29 A Dangerous Foe

1709 Words
Over an hour had passed in real life since the match started and there were very few teams left on the field. Eyebrows were raised about alone player (Felix) being involved in the game, since it was being broadcasted live but Minan group was quick to explain that they had added Felix to the game this year as a sort of catalyst because the competition usually took a while before it ended but with him involved, they could be done in a week and it would be an extra challenge for the winner of the team match. It seemed like a rather convenient explanation but people started to really enjoy watching him fight and destroy the teams that he came into contact with. Another team that a lot of people were very interested in was the Green Light team. They were quick and agile and they had a lot of players with hidden professions which was rare. In the game world, three days had passed since they started the competition and everyone’s energy levels were low and they were all tired. Ailsa and Michael used their magic together to create a makeshift house made of vines and wood which they placed up in the trees to avoid sneak attacks. Ailsa healed everyone’s wounds and she took some time to regain her own strength by sleeping. Jenny and Hogan were outside, acting as sentries. Walt, Miranda, Scott, and Michael sat together in a corner of the treehouse, trying to put together a reasonable plan to defeat Felix. “It makes sense to attack him now. If we fight after the game, we might be too weak,” Michael said. “No. You don’t know him as I do. We have to wait. He’s playing too, he’ll also get tired,” Miranda argued and Scott hummed his agreement. The three of them turned to look at Walt, waiting for his own input. Their leader sighed and ran his hand through his hair, a habit he had become extremely fond of. “We can’t attack now,” he said and Miranda gave Michael an ‘I told you so’ look “but we can’t just wait either,” Walt added and Michael shot the look back at Miranda who rolled her eyes. “Okay? So, what the hell are we going to do?” she asked. “We need to create a plan that won’t put us on the defensive. The best thing to do is set a trap for him,” “A trap? Are we talking about the same Felix? He’ll see right through it.” Scott said and Miranda nodded. Michael looked at the two of them and wondered just how scary this Felix really was. He could understand Scott being apprehensive about going to fight but Miranda… “I know, I’m not an i***t. We’ll be smart about it. He would have obviously obtained some cards, so he has the map with him. If we plant our cards in a location, it will draw him to us, so we will have the advantage of surprise,” “Felix knows when people are hiding, I’ve seen it before,” Miranda said with a slight quake in her voice. “I know,” Walt replied “so have I. Jenny, Michael and Ailsa will combine their powers to help with camouflage and cloaking and if that doesn’t work…that’s where you come in,” “Me…? What-” “Guys! We have company,” Jenny announced from outside, interrupting their meeting. “I’ll tell you later,” Walt said and they all got up. Miranda went to wake Ailsa but she would not budge. “Walt, she’s not responding,” Miranda called out and Walt quickly ran over to see her, she was sleeping peacefully. He realized they had used up a lot of her strength, she needed enough rest. Explosions and cries of battle were all around them “Miranda,” he called her suddenly. She looked up at him, confused “this plan might go to s**t. If it does, you’re the one who has to kill Felix. You know what you have to do,” he said and her eyes glazed over, then she looked down. “What if I can’t?” she asked and looked back up at him. “Let’s not worry about that right now. Right now, let’s deal with the assholes disturbing my baby’s nap” he said and she laughed. They placed Ailsa back in a comfortable position and dashed outside to see Michael using his water polo spell on the last standing member of the group that attacked them. “Hey, you missed the show,” Jenny said with a chuckle. Michael picked up the team’s cards and flew up to Walt to hand it to him. Walt added it to the sack of cards they had already obtained. They had honestly lost count. They walked back into the treehouse, each one of them secretly hoping that defeating Felix would be as easy as that but knowing as well that it would not.     