Kyle and Max shifted on their feet as they stood in front of Celine's parent's home. Both men had insisted on dressing up for the occasion despite Celine's brush-off that her parents weren't expecting anything of the sort.
"Man, this is more nerve-racking than trying to shift," murmured Max to Kyle as he wiggled his tie into place for the hundredth time.
Kyle nodded, he too was nervous about meeting Celine's family. Considering they had only begun seeing each other for a week.
Celine walked between them and smiled, "Relax guys, my mom and dad won't eat you. Besides aren't you two supposed to be the proverbial bad wolves?"
Kyle scowled at her, but she only grinned wider.
"Hey, we need to make a good impression on your folks," stated Max, "I don't want your mom thinking we are slums."
Celine laughed and kissed both men's cheeks before moving towards the front door, pulling them both along by the hands. She just stepped up to the door when it flung open and an older version of Celine stepped out shouting hello and engulfing her in a tight embrace.
"My baby girl, I'm so proud of you. You finally told that witch Morgan to shove it," the woman declared, with a bright sunny smile and dancing eyes. Then she turned her attention to Max and Kyle, who straightened into poles at her gaze.
"You two must be the ones who saved my baby from that wretched place," stated the older woman, "My name is Patricia. Thank you so much for giving my daughter this job. She needed to get away from that awful company."
Kyle extended his hand, "Pleased to meet you, ma'am, I'm Kyle Moore and this is my partner Max Harper." he said.
"Mom, where is dad?" Celine asked as her mother ushered them into the house.
"He went to pick up groceries, I'm making supper tonight for everyone," Patricia announced, "He'll be back shortly."
Celine nodded as they followed her mother to the living room.
"So, I hear Logan came back home yesterday. You remember Logan right Celine?" inquired Patricia with a soft smile, "He was the little boy you grew up playing with until you two went your own ways. I invited him over for dinner along with his family."
Celine tensed at the mention of Logan, she hadn't heard from him in years. Not since middle school after they had gone their separate ways. She had never told her mother the real reason behind her and Logan's separation that day.
Logan had started to become an jerk, he and his friends had cornered her one day and tried to make advances on her. Kissing her lips or trying to paw at her body which she had blocked with her books. It had horrified her since at the time she hadn't been interested in boys at all.
Later that day she had confronted Logan about the situation and he had just shrugged it off saying he thought she would have liked it. She slapped him and stalked away claiming their friendship was over.
Now she was going to have to face him once more as an adult. Her hands squeezed Kyle's as her mother prattled on about Logan's accomplishments.
Kyle leaned towards her and whispered, "What's wrong love?"
"I never thought my mom would invite the Marriot's to supper tonight," she whispered back, "I don't like Logan."
"It's okay love, we are here. You don't have to worry," reassured Kyle, "We won't leave you alone with the man."
Celine nodded and went back to chatting with her mother. She easily could have told her mother about Kyle and Max being hers but she wanted to tell both her parents at the same time rather than individually. In fact, she had been sure she told her mother that she wanted a small private family dinner.
The doorbell rang, which told Celine that her father was still out getting groceries as he would have just walked in the door demanding help from the foyer.
Her mother returned with the older Marriot couple and a younger man who took after his father visually. The moment they entered the living room her gaze locked onto Logan.
"Celine, you remember Mr. and Mrs. Mariott, Glen, and Charlotte?" her mother inquired with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes, hello. Long time no see," Celine said standing up to shake the couple's hand.
"Celine, you have grown into a fine young woman," stated Glen Marriot, "I always knew you would turn out well."
Celine just shrugged, "Age and time do that to you," she replied.
"Looking good Celine. Remember me? Your old buddy Logan?" said the young man behind the two. He stepped forward and opened his arms wide.
Celine just grasped his hand and shook it once before pulling it back. She gestured to the two men who had immediately stood behind her.
"This is Kyle and Max. My new boss and his right-hand man," she said, introducing the two men, "They came with me today to help me pack my stuff for my move to Wolf's Glen."
Max and Kyle just nodded their greeting. Her mother encouraged them to all take a seat. Kyle and Max returned to the couch placing Celine between them and making as much room as possible for Logan who had decided he wanted to sit there too.
Celine listened silently while her mother and the Marriot's gossiped about whatever they had found out that week.
She was all too aware of Logan's curious glances between her, Kyle, and Max.
"So, are you doing well?" Logan asked after a while, "I am now working for Lucky Diamond Drillers."
"She is doing fine," Max replied for Celine, "Kyle here just hired her to be his full time designer for the resort."
"I see," Logan drawled, "She must have gotten over her own selfishness to be banging the boss."
Celine's eyes flashed with anger, Logan's words were harsh.
