24 Sardi City

Defeating the Plunder team was not only a level boost for them but also turned out to be a heroic act. They met other teams along the way who were more friendly and praised them for defeating Barnett. They were headed to the Ocean of Sigh but because they were coming from Echo Corridor, they had to pass through Shewhart town where the team competitions were to be held in about a month. They saw a lot of players there, with teams of varying numbers. Because they had done a lot of high-level tasks in the game, they were easily recognizable to most of the players there. Plus, they had yellow epic equipment which was rare and precious. They stayed in an inn for the night and planned out their next moves. The Ocean of Sigh was located in Sardi City in the southeast, there had been reports of a monster that cried on every moonlit night and disturbed the peace of the surrounding city. “I’ll bet it’s another dragon,” Jenny said. It was the next day and they had started to make their way to Sardi city. “Maybe,” Walt replied. He believed they were stronger now and should have no problem defeating any monster. Although, whatever tasks lay ahead of them would be significantly harder than the previous ones. “I don’t like the ocean,” Miranda said. “Why not? It’s so big and sparkly and beautiful-” “And wet,” she interrupted Ailsa’s dreamy voice “I don’t like getting wet,” “Well, I don’t like looking at your face, but I still deal with it,” Hogan said. Miranda gasped, feigning offense and the rest of them laughed. Ailsa looked over at Walt and saw that he seemed a bit disturbed, so she walked over to his side and held his hand. “Hey, what’s the matter?” she asked. He looked down at her and smiled. “Nothing really, just a little apprehensive about the team competition…that’s all,” “It’s still a month away, we’ll make it,” “Yeah I know we’ll make it, it’s just,” he paused and sighed then looked into her eyes “I don’t know if we’ll win, you know?” he said and she smiled “Win or lose, we’re a great team and you’re a great leader,” she said and raised her head to kiss him. He kissed her back and smiled. Then they heard Hogan make a howling noise. “I love you, Walt, no I love you Ailsa,” he said then made kissing noises. “Ugh, grow up,” Miranda said and punched him in the shoulder. They all laughed, including Scott who felt a little out of place in their team. They walked the rest of the way, stopping at NPC hotels at night to rest. They arrived in Sardi city in two days. It was a huge city, with walls that seemed to be a hundred feet high. There was a line of people waiting to pass through the guarded gates. They joined the line and could hear the crash of the ocean waves all around them. The air was heavy with the fresh smell of the ocean and the sky was a brilliant splash of orange, red and yellow. “It’s so beautiful,” Ailsa said and Miranda made a gagging sound. “The air smells like water,” she said, sounding miserable. “Are you going to be this way for the entire trip?” Jenny asked and placed her hand on her hip, raising her brow at the demon cat. “Maybe,” she replied and pouted then turned her face away. “Come on, let’s get going,” Walt said and they walked through the gates into the city. It was huge, there were buildings ahead that were built on hills and glowed with night light. All around them, houses and stalls popped up with lanterns brightening them up. Unlike the villages, they had been to and Shewhart town, the roads were not cobbled and had a lot of pot-holes but everywhere buzzed with excitement. It was not difficult to locate an inn where most adventurers where staying. After checking in, they headed down to the inn’s dining hall where a system prompt character was telling a story about a green-eyed monster that cried every night the moon is full and shines brightly. Many had tried to fight the creature but it always fled to the little island off the coast of Sardi city, right in the middle of the Ocean of Sigh. He said that whenever brave warriors tried to say across to the island, they were always attacked by the protector of the ocean, and their boats or ships were wrecked. They needed someone to rid them of the monster before the next full moon, which was in two days. “Why do all these monsters have to be such a pain,” Hogan grumbled. Walt thought about the situation carefully and a plan quickly clicked in his mind. “We are going to defeat that creature tomorrow,” he announced, “Scott, you have the summoning skill, if I remember correctly?” “Yeah,” “Okay, according to the story, there’s another sea creature that protects the waters. Using a ship or boat to sail over will be pointless. Do you think you can summon the creature to help carry us over to the island?” he asked and Scott frowned, thinking. Then he looked up into Walt’s eyes and nodded. “Okay good,” “Don’t you think that we should attack it in two days? On the full moon?” Jenny asked. “No,” Walt said and waved his hand “look, this is a big city and there are tons of adventurers just like us here. We won’t be handed the task on a silver platter like we were in the village. There, we were the only good adventurers to pass through the place. Here, there are probably other ones as good as us and they’ll be thinking about attacking the full moon. I don’t want to have to fight over rewards again,” Walt said and smiled at Michael. “Yeah, that was fun,” Miranda said and laughed. “No, it wasn’t,” Hogan retorted. Miranda smirked and leaned back into her chair with her hands behind her head “that’s because you were on the losing side,” she replied and Hogan lurched at her, knocking her off her chair. “Get off of me, you dumb oaf,” she yelled and kicked his face. Walt sighed and facepalmed. After they managed to settle down, with help from the others, Walt began to explain the plan to them. When he was done, they were put in a trance. “Task unlocked: high-level boss, Eternal tide – weeping of the Watermark Dragon,” the system announced and they were brought back. “I knew it was another dragon,” Jenny groaned.   The next day, at the break of dawn, the Green Light’s team of seven checked out of the inn and made their ways to the docks of Sardi city. The docks were already brimming with activities, there were giant ships and small canoes lining the waters. Fishermen were stringing up their nets and rowing into the waters. Walt was surprised because he had assumed that the docks would be empty. “What should we do boss?” Miranda asked. “Michael and I were talking to one of the residents yesterday, there’s a beach that no one uses a few miles from here, we should go there,” Ailsa said. Walt raised a brow at her. “When were you talking to one of the residents?” he asked and she rolled her eyes. “Does it matter?” Jenny replied “let’s go,” she said and Michael transported them to the beach. The white sand of the beach was covered with seashells of all shapes, sizes, and colors. It stretched for miles in both directions and had palm trees that stretched over the crystal clear, shimmering waters. Ailsa wondered why no one used it. “Okay Scott, do your thing,” Walt said. The air wolf stepped forward into the undulating waters, the push and pull of the waves nearly sweeping him off his feet. With his back turned to his team, he closed his eyes and brought his palm to his fist. The current of the ocean would allow him to sense all the creatures present in it. After a minute of searching, he felt the presence of a strong magical creature and summoned it to them. “Whoa!” Miranda screamed in surprise. The beast Scott has summoned was a red sea serpent with a long snout, whiskers that moved on their own, and water lined body. It was as huge as the Ice Spell Dragon but had no limbs and they could not tell how long it was because it reared only its head and part of its body at them. Scott raised his hands at the creature and whispered a spell under his breath. The serpent screeched then lowered its head to him, allowing Scott to pet it. Scott laughed and turned to face the others “come on, he’s friendly,” he said and the others made their way over to him. Slowly, they all climbed on to the serpent. Scott climbed on last, holding two of the creature’s whiskers. “Ready?” he asked and they were off.
