Mom could not believe that her husband would stand up to her and defend me. It has never happened before. Dad never challenges her or even tries to correct her. He lets her get away with everything she does just to maintain the peace.
Even my brothers that always avoided her troubles stood up to defend me, and that made her shocked and annoyed. For a moment she just stood there, staring at all of us like she was looking at strangers. Her lips trembled, Her eyes filled with tears that I knew very well were fake. I had watched her use those same tears all my life whenever things didn’t go her way.
