Chapter 1: The marriage ultimatum
I was sitting in front of my mirror, meticulously putting on my makeup. It was my 20th birthday, and my pack was hosting a party for me, I was their alpha's daughter. My Best friend Jade stormed into my room and gave me a bear hug just as I was ready to put on the exquisite red dress my parents had gifted me. "Kira! You look so beautiful!" Jade exclaimed, her typical sparkle lighting up her perfect blue eyes. With a broad smile that stretched across her face, she stepped back and assessed me, eliciting a reciprocal smile from me. I swear, had Jade been a guy, she sure would have been my mate, but she wasn't, unfortunately. "It's the ideal dress. You're going to be the belle of the ball tonight, and that crown! Oh, my god." My cheeks started to turn red. "Many thanks, Jade." I wasn't sure about the crown at first, but I've grown to love it. I turned back to the mirror, adjusting the glittering tiara just so. Jade plopped down on my bed, watching me intently. "I can't believe you're already 20. It feels like just yesterday we were running through the forest, getting into all sorts of mischief. You remember that time we spread cow waste everywhere in the palace?" She laughed, the echoing sound filling my room. I joined in her laughter, the memories flooding back. "Yeah, those were the good old days. Now look at us, practically grown women." I finished putting on the dress and turned to face her, my nerves starting to flutter. "I'm a little nervous, to be honest. There are going to be so many people downstairs, all eyes on me as usual, sigh." Jade stood and placed her left hand on my arm. "Don't be silly, Kira. You're going to be the star of the show. Everyone is going to be in awe of how beautiful and poised you are." She winked. "And I'll be right by your side, keeping you company as always, sisters, for life, right?" I nodded at that. Just then, a servant poked his head into the room after a few knocks. "Miss Kira, Miss Jade, the party has begun. Your parents request your presence downstairs." I took a deep breath, smoothing my hands over the silky fabric of my dress. "Well, here we go. Time to face the masses." I linked my arm with Jade's, and together we walked our way downstairs. As soon as we descended the grand staircase, all eyes turned to us. I could feel the weight of their gaze, but I knew I had to keep the confidence to hold my head high. I scanned the crowd, searching for my parents' familiar faces. When I finally spotted them, they were beaming with happiness, I think. Until their expressions suddenly shifted—or maybe it was just my imagination. My father stepped forward, clearing his throat. "Kira, my dear. Your mother and I have a very special birthday gift for you." He exchanged a loaded glance with my mother, who nodded solemnly. I smiled and nodded, waiting for them to give me whatever gift they had for me. "What is it, Father?" I asked, my brow furrowing with confusion. "Well, you see, my darling... It might not be the perfect gift, but..." he began, hesitating. "As you know, our pack has been under threat from a rival clan. To secure an alliance and ensure our protection, your mother and I have arranged for you to be married." I felt as if the ground had dropped out from under me, my heart plummeting into the pit of my stomach. Married? It was my birthday, my special day; how could they spring that on me now? I opened my mouth, wanting to protest, but no words came out. My mother came forward, placing her hand on my arm. "Kira, we know this is a lot to take in. But this marriage will ensure the safety of our pack. It's the only way, and you'd also be very happy." Her eyes pleaded with me to understand. I shook my head slowly, my mind racing. "No, I can't. This is my life and my future. How can you just decide this for me? What about my true mate? I've always waited for him!" Tears burned at the corners of my eyes, threatening to fall on my cheeks. "Kira, this is not up for discussion. The arrangement has been made, and you will comply." My father's facial expression hardened. His tone left no room for argument. I felt a hand slip into mine, and I turned to see Jade, her own eyes filled with concern. "Kira, I'm so sorry," she whispered. "I had no idea." I gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "I won't do it. I won't marry a stranger, not even for the sake of the pack. This is my life, and I should have a say in it." Turning back to my parents, I spoke, my voice quivering. My mother's brow furrowed, and she exchanged a glance with my father. "Kira, please try to understand. This is bigger than you or me. The safety of our entire pack is at stake. You must do this." "No!" I cried, my voice echoing through the stunned silence of the room. "I won't. I'd rather die than be forced into a marriage I don't want." The tears were flowing freely now, spilling down my flushed cheeks. I felt as if my very soul had been ripped from my body, leaving me hollow and adrift. I see why they said it was a gift—maybe because I was always obedient and did whatever they said. Sensing the tension in the room, my father turned to the gathered guests. "Everyone, please enjoy the rest of the evening. Kira and I need to have a private discussion." He gestured for me to follow him, and with one last look at Jade, I trailed after him, my feet feeling like lead. Once we were alone, my father fixed me with a stern gaze. "Kira, you need to understand the importance of this alliance. Our pack is on the verge of collapse. This marriage is the only way to secure our future." I shook my head forcefully. "But why me? Why must I be the one to sacrifice my happiness?" My voice trembled as I asked. "Because you are our daughter, our heir," my father replied, his tone softening slightly. "You have a responsibility to our pack and our people. This is not about your desires; it's about the survival of our entire way of life. As a princess and future Luna, or alpha of the pack, desires come after the happiness of the pack." I opened my mouth to speak, but my father raised a hand to silence me. "Kira, this is not up for debate. You will marry the alpha, and that is final. If you refuse, the consequences will be severe." His eyes narrowed at me. I was confused; I felt lost, as if the air had been sucked from my lungs. How could they do this to me on my birthday? I had dreamed of finding my true mate, of falling in love, and of building a life together. But now, all of that has been taken from me and replaced with a cold, calculated, stupid arrangement. "I can't do this, Father," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "I won't." "Then you leave me no choice." He turned and strode back towards the party, leaving me alone in the dimly lit room, my tears flowing freely. Jade found me a few moments later, her own eyes filled with unshed tears. "Kira, I'm so sorry. I had no idea." She pulled me into a tight embrace, and I clung to her. "I don't know what to do, Jade," I sobbed, my voice muffled against her shoulder. "I can't marry someone I don't love, but I can't bear the thought of what might happen if I refused." Jade held me at arm's length and gazed into my eyes. "Kira, you have to stand your ground. This is your life, and this is your future. You can't let your parents dictate it, no matter the consequences." I shook my head, but inside me, I knew I couldn't sacrifice my pack. " But Jade, you don't understand. They said the pack was in danger and that this marriage was the only way to secure our safety. I can't just ignore that, no matter how much I want to." Jade opened her mouth to reply, but a sudden commotion from the main hall cut her off. We exchanged a glance and hurried back towards the party, only to find my mother all wet, soaked with water, standing at the top of the stairs, a lit match in her trembling hand. "Kira," she called out, her voice strangled with emotion. "If you don't accept this arrangement, I will have no choice but to end my life. THE PACK NEEDS TH IS ALLIANCE. Please, for the sake of our people, you must do this." Just as she was about to light the match in her hand, a final tear fell off my eyes. ”I will do anything, Mom, anything!”