They were starting to really bore him. All the players seemed to be the same, coming at him with their passive-aggressive ‘we don’t have to fight’ attitude. Those were his thoughts as he twisted the hand of the final player and threw him against the rest. Felix walked up to them and their leader held up their cards in defeat. “Here! Just take it and leave us alone,” he whimpered, Felix scoffed and snatched the cards from him. It read Brave Heart team. Pathetic Sniveling team would have been more appropriate. He turned to walk away then heard one of them sigh in relief, so he turned and used an air bomb on them, which sucked them in, screaming before it imploded. He left the scene, laughing. It had been three days but he was still no closer to finding Green Light team than he had been in the beginning. It grated on his nerve but it was also kind of exciting for him, he had never had this much trouble finding anyone before and when he saw the file, someone that he had not seen in such a long time appeared right in front of him. Walt had a great team working for him but he had several loose ends. After walking for a few minutes, alone and thinking about changing his strategy, he suddenly came upon a waterfall. The water was crystal clear and came tumbling down like uncountable diamonds, the splashing sound filled the entire area and seemed to bring it to life. It was a very distracting and surreal sight, Felix smirked. It was obviously concocted by a magician or an elf to sidetrack their target. The target would probably walk to the waterfall to drink or play and get trapped or attacked by the perpetrators. The best option for people who were aware of the ploy and wanted to avoid trouble was to walk away but he was not one of those people. So, he walked towards the waterfall, cupped his hands under it and took a long refreshing sip of the water. As he expected, a snap went off near him and all of a sudden, he was lifted off the ground and was caught in a cage-like trap that was big enough for five people. “There’s only one person. Flora, are you sure he’s even playing?” a voice said from below him. He looked down to see a two-woman team, an elf and a magician. Poor choice, neither of them could really fight. That would explain why they had to rely on sneak tactics like the one they used to trap him. He wondered if their team name was Girl Power team, the thought made him laugh out loud. His laugh caught their attention and they looked up at him. “He’s playing, Mina. Look at his pockets, he has tons of cards. Maybe he’s a lone player,” Flora replied to her teammate. She was a magician and knew their captive was one too, although, she could not see his scepter. “Hey!” Mina called out to Felix who looked at her and gave her a charming smile which caught her off-guard and made her blush “throw down your cards at us and we-” “Won’t hurt you, blah blah blah,” he interrupted her “how about you ladies let me down from here and we dance a little. Don’t you get tired of that overused line?” he said with the same charming smile on his face. He could get himself down from the trap at any point but he wanted to see what they would choose to do. Mina and Flora glanced at each other, then Mina held up her bow and arrow, aiming the arrow straight at his head. Flora took her lead and pointed her scepter at him. “Drop the cards or you’re toast,” Mina said and Felix sighed. “How disappointing,” he said. At that moment, Mina fired her arrow and Flora let out a fireball from scepter. Felix smiled as the attacks approached him, then he closed his eyes and a powerful explosion went off, blowing Mina and Flora backward. Their heads hit a tree and they were knocked unconscious. When Mina came to, she looked up and saw that their cage was blown into smithereens but there was no sign of their captive. “Looking for me?” Felix said. He was standing to the side and watching the girls as they struggled to look up at him. He was unscathed, not a single scratch on his body. Mina gasped, she looked at the site of the explosion then back at Felix who was now laughing. “Surprised?” he asked as he walked towards them, crouching down to take their cards “I’ll explain. You see, I’m an alchemist and my best skill, and also my favorite is ‘bite the dust’, which allows me to detonate myself and everyone around me.” Mina and Flora widened their eyes and he laughed, standing up. “That’s not all ladies. Bite the dust allows me to go back to any moment I want after detonation. That’s why I’m here, unharmed.” Felix leaned against the tree Mina hit and smiled at her. She glanced back at Flora then at the powerful man in front of her. With incredible effort, she forced herself on her knees and looked up at him. “We’ll work for you, make us part of your team,” she said and the smile on his face disappeared. “I work alone,” he said and flicked his hand at them, firing two darts from his sleeve at their necks, killing them instantly.
