31 The Final Hours

“Well folks, we are in the final hours of the most exhilarating competition of the year! There are only two teams left on the field, Green Light team and Diamond team. Along with Minan club’s unexpected yet, interesting lone player. I’m on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, wondering how this’ll play out. I know who I’m rooting for, do you?” the announcer blurted through Heather’s speaker. The powerful Minan executive sat behind his desk, with his hands clenched underneath his chin and a crazed look in his eyes as he stared at the big screen.   He knew he should be suspicious. He was following the map and once again the blinking red dot was stagnant. Another sneak attack, it was like the players had no other tricks up their sleeves but for some reason, this particular red dot was calling his name. It had to be them, he thought. Felix prided himself on being a simple man with simple ways. It was what, in his opinion, got the job done most of the time. When a plan was too elaborate or too complicated, it caused problems. That was part of why he did not believe in sneak attacks, there were too many unknows. What was the assurance that the target was not aware of the plan? And if the target was not aware, what was the assurance that it would work? Whereas, simple full-on attacks would cause a higher amount of damage, increasing the chances of winning. Well, as long as you were strong. Weaklings had to rely on plans. He was finally close to their location. He stayed hidden in a shrub and saw them huddled together. They seemed to be discussing something. Without thinking, he leapt out of the forest and let out an overshoot ignition at them, wiping them out totally. They melted to the ground like melted wax. He frowned and approached the odd sight, carefully. When he reached, he bent down and scooped up what seemed to be mud. By the time he realized what had happened, it was too late. In the distance, up in the sky and invisible to the naked eye, Ailsa and Michael undid their magic, right where Felix was standing. Which made him fall right into their trap hole which was designed with a sticky tar in the inside that made it impossible for him to escape. Ailsa and Michael immediately began to launch a series of attacks at the hole, Ailsa shot multiple arrows from Eclipse and Michael released simultaneous attacks of fireballs and water polo from his scepter. Scott was also at a safe distance, using his summoning powers to throw attacks at the trap hole. Walt was with Hogan and jenny. They surrounded the area where their nemesis was trapped in. His heart was in his throat as multiple explosions went off in the hole from all the attacks being launched at it. He felt really apprehensive because, even though he had seen Felix fall into the trap, he had expected him to react but he did not. Walt raised his hand to indicate the others to stop launching attacks, which they did. The entire forest was deathly silent. Walt held his breath as he stepped closer to the hole, he could not believe that they were so lucky to have ended everything so quickly. When he got there, he peered down and saw a protective bubble cover on the surface of the hole. Felix looked up at him and gave him a big grin. Walt widened his eyes and ran back as fast as he could. Then, an incredible explosion went off, knocking him to the ground. Jenny and Hogan ran to quickly help him to his feet. Scott, Ailsa and Michael were distraught. They did not know what to expect. Had their nemesis blown himself to pieces? Walt quickly recovered and told everyone to be on their guard. He, Jenny and Hogan stood, backing themselves when a loud laugh came from the path where Felix had first leapt to attack them. “Well, well, well,” Felix said, a smug smile on his face “what a nice welcome.” Jenny gasped, so did Hogan. Ailsa and Michael glanced at each other. He did not even look like a single piece of dirt had touched him. Walt clenched his jaw, angry at himself that he had underestimated the man. He was not the most valuable player at Minan for nothing. “Wow, he’s good looking,” Jenny whispered. Walt and Hogan turned to face her with an incredulous look on their face but she just shrugged. “Hello Felix,” Walt said and unsheathed his sword. Felix smiled and glanced around, as if he were looking for something. “Where are the rest of your team mates Walter?” Felix asked and Walt grinded his teeth. Since he started working at Minan, Felix was the only worker there who refused to call him Walt and insisted on calling him Walter despite multiple corrections. People told him it was only because Walt was almost as good as him and he felt threatened. “Some are up in the sky, aren’t they? How about her? In a tree?” he said and looked up “or maybe she’s in stealth mode, I saw that she can do that now. Tell her to come out so we can play, like old times.” Felix said and Walt clenched his jaw, tightening his grip on the hilt of his sword. “We don’t have to fight Felix,” Walt said, even though he knew it was a fruitless proposal. Felix burst out into laughter, covering his face as if he were enjoying a private joke. “You and I both know that’s not possible Walter. Heather is still a grumpy asshole and he wants his revenge,” Felix said and swept back his cloak, holding his scepter forward “So, how about we skip the chit chat and get right to it then?” Ailsa, Michael and Scott landed on the ground, right behind the rest of their team mates and Felix chuckled. “The whole team is here,” he said and glanced over them “well not everyone,” he made deliberate eye contact with Scott who darted his eyes away quickly. Walt noticed the exchange and in the split second that he glanced back to look at Scott, Felix launched himself in the air and pointed his scepter in their direction. Launching an overshoot ignition, causing severe damage to Walt and Hogan ad throwing them backwards. “No!” Ailsa screamed and threw herself forward to catch them both in her arms just before they hit the ground. Michael rushed forward and started throwing attacks at Felix, which gave Ailsa enough cover to start healing her fallen team mates. Jenny used her shielding skills to protected them from the return of fire from Felix. Scott used his summoning skills to call on tiny forest nymphs that crowded Felix and distracted him. “Ailsa! Can they walk?” Jenny called out, her defenses losing their hold. Ailsa’s eyes filled with tears as she tried, with shaky hands to heal them “Ailsa!” “I’m trying!” Ailsa screamed back, trying to concentrate her energy on healing them. “Enough!” Felix screamed and blasted all the nymphs away. In that moment, Walt and Hogan managed to stand up, with help from Ailsa. “Retreat!” Walt screamed out. With that, Michael used all his strength to drive the end of his scepter into the ground, causing tremors to run through the ground and knock Felix off his feet. They all started to run away from the deadly man. Felix stood and dusted himself off with a smirk. He was about to run after them when something caught his eye. He stepped towards the trap hole they had set up for him and saw their cards on the ground, right next to the hole. He picked the cards up and flew up into the sky, to scout them out. Sure enough, they had cloaked themselves but they were still easy to follow.   Up in the trees, unknown or unimportant to neither Green Light team nor Felix, the Diamond team witnessed the latter part of the battle and watched Felix chase their opposing team. “What do you think we should do Plato?” Dalia asked. She was an elf, the only one in her team and just like Ailsa, she was kind and was deeply disturbed by the fight they had witnessed. It was not part of what they had signed up for. “What do mean?” Edric replied “it’s not our business. We’re meant to fight the last team. When they’re done with whatever that was, we will. So, until then, I suggest we wait,” he said and Dalia narrowed her eyes at him. Edric was a powerful magician but he was sometimes dense. “Does that look normal to you?” Haley shot back, she was a magician too and she was also disturbed by the battle “we should do something, right? Plato?” she asked their leader who was stoic and straight faced. They all respected him and trusted his decisions. They had lasted that long in the game and the competition because of his assertiveness. So, whatever decision he made, they would follow it. “We don’t know enough now to do anything,” Plato said and clenched his jaw. He was a mad warrior but there was nothing mad about him. He was calm and strategic and even though the scene had bothered him, he was not one to rush into anything. “Let’s follow them and see what happens,” he told them and they went off, following the fleeing team and their pursuer.
