Chapter Three

1083 Words
As the warm days from the early morning sun poured into the scattered room of the hotel that had clothes laying around helplessly on the floor through the window, Natalie yawned loudly, stretching herself to a full length on the bed as she pushed her eyes apart. Getting startled as her legs felt something on the bed, quickly sitting upright “What?!” She shouted, cupping her mouth with her hand in shock as she saw a strange man, stark naked on the bed. She shone her eyes in surprise as the event from the night before played out in her mind, “What have I done?” Natalie slowly said, with her hand still on her mind, thinking about how her carelessness had pushed her into the arms of another man, something that she has never done, not even before she met her husband. “I told you it was all a bad idea,” She spoke to herself like she was talking to a different body than hers, “I told you the whole club thing was a bad idea” She repeated, hitting herself as tears trickled down her face at the mishap she had caused. Knowing fully well that the situation would be more devastating and awkward if the strange man wakes up to see her in her normal self, Natalie slowly got out of the bed and tiptoed to where her things were scattered on the floor. She quickly put on her clothes, tied her messy hair into a buns and began rummaging through her purse to get a pen, when she got one she quickly stood up and went to the table that was resting on the wall just before to get a bed. Not finding any paper she can scribble on, Natalie tore apart an empty crackers pack and scribbled a short sentence, apologizing about last night then a dropped a wad of cash on the table using it to support her written note. She took one last look at the man that was still sound asleep, snoring loudly before dashing out of the room, into the hotel lobby and finally into the street of California that was already bustling with life at such early hour of the day. Flagging down a yellow cab, she jumped on the back seat and allowed her busy mind take her back to the event of the previous day as her the cab drove off. *** In the crowded hallway of a hospital that had warm amber lights casting glows on the faces of the people scattered around and the well polished doors that led to different departments, chatter from waiting patients, cries of babies that were being injected in some wards or probably in pain and the footsteps of some medical staff whose heels of shoes clicked loudly as it came in contact with the tiled floor filled the air. In the midst of the rowdy environment in the hallway, a poised lady comfortably sat on one of the rows of a metallic chair that lined the walls of the hallway, in front of an office that had the badge “Gynecologist” on the door. Although her sitting posture was a flawless, perfect one, her trembling hand did not fail in betraying the confident look she was trying to show off despite the disturbing issues that laced her mind. The harsh smell of disinfectant, tinged with antiseptic and others cleaning agents that were endlessly used in mopping the floors till they spark and wiping surface areas along with the smell of medical equipment lingered heavily in the air like a thick cloud of rain, tickled her nose, making her sneeze uncontrollable. She tucked her hand into the leather handbag that was resting on her lap and brought out a white napkin to wipe of the traces of saliva that had splashed on her face as she sneezed hard and the snort it also dragged out from her nose. As she was wiping her face clean from the mess the series of sneezing had caused, a slim average height lady with blonde hair and a black scrub that had a red and blue pen sticking out from the pocket on the left hand side of her chest came out of the gynecologist office. “Natalie Salvator?” The lady who was presumably a nurse called out, her eyes darting around the busy hallway. “That is me” The poise lady said, raising her left hand up tentatively as she tried pushing the napkin back into her bag before getting on her feet. “The gynecologist is ready for you” The Nurse announced, allowing her eyes to fall on her for a while before walking away into the rowdiness of the hallway. “Oh lord, please help me” Natalie muttered a short prayer before going into the gynecologist office. “Hello Doctor” Natalie said, flashing a warm smile as she got back into the office. “Come quick, have your seat” Katherine Lowe, the female gynecologist on duty replied, flipping through a series of files spread on her desk, “The results are out” She went further to say. The sound of that sent a cold shiver down Natalie’s spine, making her heart race. “I hope there is positive news to that effect?” Natalie asked, trying so much but in vain to steady her voice. “Natalie” Katherine called out softly, raising her head up from what she was doing for the first time since Natalie walked into the office, “Have your seat” She repeated. Natalie reluctantly did as she was told and sat on an empty seat opposite Katherine, “Here they are” Katherine went on, stretching out two brown envelopes to her. “Thanks” Natalie replied as she took the envelope from her. One of the envelopes was tagged pregnancy test result while the other, diagnostic workup for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). When Natalie first spoke with Katherine earlier that day, she complained about a certain way she was feeling and Katherine sent her to the lab to run a pregnancy test and also a diagnostic workup for IBS because Natalie had been diagnosed several times in the past with that. Tearing open the envelope that had the IBS tag on, and pulling out the white printed paper that was carefully folded inside it, Natalie ran her eyes impatiently through the lines of the result.
