Chapter Four

926 Words
Natalie allowed her eyes to run through the result till it got to where the outcome of the test was stated positive. She froze for a while as her hands began shaking vigorously and tears began to wail up in her eyes as she already knew what the pregnancy test result would be. Natalie squeezed the envelope tightly between her fingers, trying hard to fight back the tears from rolling down her cheeks, exerting more pressure on the test result as each second passed by till the paper ripped apart. “Natalie” Katherine called out tenderly, switching from being a professional to being a friend. She has been a friend and a gynecologist to Natalie over five years of her being married, she knows better the issues that Natalie has been battling with, starting from her not being able to conceive down to the sleepless night her mother-in-law had made her had. “I have told you not to ponder much about this, this anxiety and stress you keep having over your fertility issue is one of the reasons why you keep on being diagnosed with IBS” Katherine went on to point out carefully and paused for a while to stare at Natalie who was sobbing quietly with her head bent over her laps. “I totally understand your pain,” Katherine started off again, “But that doesn't give you enough Validation to put your health at risk.” “You know what? We have got to…” Katherine’s voice faded into a distance as Natalie still had her focus poured on the test result that by now had patches of her salty tears all over it, her mind suddenly yanked back down memory lane to what happened that morning. Her mother-in-law, Louisa’s piercing and heartbreaking words that she had rained on her at the early hours of the day, reminding her of her barren condition and scolding her for complaining about health symptoms and using it as an opportunity to remain idle instead of seeking medical attention echoing in her head. As the memory replayed itself in her mind, heightening the ache she felt in her chest, she was completely drowned by her thought and drifted out of her environment till she felt a hand gently resting on her shoulder, “Everything will be fine one day” She heard Katherine’s voice. When Natalie finished with Katherine and headed over to the pharmacy to get the prescribed drugs, She stood in front of the hospital building taking in deep fresh breath to relieve herself of the distinct hospital smell. As the test result slowly crept back to her mind, Natalie pulled out her phone to reach out to Aria, her best friend and tell her of the recent happening. Unfortunately Aria wasn't picking up her call so she shoved the phone back into her handbag and waited for her driver to come pick her up. *** The drive home was a thought filled one for Natalie as she was lost in her own world once more, concentrating on her predicament till the car halted in front of the house, bringing her back to reality. “Thank you Usman” Natalie whispered as she got out of the car, waving at him before he drove off. She stood in front of the mansion's huge golden door, her eyes tightly shut as she tried gathering momentum to tell her mother-in-law and her nonchalant husband that the story is the same as ever. After a while of gathering the energy that she needs, Natalie dragged her feet tiredly on the floor, as she made her way into the house. The aesthetically pleasing, well arranged and chilled living room was quiet as usual because no one except the maids and her and sometimes Louisa were the only ones that were usually around at this time of the day. “Past 5pm” She sighed, peering into her golden wristwatch that braced her left hand, “What a hectic day it has been” Natalie added. As she walked further into the living room, heading for the stairs that was at the far end of the vertical spacious living room, Natalie caught sight of a female bag laying on of the soft leather cushion. “Isn't this Aria’s bag?” She asked, creasing her brows quizzically. “I thought as much, it is hers” Natalie continued when she got closer to the bag, “Then where is she?” She asked scanning the length of the living for a sight of her. “Aria” Natalie called out as she continued her journey toward the stairs, walking pass the cushion. “Where could she be?” She whispered to herself as she alighted the stairs, holding the handrails for support. When She got to the second floor of the house, taking the passageway on her left that was leading to her room, Natalie started hearing some inaudible noises that sounded like a lady giggling and letting out a series of moans in between the giggles. “Aria” Natalie whispered again, trying to strain her ears to hear what exactly it was. The moaning sound pitched with traces of excitement and laughter grew louder and Natalie walked further into the passage, and it became more clear that it was coming from her room. With tears filled eyes, Natalie shrugged off the burdensome thought of her mind, “it is a new day.” She reminded herself as the cab halted in front of her house gate.
