THE BARRIER
CHAPTER 1
THE BARRIER
“Hey! Watch it!.”
Aria ignored the yeller and wrapped my coat tighter around herself, half hoping that the coat could offer a sense of protection even though she knew she was just deceiving herself.
In the past month, Aria’s life changed drastically than she could have ever imagined. Everytime she and my friends watched Supernaturals or any movie on a genre that discusses them, she always prided herself as the voice of reason ready to set them straight and tell them that things like that don’t exist.
‘Things.’
She couldn’t possibly say that to their faces now, could she? But, she couldn’t call them Humans when they were not. Plus, it didn’t help that a couple of ‘them’ viewed themselves to be higher and better than humans.
Left to Aria, she would rather every specie continued living in their preferred spaces regardless of the so-called barrier being brought down.
Maybe it wasn’t so called any more, given that if ‘they’ could be real, then the barriers could also be.
“Hey bestie!.” An Arm slung over her shoulders suddenly causing her to jump in fright.
“You’re okay?” Brown concerned eyes stared at Aria with raised eyebrows.
“Yeah, Debbie. You scared me for a minute there.” Aria sighed.
“You know for someone who sure works on logic, you seemed awfully jumpy.” Piper remarked steering Aria directly into the school while giving a single hand wave at their other best friend, Sarah who was half-sitting on the bumper of a car in the school’s parking lot speaking with a couple of jocks.
Aria didn’t care, knowing Sarah would meet up with her and Piper and she was not about to be best buddies with a guy whom Sarah was going to change once school goes out on Friday.
“Hey cuties!”
Just as expected, Sarah came bouncing, putting her arm around Aria’s free shoulder grinning.
“Get your fat arms off me.” Aria grimaced, shaking her head.
“Fat? You wish.” Sarah scoffed, but still removed her arm nonetheless and Piper followed seconds after.
“I hear that we have a match soon with the guys at the Olive Garden.” Sarah grins waving a hand at a junior who blushed in response.
Unlike Mean girls and most cliché head cheerleader, Sarah was a full burst of sunshine, beautiful and full of spirit, but also ready to burn you if you came too close.
“I wonder who the heck gave a school that name.” Piper snorted.
“I know right, Sounds like a fancy Italian restaurant.” Sarah giggled.
“Maybe, it was a Don.” Piper replied.
“Now that sounds kinky, and I like it. Hey, Aria, what’s up? You’ve been quiet since. What’s logic and rational thinking telling you?” Sarah smiled, her baby blue eyes clashing with stormy blue ones.
“What about this past month been logical?!” Aria snapped forcing a breath out of her friends surprised looks.
Banging her head on her locker, Aria watched Piper from the corner of her eyes, open her own locker which was next to Sarah’s and pull out a book. Somehow, they had managed to always have their lockers side by side, but that was one secret they’d never tell anyone, except if Ms. Rivers spilled.
“I’m sorry I snapped.” Aria finally said raising her head from the locker.
“It’s fine. Regardless of how much we fantasized about them before did not mean that we really wanted them to be true.” Sarah shrugged joining Aria to lean on her locker.
“Plus, if it were by fantasizing, why hasn’t my crush liked me back?.” Piper pouts.
“Let’s see.” Sarah puts her hand under her chin pretending to think.
“Just stop. You’re going to fry the remaining brain cells that you have left.” Piper smirks.
“You have the nerve to…!” Sarah wiggles her index finger at Debbie.
“Anyway, the reason you don’t have a boyfriend would be because you are in the debate team. No-one like boring people and that you’re plain.” Sarah says to Piper with a sweet smile.
Aria watched their bickering with a smile on her lips. It felt like a normal Monday. They congregating around their lockers even though they met during the weekend, Sarah and Piper coming up with fresh insults for the other person and then going to their first class of the day together.
“Anyone hear about the news that the son of the Alpha King would be coming here with some of his other people?!” Sarah leaned in whispering.
“You should know that when they come whispering will be useless with their sensitive hearing and all.” Aria grimaced.
“True.” Piper shrugged.
“I wonder how hot their guys will be. The ones that I’ve seen are quite beefy.” Sarah said bouncing on her heels.
“I’ll tell you. The ones I saw on the TV got gunned down by an entire crew of SWAT group for treating humans like s**t and abusing female humans because according to him, ‘they deserved it.’” Piper said and Aria frowned.
“I did see it as well. To imagine that normal cops aren’t good for them and they had to pull out special forces for this just says that they are a threat. If they intend to keep to their animalistic nature, then they should also keep to the woods as their natural environment.” Aria squeezed her face in annoyance.
“God knows when they intend to sign the treaty. They had best get on that. It’s terrible that people are dying.” Piper sighed.
“Yeah, nope. Still let everyone return back to their habitat. It’s been a freaking month!.” Aria groaned, massaging her nose bridge.
“You know that’s not going to happen. There are tons of humans who are just as bad and they are craving what these people have, for example elixirs or even the tons of platinum gold they have.” Piper said.
“If they can be even called people.” Aria interrupted Piper exchanging a grin with Sarah whose eyes darts continually between Piper and Aria.
“Maybe not, but if the son of the Alpha King is coming, then that should say something, and it’s been two months Aria.” Piper says as the bell for class rings.
“What does it say?” Sarah butted in asking.
“That they are here to stay.” Aria’s tongue felt like lead as the words came out.
“Focus on Cheerleading Sarah. Seems like you were born blonde to tell people that you are dumb before they approach you.” Piper said.
“Hey!” Aria yelled.
“What?!” Piper yells back and then pauses as she looks at me before sprinting in the direction of class.
“I’m blonde too!.” I yell not even paying attention to the eyes my outburst attracted.
Sarah and I don’t even exchange glances before we chase her, hot on her heels.
It’s just like a regular Monday.
There’s nothing much a son of the Alpha King and his entourage can do.
