7 Meet a Knight

“The forest is so pretty, don’t you think so?” Ailsa said to Walt but he didn’t reply. They were making their way north of the Land of Origin which was where the Elves Valley was located. They had been walking for hours and Walt was a little tired but Ailsa seemed to have an endless supply of energy which annoyed him a little. He figured it was because she was an elf and elves were stronger than Terrans. Terrans were basically humans and felt tired and hungry easily but elves hardly got tired, they drew strength from nature. So as long as she was around trees and creatures of the forest, she never felt tired. “Walt, I said-” “I heard you,” he interrupted her, causing her to stop and frown at him. “What’s your problem?” she asked. He turned to face her and sighed. “I don’t have a problem,” he said. “Sure you do, you’ve been grumpy since we left the village and I don’t know why.” “Well maybe it’s cause I’m hungry and tired and you won’t stop talking,” he suddenly snapped at her, causing her to recoil and he immediately regretted what he said. He was about to apologize when they suddenly heard a woman scream. They both ran in the direction of the scream and saw a blonde woman clad in a knight’s outfit fighting a large pack of wolves. She did not seem to be fighting them directly and was actually using her shield to guard herself against them. The lady slashed at them sometimes but quickly used a protection skill when the wolves got too close. “Let’s help her,” Ailsa said and started to run towards the lady when Walt pulled her back. “No, it’s too dangerous. I’ll help her, you stay here,” he said. She shook free from him and glared at him. “Aren’t you tired? You probably can’t help anyone. Why don’t you stay here and I’ll help her,” she said and left him before he could say anything. Walt mentally kicked himself for saying all those things he said and ran after her. “Need some help?” Ailsa said to the lady who was still using a shield skill. “Yes, please!” she said when she saw Walt and Ailsa. Her protection spell broke off in that moment and the wolves growled and pounced. Walt quickly jumped in front of the women, he unsheathed his sword and slashed it at one of the wolves that got too close. His sword cut the wolf on it muzzle, causing it to whimper. Another one growled at him and charged towards him. Walt carefully maneuvered away from the direct attack and slid on the ground and the wolf jumped. Then he thrust his sword through the belly of the beast, impaling it. Ailsa ran towards one of the wolves with her daggers and jumped then did a quick air flip. She landed on the wolf’s back and plunged her daggers into its neck. The wolf howled then fell dead to the ground. She laughed at her victory and looked up to see that Walt had killed the rest of the wolves. He smiled sheepishly at her but she only glared at him. “Thank you, oh thank you so much,” the lady said. “You’re welcome,” Walt said a little too gallantly causing Ailsa to roll her eyes. “I’m Ailsa, he’s Walt. What’s your name?” “Jenny, it’s nice to meet you Ailsa and Walt,” she said and strapped her shield behind her. “Nice to meet you too, are you really a knight?” Walt asked causing Ailsa to tap him and give him a ‘that’s-not-polite’ look. He shrugged but Ailsa only shook her head. “Yes I am,” Jenny said “I know what you’re thinking, ‘why is a knight using shield skill when she can just kill with her sword’” she looked at Walt and Ailsa, both of whom did not argue that they were thinking it. “I am very afraid of pain, it hurts a lot in this game,” she explained. Ailsa and Walt looked at each other confused. The pain in Fantasy was not real. Players only knew they were in pain or were injured but did not feel any real pain. Ailsa was about to ask her what she meant when another sound came from the forest. This time, it was a loud, deafening roar that caused shook the forest and caused the birds to take to the sky. “What the hell is that?” Ailsa yelled as a ten feet tall behemoth stepped out of hiding and stalked toward them. “The Wolf King, I’ve been searching for him for days,” Jenny said and removed her shield again, holding it out in front of her. “And you planned to kill him with that?” Walt said, a little rudely but Jenny only raised her shoulders and gave him a half-ashamed look. He sighed and turned to face the beast which stood like a man but had black fur covering its body from head to toe, it was growling and showed its long sharp fangs. Its eyes were red and seemed to be glowing. “Oh my goodness, how the hell are we supposed to kill that thing, Walt?” Ailsa screamed as she watched the beast move towards them. Walt quickly accessed the situation and took charge as fast as he could. “Jenny, attack him from the front. Use your defense skills and try to slow it down,” “Okay,” “Ailsa, you and I will attack from either side. Giving blows as hard as we can,” “Okay,” “Let’s kill this thing,” Walt said and they all fell into battle form. Charging towards the beast as it came. Jenny summoned one of her defense skills and dashed towards the Wolf King. The beast held up it two large paws and brought it down forcefully on her shield. It continued to do that and was breaking the defense bit by bit. Meanwhile, Walt and Ailsa ran to either side of the monster and jumped to attack it. Walt managed to stab its side, causing it to growl in pain. Ailsa sliced the tip of it ear off, earning a howl from it. The beast now infuriated started to swat recklessly at Walt and Ailsa, both of whom dodged its attacks. Ailsa jumped and brought her daggers down on its foot. It howled in pain again, holding both paws up as it did. Walt saw this opening and ran towards it with a battle cry. Once he got near the beast, he lunged off his feet and gave a death blow with his sword. The blow spilled the Wolf King from his neck to his side and Walt landed on his feet as the beast fell to the ground. Jenny and Ailsa cheered and whooped as the beast laid in its own pool of blood. “Wow, you’re really impressive fighters,” Jenny said to them after they had left the battle scene. They told her they were heading north and she was going in that direction as well. “So, how come you can feel pain? You aren’t supposed to,” Ailsa was the one who asked. Jenny blushed and rubbed her arm in an embarrassed manner. “Well, I’ve actually died thrice in this game and had to be resurrected thrice,” she said. Walt and Ailsa looked at each other with wide eyes. “Three times?” Walt said, surprised. Jenny nodded and sighed. Looking at her, Walt kept feeling he had seen her before. Then Ailsa said something that made her laugh and Walt suddenly remembered. In his previous life, he had known a knight who was skilled in defense just like her but her name was not Jenny, it was Jessica. Jessica and Ailsa had been friends in his past life, after her death, he found her picture and contact in her phonebook but he hadn’t connected the two until now. Jenny continued to explain how each time she played the game now, she always felt real pain and even after leaving the game, she still felt the remnants. “I suppose no one else had died three times,” she said with a nervous laugh. Ailsa smiled and tried to comfort her. “Well, you wouldn’t get hurt so much if you have people looking out for you,” Ailsa said and looked at Walt expectantly. He frowned at her, confused for a while before he realized what she was trying to do. “oh, right. Yes, you would be safer if you had other people around,” he said. “I suppose…” Jenny replied with a resigned tone. “How would you like to join our small team?” Walt offered. Jenny’s eyes flicked from Walt to Ailsa who was beaming at her. Finally, her face broke into a smile. “Really? Yes, I would love to be on your team,” she said. “Awesome! We should really get a team name,” Ailsa said and kept chattering on. She seemed to have forgotten about their earlier argument and Walt was glad about that. Ailsa talked to Jenny who seemed to warm to her immediately and they steadily made their way north.
