9 Elf Doesn't Get Cold

Walt and Ailsa woke into the real world and realized that it was not even up to a day that had gone by. It felt very weird for Ailsa to adjust because in her mind, weeks had gone by but it was not even up to a day. “You’ll get used to it eventually,” Walt said as they ate “one time, I spent four months in Fantasy and only two days had passed here.” Ailsa widened her eyes when he said this. She took another mouthful of the noodles they ordered and realized she was starving. All the food and energy she took in while playing the game did nothing to sustain her real body. She also realized her Fantasy body was way stronger than the real one and she started to miss it. “Let’s stay longer when we play next, I really like the game,” Ailsa said with her mouth full, causing Walt to laugh. “Of course you do, elves are strong. You’re so lucky,” he said and she stuck her tongue out at him. Then they fell into a comfortable silence. “So,” Ailsa said after a while “it must suck that you have to start all over again uh?” Walt looked at her questioning eyes and smiled. “Yeah, it does,” he said and poked at his takeout box then sighed and set it aside “well, you know I told you that I quit my job because I wasn’t happy…” “Uh, yeah…” “Well, that’s not the whole truth,” he looked at her and cleared his throat before he continued “my former boss at Minan, Heather, is a two-faced son of a b***h. He made a bet once that I could beat someone in a game. He set up the game without my knowledge but I lost to the person and lost some important equipment. I got blamed for the loss and I didn’t understand why it was such a big deal until later when someone told me about the bet. After that loss, I was treated badly by most of the executives at the company, including Heather himself.” “Wow, I had no idea Walt…you never said anything…” she said with a somber voice. He held her hand and smiled. “It’s okay, I got revenge and now that account is at level one. They will never find someone as good as me to play for them again,” he said cockily, which drew laughter from Ailsa. He actually did not learn about the bet until much later in his former life, by then it was too late to make amends. He could not tell Ailsa that though she knew nothing about his reincarnation and he wanted it to stay that way. “Well, I know what’ll get your mind off of all that. A rousing session of Fantasy,” Ailsa said and beamed at Walt. They cleared out the boxes and plugged the console back in. Walt pressed play and they were back in Fantasy, right where they left at the entrance to Elves valley. “It’s still exactly the same,” Ailsa said to Walt as they materialized. “Hey, there you are,” Jenny’s voice sang out to them and they turned around to see the knight standing right where she and Walt had been staying “I’m sorry I went offline so suddenly, I had to quickly check on something,” she said and approached them. “It’s alright,” Walt said, “although, I think we should exchange real-life contacts so we can communicate offline.” “Yeah, okay,” Jenny said and through the in-built system of texting, she passed on the information to Walt and Ailsa. “Cool, well…now I think we should head northeast toward Echo Corridor,” Walt said but Jenny frowned at that and looked at Ailsa but she seemed clueless and it was clear she would do anything Walt said. “Why Echo Corridor? It’s really cold there and we’re terrans, remember? Well, you and I are,” Jenny complained to Walt. “I know it’s cold there, but there’s a lot more to be gotten there. There are fewer people and more adventures. The land is filled with all sorts of treasures that haven’t even been discovered yet. If we go there, we have a greater chance of upgrading our skills and getting higher experience points,” Walt said. He sounded so convincing that Jenny figured he was probably an experienced player that had lost his equipment. “Hmm, okay…yeah that makes sense,” she said. “Ailsa?” Walt looked at his girlfriend. “Hmm?” she said. She was not really paying attention to their conversation, she was just glad to be back in the game because the outfit was so cute and she felt so powerful. “Are you okay with going to Echo Corridor?” he asked her and she nodded quickly. Walt smiled and they were soon off. Ailsa held his hand as they made their way northeast to the coldest region in Fantasy. Walt felt a little bad for making them go there. He was glad that Ailsa was so trusting of him and would do what he said and that Jenny was not so hard to convince. The truth was that he had a secret reason for going to Echo Corridor. When he was playing the game with his former account, he had gotten a serial hidden task that unlocked another task – Fallen Temple–Battle of Ambert. The task would allow him to level up quickly and increase his skills exponentially. He did not want either of his teammates to know about it yet, so he would just tell them where to go.  Echo Corridor was very far. They walked for a long time and eventually made camp. Jenny told Walt and Ailsa about the times she had been resurrected and how she barely lasted a week each of those times. She said she would have probably been killed by that Wolf King or his wolves if they had not helped her. Ailsa laughed when Jenny said she was considering begging the Wolf King for her life. Jenny also said the one thing she was really good at was defensive skills and offered to teach them both. The next day, they resumed their journey and it started to get really cold. Walt and Jenny were shivering but as Walt expected, Ailsa seemed immune to the cold and walked with her shoulder held high. Her clothes only covered the basic parts of her but she still wasn’t cold. Jenny wore her armor and Walt was wearing the suit of mail made for swordsmen but they were freezing. “There’s an NPC building up ahead, we should stop there to rest and get some equipment for the cold,” Walt announced. “Cold? You guys are cold?” Ailsa said and laughed but stopped when Walt shot her a look. She stuck her tongue out at him and smiled a little smugly “aww, poor terrans,” she said again and laughed then bounced ahead of them. Walt and Jenny laughed at her antics despite the fact that they were freezing their butts off. The NPC building turned out to be two buildings. A hotel and a tavern. The three stepped into the tavern which had a hearth burning at each end and was very warm. There were a lot of players inside and they were all clad in winter clothes and had hot beverages or meals in front of them. For a minute Walt thought about how amazing it was that they needed to buy meals in this game and actually felt hungry and tired yet when they get to the real world, the food they ate did nothing for their bodies. “Oh, I want hot tea,” Jenny said. “Okay, how much do we have all together?” Walt said and they counted their money. He and Ailsa had twenty gold pieces, ten silver pieces, and seven copper pieces. Jenny has six gold pieces and two silver pieces. Walt collected all the money and bought them each a hot meal and hot tea which cost them two silver pieces. “Why is this so delicious,” Jenny muttered as she stuffed her face with the bowl of food. Ailsa giggled and sipped her tea. “I asked the manager of the tavern, he told me that the hotel next door has a shop where they sell clothes and equipment we can use for the journey,” Walt said. “I don’t need clothes or equipment, I can’t feel the cold, plus I have my cloak already,” Ailsa said and Walt rolled his eyes at her. She stuck her tongue at him again which made Jenny laugh. “We know ma’am,” Walt said in an exasperated voice “Jenny and I aren’t so lucky. So, I calculated and we have enough money to buy equipment and spend a night in the hotel. But we’ll need to stop in other hotels as we go further. So we need to make money.” “How do we do that?” Jenny asked. “That’s the beauty of this place, there are caves filled with treasures waiting to be explored. There are magical objects we can find and exchange for money,” he replied. Jenny and Ailsa were satisfied with the plan and finished the rest of their meal. After they went into the hotel and bought all the equipment they needed and Ailsa bought a bracelet she liked despite Walt’s protest. Jenny got a room to herself while Ailsa and Walt shared a room and they slept.
