Chapter 6: The First Clue

549 Words
Adrian stood motionless in the center of the ballroom, the silver card still clutched in his hand. Find the truth. The words echoed in his mind. This wasn't the first time she had slipped away. But it was the first time she had left him a message twice. She wanted him to keep searching. The question was... why? "Sir?" A security guard approached him. "We're asking all guests to remain inside until the building has been cleared." Adrian nodded absentmindedly, his attention fixed on the crowd. Politicians complained about the interruption, reporters chased rumors, and wealthy guests demanded answers. No one noticed the woman dressed as a catering assistant quietly pushing a food trolley toward the service elevator. No one except Adrian. His heart skipped. The eyes. Without hesitation, he pushed through the crowd. "Hey! Wait!" The woman didn't look back. She entered the service elevator just as Adrian reached it. The doors slid shut. He slammed his hand against the button. "Come on..." The elevator descended. Adrian sprinted toward the emergency stairs. --- Isabelle removed her catering cap as the elevator reached the basement. Another identity discarded. Waiting beside a black luxury sedan was Ethan. "You let him see you," he said. "I wanted to know if he'd notice." "And?" "He did." Ethan sighed. "He's becoming a problem." "No," Isabelle replied calmly as she entered the car. "He's becoming interesting." The sedan pulled away just as Adrian burst into the underground parking garage. Rows of vehicles filled the space. The black sedan was already disappearing up the exit ramp. Adrian memorized part of the license plate. XK-714... Before he could write it down, a delivery truck passed between them. When it cleared, the sedan was gone. Again. He laughed bitterly. "One day..." --- That night, Adrian returned to his apartment. His investigation board now covered an entire wall. Photographs. Maps. Identity documents. Security footage. The silver card. And now... The partial license plate. He pinned it beside the others. As he stepped back, something caught his eye. Every place where the mysterious woman had appeared formed a pattern on the city map. A perfect circle. The center of that circle was an abandoned government research facility that had been closed nearly twenty years earlier. Adrian frowned. "Why there?" He grabbed his keys. --- Elsewhere, in a hidden command center beneath an unremarkable estate, Isabelle watched dozens of monitors displaying live feeds from across the city. One screen showed Adrian leaving his apartment. Another tracked his route. A third highlighted his destination. Ethan looked at her. "He's heading for the facility." "I know." "Should I stop him?" Isabelle was silent for a moment. Then she smiled. "No." "You want him to find it?" "I want him to find exactly what I've decided he should find." She tapped a key on the console. A hidden vault beneath the abandoned facility unlocked automatically. Inside, a single file rose from a secure compartment. Its cover bore only four words. PROJECT: NEVER EXISTED As Adrian's car disappeared into the night, Isabelle leaned back in her chair. "The game has entered its next phase," she whispered. For the first time since Adrian had begun chasing her, she wasn't just staying ahead of him. She was leading him exactly where she wanted him to go.
