The Funeral and the Woman in Red
The rain had been falling since dawn. Not a soft, gentle drizzle — a heavy, relentless downpour that turned the cemetery paths into streams of mud. Elena Carter stood stiffly beneath a black umbrella, her breath fogging in the cold air. Her fingers were clenched so tightly around the handle that they had gone numb. It was over. The mahogany coffin, polished until it shone even under the gray sky, now rested in the open grave. White lilies were scattered over its surface, the petals already bruised and wilting from the rain. The pastor’s voice was low, almost swallowed by the roar of the storm, but Elena didn’t need to hear the words to know what they meant. Her mother was gone. Her last family photograph would now forever be incomplete. Beside her, her father — Richard Carter — stood in a tailored black suit, his broad shoulders hunched, his face carved from grief. He was a man known for his control, his strength in business and in life. But today he looked… breakable. He hadn’t spoken much since the hospital call. When he did speak, it was brief, as though even forming words cost him effort. The pastor closed his Bible. People murmured soft condolences before hurrying to their cars. Soon, it was just the two of them standing by the grave, the sound of rain hitting the coffin’s lid. Richard’s voice was rough when he finally spoke. “I don’t know what I’ll do without her.” Elena’s chest tightened. She wanted to tell him she’d take care of him, that they’d figure it out together. But the words stuck somewhere in her throat. Instead, she placed a hand on his arm, the fabric of his suit cold and damp under her touch. “Dad,” she said softly, “we’ll get through this.” He gave the smallest nod, but his eyes didn’t move from the grave. The house felt emptier than she remembered. Not because the furniture had changed — it hadn’t — but because her mother’s presence was gone. The faint scent of her perfume, the sound of her humming in the kitchen, the way she always left a throw blanket folded perfectly over the sofa arm. Now the silence was so heavy it felt like another person in the room. Elena spent the next two weeks in a strange routine — making tea she rarely drank, checking on her father even when he was only in the next room, pretending not to notice how little he ate. It was on one of those afternoons, when she was returning from the grocery store, that she found her father in the kitchen with someone new. She stopped in the doorway. The woman was striking. Auburn hair that caught the light like fire, red lipstick against pale skin, a fitted cream dress that seemed expensive without trying. Her laugh was warm, effortless, the kind of laugh that made people lean in closer just to hear it again. “Elena,” her father said, straightening in his chair, “this is Marissa Hayes. She’s… been kind enough to bring us dinner.” Marissa turned, her smile instant and perfect. “It’s so lovely to meet you, dear. Your father’s told me so much about you.” Elena forced a polite smile, though something about the woman’s eyes — sharp, calculating behind the charm — put her on edge. “Nice to meet you too.” There was another presence in the kitchen, leaning against the counter, arms crossed. A girl about Elena’s age, with glossy brown hair and a flawless complexion, wearing a smirk instead of a smile. “This is Sophie,” Marissa said. “My daughter.” Sophie’s gaze flicked over Elena like she was inspecting an old car she didn’t think was worth buying. “Hi.” The word was flat, uninterested. Elena murmured a greeting back. Over the next few weeks, Marissa began appearing more and more. She brought food, made conversation that drew small smiles from Richard, and even managed to get him to watch an old black-and-white movie in the living room. Elena didn’t trust her. But she couldn’t deny the change in her father. For the first time since the funeral, he seemed lighter, less… haunted. One evening, Elena found herself alone in the kitchen with Marissa as they packed up leftovers. “You’re good for him,” Elena admitted quietly, though the words felt strange in her mouth. Marissa’s lips curved just slightly, her eyes glinting. “I only want what’s best for Richard. And for this family.” It sounded sincere. Almost. The engagement came quickly — too quickly. Richard called Elena into the dining room one evening, his face alight in a way she hadn’t seen in years. “I’ve asked Marissa to marry me,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “And she’s said yes.” Elena felt a jolt — not anger exactly, but a wary unease. She wanted to protest, to ask him why so soon, but the look on his face stopped her. “Dad… if she makes you happy…” She forced a smile. “Then I’m happy for you.” Later that night, as she walked past the study, she heard Marissa’s voice. Low. Urgent. On the phone. “Yes… she’s still here,” Marissa said, her tone different now — colder. “But not for long. Everything’s falling into place. Don’t worry. She won’t stand in our way.” Elena froze, her hand tightening on the doorframe. She won’t stand in our way. The “she” was her. Marissa laughed softly, a sound that no longer carried any warmth at all. Elena backed away from the door, her heart pounding. She didn’t know what Marissa was planning… but she knew one thing. Her father’s happiness might have just come at the cost of her own safety.
