The Night It All Changed
Amelia's pov.
Every day has been a day of regret, but it has always been my bedrock, even though it isn't worth it.
The packed house was full of light, music, and laughter.
Everyone was dressed in fine clothes, they were all dancing and smiling. But I wasn't part of that world.
I stood in the shadows, holding a tray of drinks. My legs were tired, and my back hurt from the beatings I got in the morning, but I kept working.
I didn't complain. I never did. I didn't even expect anything to be different that night.
Then I felt it.
Someone was watching me. I slowly looked up.
It was Alpha Dalton.
His eyes were fixed on me like I was the only one in the room. My heart jumped in my chest. I quickly looked down, thinking it was a mistake.
Alpha's never looked at girls like me. I was just a servant. I was nobody. But he didn't stop watching. And then he did something no one has ever done before.
He asked for me.
“Let her serve me,” he told the head maid.
Everyone stared. The other girls looked at me with hate in their eyes. I didn't understand what was happening. Why me?
I walked to the table, my hands shaking as I poured him wine.
“What a beautiful damsel. What's your name?” He asked, his voice deep and calm.
“A–Amelia,” I whispered.
He smiled at me. A real smile. My heart raced. No one had ever smiled at me like that.
He didn't just want a drink. He wanted to talk. He asked me where I was from, how long I'd worked there, and If I was happy with my Job.
Happy?
No one had ever asked me that before.
I lied and said yes.
For the rest of the night, he only spoke to me. I felt like I mattered. Like I wasn't just a girl in rags. Like maybe just maybe, my life would be different.
Three days later he called me to his office.
When I arrived, he was waiting with a serious face.
“I want you to be my Luna. I believe you're the right person in that position,” he said.
I blinked. “What?”.
My lips trembled. “But I'm just a servant; is there anything special you see in me?”.
“Not to me, you're a different person entirely. I saw some potential in you. That's why I am here,” he said.
His words were heavy making me silent. I didn't know what to say. It felt like a dream. One I didn't want to wake up from.
So I said yes.
And for a while, I was happy.
He treated me kindly. They gave me nice clothes, a room of my own, and respect. The pack started to look at me differently. I wasn’t just a servant anymore. I was their Luna.
I fell in love with him. Slowly. Deeply. I would do anything for him.
But things started to change.
It didn’t happen all at once. It was little things at first.
He stopped smiling at me.
He stopped asking if I was okay.
He stopped coming to our room.
And worst of all… he stopped touching me.
I tried everything. I cooked his favorite meals. I wore the dresses he liked. I waited up for him, even when he came home late from pack meetings.
But he was always tired. Always busy. Always cold.
Two years passed, and I was still childless.
And he hated that.
He never said it out loud, but I saw it in his eyes.
Other she-wolves had babies. Strong pups with golden eyes and thick fur. But I had nothing. My womb was empty, and so was our bed.
I cried in silence every night.
He didn't notice.
Until last night.
I was lying beside him, pretending to be asleep. That's when I whispered her name.
Not mine.
“Gina…..”
My heart stopped.
I opened my eyes and stared at him.
Who was Gina?
Why did he say her name in his sleep?
I lay there frozen, wondering If I had always been a shadow in his heart. If Gina was the light he wanted.
The next morning, I cooked breakfast, but he didn't even say thank you.
“Alpha,” I said softly, “Can we talk?”.
“Not now, Amelia. You can see I'm busy,” He replied, not even looking at me.
I swallowed my pain and nodded.
Later that day, I saw him talking to Beta Marco outside. I hid behind the wall and listened.
“How long has she been back?” Alpha Dalton said.
“She returned three days ago,” Marco replied. “She's asking about you”.
My heart sank.
Was it her?
Was Gina back?
Was that why he was cold?
I tried to tell myself it was nothing. Maybe Gina was just an old friend.
But that night, he didn't come home.
I waited for him until the moon was high in the sky.
Still, there was no sign of him.
The next day, I asked the guards if they'd seen him.
“He left early this morning. Said not to be disturbed,” One of them said.
I walked back to our room with a heavy heart.
Was he with her?
My chest hurt so badly, I thought I couldn't breathe.
I looked at myself in the mirror. My eyes were tired. My skin is pale. My lips dry.
“Maybe I’m not enough,” I whispered.
I thought being Luna would make me happy.
But now, I feel lonelier than ever.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
I walked outside, barefoot, letting the cold wind touch my face.
Suddenly, I saw two figures near the woods.
I hid behind a tree and watched.
It was him.
And a woman.
She was a beautiful tall woman with long black hair. He held her hand and leaned in close.
“Gina,” he softly said. “You came back”.
She smiled. “I had no choice because I want to see you”.
My heart shattered.
She was back.
And he still loved her.
I ran back to the house, tears falling from my eyes.
Why didn't he tell me?
Why did he marry me if he still wanted someone else?
