Chapter 8: The Ghost in the Ashes
The helicopter circled the abandoned rooftop for nearly ten minutes.
When the tactical team finally landed, they found nothing.
"No footprints."
"No DNA."
"No surveillance footage."
One of the agents frowned.
"She was here. I know she was."
The commander picked up a small silver coin lying near the edge of the roof. On one side was a phoenix rising from flames.
On the other were two words.
TOO LATE.
His jaw tightened.
"She knew we were coming."
---
Miles away, Isabelle drove through the quiet streets in an old sedan that no intelligence agency had ever connected to her. Her appearance had changed once again—short black hair, dark contact lenses, and a pair of round glasses.
Another identity.
Another invisible life.
Her phone buzzed.
"Status?" she asked.
"The Council has activated Project Lazarus."
For the first time, Isabelle's grip on the steering wheel tightened.
"So... they've become desperate."
"We intercepted fragments of their plan."
"Send them."
Within seconds, encrypted files appeared on her dashboard display.
She scanned them quickly.
Target: Adrian Cross.
Objective: Capture alive.
Purpose: Use as bait.
Her eyes narrowed.
"I knew they'd come for him."
---
Adrian sat alone in his apartment, staring at the photograph of the little girl.
She died twenty years ago.
Those words refused to leave his mind.
He opened every database he had access to.
Hospital records.
Police archives.
Fire department reports.
Finally, he found it.
Twenty years earlier, a mansion had burned to the ground.
The official report stated that everyone inside had died.
Among the victims was an eight-year-old girl.
Name: Isabelle Laurent.
Adrian leaned back in disbelief.
"If she died..."
"...then who have I been chasing?"
Suddenly, every file on his computer vanished.
One by one, the pages turned blank.
A message appeared across the screen.
Some graves should never be opened.
His apartment lights flickered.
Then everything went dark.
---
Across the city, members of the Council watched through hidden cameras.
"He's getting too close."
"Proceed with Phase Two."
Masked operatives moved into position around Adrian's building.
They believed he was alone.
They were wrong.
From the rooftop of the building opposite, Isabelle watched every operative through a sniper scope.
She wasn't there to eliminate anyone.
She was there to make sure Adrian survived.
One by one, she activated tiny electronic devices hidden around the street.
Traffic lights failed.
Street lamps exploded into darkness.
Car alarms screamed.
Confusion spread instantly.
The operatives froze.
"What just happened?"
Before anyone could react, Isabelle slipped into Adrian's building unnoticed.
She knocked once.
Three short taps.
Two long taps.
Adrian opened the door cautiously.
His eyes widened.
"Isabelle?"
She stepped inside and quietly locked the door behind her.
"This is the first and last time I'm coming to you."
He stared at her.
"Who are you?"
She looked at the photograph still lying on his desk.
Then she answered with complete honesty.
"I am the girl the world buried twenty years ago."
Before Adrian could ask another question, a deafening explosion shook the entire building.
The windows shattered.
The lights went out.
Outside, armed operatives flooded the streets.
Isabelle looked toward the smoke-filled window, her expression calm.
"They're here."
She reached into her jacket and handed Adrian a small black key.
"If anything happens to me, don't let anyone else find what this unlocks."
"What is it?"
She met his eyes.
"The truth."
A heavy impact echoed from the apartment door.
Someone was trying to break in.
Another blow.
The hinges began to crack.
Isabelle slowly stepped in front of Adrian.
For the first time, she wasn't hiding.
She was ready to fight.
