Chapter 1: No More Love
A sharp slap echoed through the room. "In this city, there is nothing your father cannot obtain. If you continue with him, I will break your legs," Mr. Wang thundered. With that, he struck his eldest daughter, Wang Sisi, across the face. The force of the blow was so heavy that she collapsed to the ground, clutching her cheek in pain. Lying on the floor, she sobbed bitterly, pleading, "Dad, our family has everything, can't we just accept him? I want to be with him... please, I beg you…" Mr. Wang barked, "No! Li, keep an eye on her. Don't let her leave this room." Li, the housekeeper, nodded, "Yes, sir." In anger, Mr. Wang stormed out of the room, leaving his daughter still crying. Li, standing by the door, sighed heavily as she listened to the sound of Wang Sisi's heart-wrenching sobs. After a while, she heard a soft knocking. Knock knock... knock knock... knock knock... "Let me out, please, let me out! Dad... please, let me out! I have to find him... please, let me go!" Wang Sisi cried, desperation in her voice. Though Mr. Wang had left, it was Li who heard these pleas. Listening to the cries, she couldn't help but feel a pang of concern. Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard Wang Sisi vomiting inside the room—a sound that tore at her heart. The housekeeper opened the door gently, her face full of concern. "Miss, please, listen to your father. He is your parent, he would never harm you." Wang Sisi, barely able to sit up, whispered weakly, "I can obey everything, but not in matters of marriage. That, I must decide for myself." With that, she fainted. Li, frightened, rushed to the door and cried out, "Master! Master! It's bad—Miss Sisi has fainted!" Mr. Wang replied coldly, "Let her sleep it off. She won’t die from it. Just keep her in that room." "Yes, sir. I’ll help her to bed," Li responded, before carefully laying Wang Sisi down on the bed. She wiped the tears from her face with a soft towel and tucked her in warmly. With a heavy heart, Li muttered to herself, "Such a kind-hearted young lady, tortured in this way. She never had to live like we did—struggling through poverty. If she had known hardship, maybe she wouldn't be so intent on marrying that poor boy." Sighing deeply, Li shook her head, closing the door behind her and locking it securely. "I’ll prepare something for Miss to eat. She can't go on like this. Her health can't withstand much more of this torment," Li murmured as she headed to the kitchen. Meanwhile, by the sea, a poor young man gazed at the vast expanse of the ocean, lost in memories of the past. He recalled the times he and Wang Sisi had walked along this beach, laughing, carefree. His battered body reflected the pain he carried, but in his eyes, there was still a glimmer of the happy days they once shared. He could almost hear her voice, shouting to the sea, "Wu Cheng, I swear I’ll marry you!" He laughed softly, his heart aching with love and regret. Just then, Mr. Wang arrived at the beach, accompanied by several men in black. "Poor fool, don’t think you can marry into our family. Today, you either die or I do. If you continue to pursue my daughter, I’ll destroy you," Mr. Wang threatened. The men in black, armed with rods, advanced on Wu Cheng and began to beat him mercilessly. He made no attempt to defend himself, taking the blows with silent endurance. They stopped only when it seemed he might not survive. One of the men spoke, "Boss, he looks like he’s about to pass out. If we keep going, he might die." Mr. Wang sneered, "Stop! Even if he dies, I have the money to make it disappear. I don’t want his life—just his leg." With that, he stomped on Wu Cheng’s left leg with all his might, snapping the bone. Wu Cheng cried out in agony. "Let’s see how you continue to chase after my daughter now," Mr. Wang mocked. "You’d be better off dying in the sea. A cripple like you is not worthy of her." "Just so you know," he added with cold finality, "Sisi has agreed to marry into the Zheng family. They are wealthy and powerful, capable of giving her happiness. You, on the other hand, have nothing. If you truly love her, you’ll let her go and allow her to find happiness." Lying on the ground, Wu Cheng endured the searing pain of his broken leg, tears flowing silently down his face. His mind raced with conflicting thoughts. “Let go of love. For our happiness, we must part. You once said you would marry no one but me, but now you’ve agreed to marry the Zheng family. What happened to your vows?” When Mr. Wang and his men left, Wu Cheng lay there, his heart shattered. It was a bitter victory for Mr. Wang, who had crushed the man he hated the most—knowing that Wu Cheng would never pursue his daughter again. On the beach, Wu Cheng’s pain seemed unbearable. He was too weak to move, letting the waves wash over him, his body and soul broken. His eyes closed in silent agony. At that moment, a couple appeared on the beach. The woman remarked, "Look, there's someone lying there." Her companion said, "Should we check on him?" As they approached, they saw Wu Cheng’s battered body and his broken leg. The woman gasped, "He’s covered in bruises, like he’s been beaten. Should we call the police?" Wu Cheng, hearing the word "police," mustered all his strength to plead, "Please, don’t call the police. I did this to myself. Please... don’t..." The woman hesitated, then said, "But your leg is broken. We should take you to the hospital." Wu Cheng, his voice barely a whisper, responded, "Yes... I want to go to the hospital." Without another word, the couple called for an ambulance, and within minutes, Wu Cheng was on his way to the hospital. Meanwhile, back at the mansion, Wang Sisi was still confined to her room, unable to leave. Every day, Li brought her meals and left them on the table. But Wang Sisi had no appetite. Her thoughts were with Wu Cheng. She would bang on the door and call out, "Let me out! Let me out! Please, Dad, let me see Wu Cheng... please..." One day, Mr. Wang arrived at her room with his men. He pushed the door open and scolded her, "Sisi, you're too young to understand the hardships of life. Look at what you've done to yourself. That poor boy, Wu Cheng, has drowned himself by the sea. Here’s the death certificate from the hospital. Take a look for yourself." Wang Sisi’s eyes widened in disbelief. "What? Wu Cheng is dead? How is that possible?" She snatched the death certificate from him, and there it was in black and white—Wu Cheng had drowned.
