered beneath glittering chandeliers at the charity gala. Politicians. Business leaders. Foreign diplomats. Billionaires. Every powerful name was present. None of them knew the woman greeting their guests was the same person the world's intelligence agencies had failed to capture. Isabelle moved effortlessly through the crowd, smiling, listening, observing. She noticed everything. Every nervous glance. Every whispered conversation. Every hidden motive. Then she saw him. Adrian. He wasn't on the guest list. Yet somehow, he'd found a way inside. Disguised as a freelance photographer, he blended in with the media team, his camera hanging from his shoulder. Isabelle almost smiled. Impressive. He was getting better. As Adrian lifted his camera, their eyes met across the ballroom. For a brief second, the noise around them seemed to disappear. He recognized the eyes. Not the face. Not the hairstyle. Just the eyes. The same calm, unreadable eyes he had seen in photographs, outside the tower, and on the rooftop. Before he could reach her, the ballroom lights suddenly went out. A gasp rippled through the crowd. Emergency lights flickered on seconds later. People looked around in confusion. When the lights fully returned, the elegant hostess had vanished. In her place, a small silver card lay on the marble floor. Adrian picked it up. Three words were written in the same elegant handwriting: Find the truth. As he looked up, he realized something chilling. She hadn't escaped because of the blackout. The blackout had happened because she wanted to disappear. And for the first time, Adrian understood one thing with absolute certainty. The woman he was chasing wasn't simply surviving the hunt. She was controlling it.
