30 A Week in Waiting

1522 Words
A whole week had passed since the competition started and now, there were only three dots on the map. That of Green Light team, Diamond team, and Thunder team. None of the cards Felix had in his possession showed up on the map because he had killed the owners and he was not a player. It made him a phantom on the field, untraceable. Only the Green Light team was aware of his existence in the game and even they were not certain how exactly they would get to him. Felix on the other hand had never been more excited. His map displayed three dots. He had been communicating with Heather in the real world and knew for a fact that the Green Light team had not been eliminated from the game. He did not expect any less from him anyway, he had the brains and the numbers. The problem he had now was finding out which one of the three was his target. He was currently tracking the team that was the closest to him. They seemed to be stagnant, so he suspected that they were employing some sort of sneak attack or diversion trick which made him remember the two-woman team he had beat a day or two ago. Sneak attacks were cowardly to him, he strongly believed in facing his opponent head-on, with dignity, not hiding and hoping they fall into a trap. As he came closer to the spot where the red dot was blinking, he had a sudden feeling of apprehension and quickly ducked his head down just as a fireball came flying towards him, barely missing him. When he came back up, he realized he was surrounded and his hair had been singed by the fire. He clenched his jaw and glanced around him quickly. There were six players. Two of them were knights, there was a magician, an air wolf, a demon cat, and a mad warrior. They all had their weapons out and looked ready to pounce on him. “What?” Felix said “no offer to let me live, so you can take my cards?” he asked and laughed. “If you’ve lasted this long, then you’re dangerous. We will fight you,” one of the knights replied to him. His laughter died down and his face etched into a chilling scowl. “Fight me then,” he said and they came at him all at once, with a battle cry on each of their lips. Felix flew up and pointed his scepter at the magician that caused his hair to burn. He summoned an overshoot ignition which detonated the magician instantly and blew away the members of his team that were around him. Felix laughed as they screamed for their fallen teammate. The demon cat launched herself in the air and cracked her whip at him, hitting him across the face. With an angry growl, he shot forward and fired another overshoot ignition at her, blowing her up. The others stood back with wide eyes as they watched their teammate fall in pieces from the sky. The parts of the exploded players disappeared. They would be reawakened in the Land of Origin. Felix landed back on the ground and held his hands up. He felt and looked like a god. “I thought you wanted to fight me, not play around,” he said and they all came at him this time. Every one of them started to swing at him. The air wolf slashed at his back with his claws and the knights used their swords to land successive hits on him. Felix managed to dodge most of their attacks but then suddenly, the mad warrior pushed himself off his feet and used his knee to hit Felix’ jaw, injuring him. Felix chuckled as he laid on the ground. They all came close to him, their weapons held up and ready to finish him. Then he looked up at them with a crazed glint in his eyes. He wiped the blood away from his mouth with his knuckle and smiled. The knight raised his sword to finish off the menace, then an explosion suddenly went off. The effect burned through the rest of the team, destroying them in an instant. Felix walked through the spot where they had first fired the shot that burned his hair. He had none of the wounds on him anymore. If all the teams he had fought previously were like this one, he might not have survived this long. He reached where their burned bodies lied and picked up their cards. Thunder team, it read. They put up a good fight. With a smile on his face, he held up the map, now there were two red dots. “I’m coming for you,”     Three miles away, Walt and the rest of his team heard the explosion go off. When they looked at their map, it showed only one red dot where it had been two. They glanced at each other with words unspoken. They all knew the same fate might be lying in wait for them and they were running out of time. “Look, I think we need to forget about the damn competition for now and get this guy off our backs,” Jenny said. “We have to be patient,” Scott replied. “To what end?” Michael said and they all started talking at once, except Ailsa and Walt. Ailsa was still a little hazy, she had taken two days to recover from fighting non-stop for five days and was not completely sure what side she stood in the argument. On one side, they could fight the final team and win then deal with Felix in a more open manner or they could take him on right now, they were strong and the forest could provide a good cover for a proper sneak attack. “Enough!” Walt yelled, shutting them up “you’re right Michael, he’s too dangerous to leave alone. We have to put our plan in motion now and we need to be careful about it. You all remember the plan, right?” he asked and they nodded their agreement except Ailsa who seemed so out of sorts. Walt noticed that she was not herself and pulled her aside to speak to her. “Hey, are you okay?” “Uh, I don’t really know…I mean, this is starting to get really messed up. I mean, you used to work for these people and they have such a vendetta against you. What if we do beat this…Felix guy and they send another person after you? After us? All because of a stupid game? This is, it’s too much Walt, I can’t…” she ranted, barely catching a breath as she spoke. Walt nodded and quickly drew her in for a hug. “It’s okay, it’s okay, I’m sorry I got you into this,” he said and pulled her back to look into her eyes “I know I used to work for them and that was one of the worst decisions of my life. I need you to understand that they are mercenaries and they are ruthless when it involves anything that hurts their pride…I should know…I’ve done such jobs for them before…but that’s not who I am anymore. I promise you, after this is over, if you want to end it, if you want to stop playing, we will. Okay?” he said and she let out a breath of relief then nodded slowly. He hugged her again and they walked to the others together. “Okay, the explosion occurred south of here, so we need to go in that direction and set up our attack there.” Michael said when Walt and Ailsa joined them. They took off and arrived at an appropriate location after ten minutes. The plan was very elaborate and had to be executed in a precise way. Michael, Ailsa and Jenny started to create a trap hole in the middle of the open ground. Ailsa and Michael did the heavy lifting and dug the hole without upsetting the natural balance of the forest floor, so it did not make the area seem unnatural. Then the three of them covered the hole with magic. Jenny used her shrouding spell, Michael and Ailsa tried their best to cover the hole using the vines and fallen leaves to make it look normal. When they were done, it looked perfect but the aura of magic in the air was overwhelming, so Ailsa used her control of nature to direct the natural smell of the forest around them, so that it masked the aura. It was not completely convincing but it was not overwhelming anymore and it would not be so suspicious since there were a lot of magical activities that went off there in the past week. “The final touch,” Walt said and handed Scott their cards. Scott used his summoning powers to conjure up clay figures that resembled each of them but could not move. He placed the cards in the hands of the figure that most resembled Walt. “You didn’t get the nose right,” Miranda teased him and they laughed, nervously. “Jenny, cloak us please.” Walt said and she did as she was told. They left the area and Michael set up a trigger alarm that would let them know when their trap was set off. Then they waited.
