Call Me Back

P.O.V AMARA "The necessary." his voice sounded dryly "so I'll say it one more time, stay on your own territory, little snake" Before I had a chance to ask further a long shrill tone sounded. He had ended the call. +-+-+ My heart was still racing at a hundred per hour when I tried to dial the number again, but the irritating little voice said that the user was unavailable. Lost, I banged against the metal railing. "f**k" I practically screamed. "Amara?" My cell phone almost fell out of my hands as I jerked to look back. Aiden was looking confused at me with his hair wild. I forced an uncomfortable smile. How long had he been standing there, how much had he heard? "Is everything okay?" Aiden took a step closer, a simple white t-shirt hung loosely around his torso. I couldn't tell him what was really going on. He was going to tell Rosaline regardless and she wasn't allowed to find out about any of this at any cost. Whatever this might be. "Um, yeah sure I-" I noticed Aiden was staring at the cell phone in my hand and quickly tucked it away in my pocket. "I had lost a mini ga-" "Who were you talking to?" He interrupted my lie. Okay, so he had been standing here long enough to know I had called someone. His green eyes didn't lose sight of me. My throat felt dry as I smiled awkwardly. "No one in particular." Was all I could think of. He frowned as he came to stand beside me at the railing. "It didn't sound that way to me anyway, you seemed rather frustrated." I almost wanted to roll my eyes. Don't get me wrong Aiden was a good guy as far as I knew him, but right now I had no need for irritating questions. "Then you're wrong." I snarled. I had to get out of here before I betrayed myself. I turned abruptly and was already about to walk away from the blond-haired boy when I felt an iron grip on my upper arm. Rough fingers drilled into my skin and I gasped in pain. "You can be honest with me." Aiden's warm breath caressed my cheek, his cologne scented of pine cones invading my nostrils. Intensely I stared at his hand around my upper arm, with clenched teeth I took a deep breath. "You want me to be honest?" I asked with raised eyebrows. Aiden nodded slowly, the tension between us was cutting. I had a vile reply ready when something caught my eye, the tattoo of the snake on his forearm. I had noticed that too the first time we met. I didn't think anything of it then, but now? Who was I kidding Valdimir was in my head. "Well?" urged Aiden. I took a deep breath and pulled hard out of his grip. "Let it go, Aiden. There was nothing." I muttered wearily. Aiden's gaze softened as he ran a hand through his hair, as if embarrassed. I rubbed the sore spot on my arm. "Sorry, lately I've been kind of tense," Aiden sighed "Sometimes I get little outbursts like that." I nodded softly and avoided Aiden's gaze. Not because I didn't dare look at him but because I knew the feeling all too well. Like not being able to contain your own feelings. "What did you come to do on the balcony?" I asked now, more relaxed. Aiden leaned his back against the railing. The moonlight shining on his blonde hair seemed to give him a golden glow. In appearance, Aiden was the complete opposite of Vladimir. Aiden pulled a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from his pockets and waved it at me for a moment. "I know it's ruining my lungs, but I can't live without it." He took the lit cigarette between his fingers and took a big gulp. The smoke he exhaled flew into the night. "You want some?" As a teenager, I had smoked cigarettes with friends for fun, but never had I really smoked often. Doubly, I accepted the cigarette. A small grin painted Aiden's face. I put the cigarette to my lips and inhaled the smoke. A big coughing fit followed and Aiden laughed. "What are you laughing at?" I coughed. Aiden innocently shrugged and quickly took the cigarette back. His eyes continued to rest on me. "Why are you looking at me like that?" Aiden grinned and turned his gaze back to the starry sky. "You remind me of someone," He swallowed hard. "I used to know." I tilted my head slightly. If I knew one thing about Aiden, it was that he liked to talk in mysteries. My hair flew into my face through the gentle breeze. "I hope someone good?" Aiden smiled weakly as he extinguished the cigarette with the heel of his clean and pushed himself straight off the railing. With a sluggish hand, he removed the hair from my face. "I don't know what you consider good, Amara, but in my eyes she was more than good." His jaw stiffened a little "She was unforgettable." I blinked slowly and nodded. Whoever that person might be, Aiden missed her. My throat had gone dry and Aiden's greenish eyes were intense; I felt the tension between us grow and took a step toward the house. "I think it's about time we went back inside, Rosaline and Max are probably waiting for us." Almost disappointed, Aiden nodded. And with the blond-haired boy on my heels, we entered the cottage again, leaving the balustrade in silence. The only sound left were the crickets, singing their song. +-+-+ I stared aimlessly at the ceiling. Aiden had left less than an hour later because he had business to attend to and not much later Max, Rosaline and I decided to crawl into bed. I had been spinning around wildly and trying almost every lying position, but I just couldn't manage to fall asleep. The mysterious phone call haunted me. With lazy eyes, I looked at the alarm clock. It was already 3:21 AM. What I was about to do was perhaps one of my stupidest decisions ever but I did it anyway. I grabbed my cell phone from the nightstand and searched for Vladimir in my contacts. I didn't have to think long about the message I wanted to send and with a trembling thumb I pressed send. You: Tomorrow, 12 o'clock at the beach. We need to talk. Don't be late. Without waiting for an answer I put my cell phone away and let myself flop down on my pillow. It was time for me to take the initiative.
