chapter 1
At the dinner table, my younger brother Ade showed a bitter smile.
"Nancy, we have the best family in the world."
"Mom and Dad love us all the same, even I’m a boy."
"I’m a bit down because I think all the love in the family will be for you from now on."
My mom laughed and hit him.
My mother slapped him softly and smiled. "You're over 40, why compete with your sister? It's not promising."
"I'll give you all the love for the first, and she will get our love later. Don't be a jerk just because you're younger. We're going to follow your sister for the rest of our life."
My dad laughed too.
"She is biological, but I am not, right? I know you just love her more."
"Now your grandson has just been admitted to university, you cannot wait to go back home to find my sister."
Then he turned and told me.
"Nancy, Mom and Dad are getting older and their health situations are getting worse. I've asked a health expert for advice and they've recommended products. I'll share the link with you. "
"Dad's waist is not good. Make more soup and add more ingredients for him when you cook"
"If you don't have enough money, just ask me."
Ade incessantly instructed me.
My mother stopped him.
"Silly boy, how could she possibly have no money? She would not spend too much on her daughter, it’s just a girl."
"Nancy doesn't care about money, she doesn’t have to buy that kid a house but you have to buy you son one in the future. How can your sister ask you for money?"
She was speaking to me, not my brother.
She got my brother to agree.
My brother still wanted to reply.
My father also scolded him.
He sounded hateful.
"That’s enough. Don't consider working in a big city is a great thing, I know you just pretend to be rich."
My brother was too scared to speak.
My mother got up and carried the things down from the sofa.
"I told you, why did you still buy so many things for your sister?"
"Your son just got into college, and she forgot to give him any gifts."
After hearing all this, my sister-in-law, who was unhappy about the cost of the gifts, finally smiled.
They took the gifts to the door and was about to left.
"Don’t worry, Nancy has money, maybe your son may still need her financial support someday."
"Just take all the things back, it’s a waste of money and Nancy doesn’t need this."
My mother was angry because my daughter had opened a bottle of milk.
"Why is she so greedy?"
"How could they take those back if you opened it?"
"You're rude and ill-mannered!"
My daughter was pushed hard.
My daughter was looking at her iPad and didn’t expect her grandmother would push her that hard.
She fell off the sofa.
I ran over.
I was anaemic and malnourished when I was young. My health condition is not good and had trouble getting pregnant. I never got pregnant after I got married.
I finally have Charlie as my daughter at 30.
I was angry.
"Mom, why are you so angry about Charlie, it’s just a bottle of milk!"
"Why? Are you afraid that the supermarket won't refund the money?"
"I'll pay for this, alright! Why did you push her? "
My mom got angry when she heard me complaining.
"How dare you!I am your mother!"
"How could you treat your parents like this?"
"Your nephew got into college, and you didn't show any appreciation back then. Now you want your brother’s gift? These cost him over a thousand!"
Her voice got louder and sharper.
My daughter was scared and cried again.
"Look at your good daughter! She scolded me only because I pushed Charlie! What a noble girl! I’ve worked hard to raise you, and now you’re fighting with me! "
I didn’t know why my mother would say all these.
My husband came back then.
He bought alcohol from the supermarket and planned to drink with his father-in-law and brother-in-law tonight. He came to my daughter and me and asked what had happened. I didn't say anything, just patted Charlie's back. My mother couldn't help but see my angry expression.
She took Ade’s hand and complained.
"See! They don’t welcome us. Let’s leave right now."
Ade wanted to say something.
But when he saw my mom leaving, he didn’t have time to think.
He quickly got the car keys.
"Nancy, don’t blame Mom and Dad for that. They’ve just been thrifty and think these gifts are a waste of money."
"Don’t think too much about your nephew either!"
"I’ll take Mom and Dad to my place first."
