CHAPTER 30 I didn’t take the pills, I didn’t have dinner and I didn’t go to bed that night; instead I sat in the chair and watched as the evening sun cast its dying rays across the garden, eventually turning the sky crimson as it sank below the horizon. My window was the old-fashioned sash type but barred in case an inmate was tempted to throw themselves out; out from the four storey height to mash their brain and shatter their bones on the flagstones below as a silent indictment of the hospital’s efficacy. It had been a warm, humid day so I’d pushed the lower frame up and the upper frame down a fraction to let in what air I could. As the day drew to a close the temperature had dropped and a gentle breeze sneaked into the room, caressing my bare arms as gently as a stroke from a feather
