Chapter 9: The Woman Who Refused to Die
The apartment door burst open with a deafening crash.
Six armed operatives flooded into the room, weapons raised.
"Don't move!"
Adrian instinctively stepped forward, but Isabelle gently pushed him behind her.
"Stay back."
The operatives froze.
Their mission files had described Isabelle as dangerous, but none of them expected the calm woman standing before them.
Their commander spoke first.
"Isabelle Laurent."
She remained silent.
"You've been running for twenty years."
A faint smile touched her lips.
"No."
"I've been waiting."
Without warning, the lights went out.
The apartment plunged into darkness.
Shouts erupted.
"Night vision!"
"Watch the windows!"
Before anyone could react, the sound of breaking glass echoed through the room.
One operative collapsed.
Then another.
No gunshots.
No screams.
Only silence.
The darkness itself seemed to be fighting.
Within seconds, the emergency lights flickered back on.
The apartment was empty.
Every operative lay unconscious on the floor.
Adrian and Isabelle were gone.
---
Three blocks away, they emerged from a forgotten service tunnel beneath the city.
Adrian struggled to catch his breath.
"How did you know that tunnel was there?"
"I designed it."
He stopped walking.
"You... designed it?"
She nodded.
"Long before anyone started looking for me."
The more Adrian learned, the less anything made sense.
"You keep talking like you've planned everything."
"I have."
"For twenty years?"
She looked ahead without slowing.
"For much longer than that."
---
Inside the Council's underground headquarters, fury erupted.
"They escaped!"
"Again?"
The Council Chairman slammed his fist onto the table.
"Enough."
He turned toward a sealed steel vault.
"Activate Protocol Zero."
Several members exchanged uneasy glances.
"Sir... once Protocol Zero begins, there's no turning back."
"I know."
A retinal scan unlocked the vault.
Inside rested a single black file.
Across its cover were three words.
ERASE HER COMPLETELY.
---
Meanwhile, Isabelle and Adrian reached an abandoned train station hidden beneath the city.
Dust covered the tracks, and the air smelled of rust and age.
In the center of the station stood an old steel locker.
Isabelle inserted the small black key she had given Adrian.
The lock clicked.
Inside was only one object.
A worn leather journal.
Adrian opened it carefully.
The first page contained a handwritten sentence.
«If you're reading this, they have already begun rewriting history.»
He looked at Isabelle.
"Who wrote this?"
She answered quietly.
"My father."
Before Adrian could speak again, he turned the page.
Every photograph had been cut out.
Every name had been covered with black ink.
Only one sentence remained untouched.
«The greatest lie ever told wasn't that Isabelle died. It was that she was ever ordinary.»
Adrian slowly raised his eyes.
"What are you?"
For the first time since they met, Isabelle hesitated.
Then she answered.
"I'm the reason Project: Never Existed was created."
A distant rumble echoed through the station.
The walls trembled.
Isabelle's expression changed instantly.
"They found us."
The ceiling shook as explosions thundered above them.
Dust rained down.
Adrian clutched the journal.
"They're collapsing the tunnels!"
Isabelle looked toward the only remaining exit.
"There isn't much time."
She drew a small device from her pocket and pressed a single button.
Somewhere deep beneath the city, an ancient mechanism awakened.
Massive steel doors began sliding open with a thunderous roar.
Behind them lay a hidden passage that had remained sealed for twenty years.
Isabelle took one step toward the darkness.
"It's time you learned why the world was never supposed to know I existed."
Together, they disappeared into the passage just as the tunnel behind them collapsed in a cloud of stone and dust.
