The Trap within The Truth

Chapter 7: The Trap Within the Truth As Adrian's car disappeared into the night, Isabelle remained seated in the dimly lit room, her fingers lightly resting on the edge of the desk. On the large screen before her, a blinking icon marked Adrian's location as he drove farther away. She smiled. "Right on schedule." With a single keystroke, the file labeled PROJECT: NEVER EXISTED vanished from the monitor, encrypting itself into a code that only she could unlock. The room fell silent. Then every monitor around her suddenly came alive. A calm female voice echoed through hidden speakers. "Warning. Unauthorized access detected." Isabelle's expression didn't change. "So... you've finally found me." Far away, inside the headquarters of the Global Intelligence Alliance, alarms blared across every floor. "We've got movement!" "Someone accessed Project: Never Existed!" Analysts rushed to their stations while giant screens displayed streams of encrypted data. "Can you trace it?" "No, sir." "What do you mean no?" "The signal appeared for three seconds... then split into hundreds of different locations." Maps lit up across the world. Tokyo. London. Dubai. Lagos. New York. Berlin. Every location showed the same digital fingerprint. The director stared at the screen. "Impossible..." "She's making us chase ghosts." Unknown to everyone in the command center, every location was fake. Every signal had been planted months ago. Exactly as Isabelle had planned. --- Meanwhile, Adrian pulled into the underground parking garage of his apartment. He couldn't stop thinking about the words he'd seen. PROJECT: NEVER EXISTED. What was it? A government operation? A classified experiment? Or was it connected to Isabelle herself? As he stepped out of his car, he noticed a small brown envelope tucked beneath the windshield wiper. There was no name. No stamp. Only a single black symbol—a phoenix rising from flames. His heartbeat quickened. He opened the envelope. Inside was a single photograph. It showed a little girl standing in front of a burning building. Her face was partly hidden, but Adrian immediately recognized the eyes. They were Isabelle's. Written on the back were six chilling words. She died twenty years ago. Adrian's breath caught. "That's impossible..." --- High above the city, Isabelle stood on the rooftop of an abandoned building, watching through a high-powered scope. She knew Adrian had opened the envelope. She knew exactly what he was thinking. "He'll start asking the wrong questions," she whispered. "And every wrong question brings him closer to the right answer." A soft voice spoke from behind her. "They're mobilizing every agency." Without turning around, Isabelle answered calmly. "I expected nothing less." "The Council has approved full authorization." "They've declared you the highest-priority target." For a brief moment, the wind howled across the rooftop. Then Isabelle smiled. "They've finally made their move." She slipped a silver pendant from around her neck and looked at the faded engraving. E.I. The only reminder of the life the world believed had ended in flames. "They buried a little girl," she said quietly. "They never realized..." "...she survived." With that, she disappeared into the darkness before the helicopter circling above could catch even a glimpse of her. Behind her, the city glittered peacefully, unaware that the woman everyone was searching for had never been running. She had been controlling the game from the very beginning.
