Sherry's POV
There's an old saying. “ When it rains, it pours,”. In my situation, it was literal.
After talking to Tyler and after he insisted that I come to the hotel, I tried to get out of the muddy ditch, which appeared to be an impossible task.
The tires wouldn't move no matter how much I tried. I took my phone to call a tow truck, only for my battery to run out just as the phone rang.
I searched my car for a charger, and then I remembered that I had left the charger in the family car.
I looked at Nina's hand; her allergies seemed to be looking better, and the medicine was beginning to work. Calculating the distance, I figured that Nina and I would walk to the party. It was only a few minutes away.
I hadn't anticipated the sudden weather change as the rain started to pour. The umbrella was blown away by the wind, so I took off my coat to at least try and protect Nina from the rain, which wasn't much help either. By the time we got to the hotel, we were drenched in rain.
“I'm sorry baby, we look like a hot mess,” I said and tried to fix her hair.
“ It's okay, Mommy, I'm fine. Daddy and Leith are waiting for us. Let's go,” she said, not minding at all that we were a mess.
I stood outside the door to the private room, soaking wet, and as I was about to open the door, I heard my son's loud voice coming from inside.
“ Don't wait for them. It doesn't matter if my sister and mom aren't here. My birthday is perfect with just you and dad.” Leith said.
Then, his secretary chimed in with a laugh. “ Am I more important to you than your mom?”
Leith affectionately answered. “ Yeah, you should be my mom! Why aren't you my mom? It's all dad's fault,”
Instead, Tyler sighed with a laugh and said. “ Okay, okay, it's your birthday; you can say what you want. It's my fault for not choosing a mom you like,”
Looking at the three of them together, they looked like a real family; if anything, Nina and I looked like the ones who didn't belong there.
I have had my doubts about Tyler's relationship with his secretary Zoe, and now, I finally have the answers I didn't even know I was looking for.
Tyler said it himself. He was sorry for not choosing Zoe to be his wife. The last seven years of our marriage meant nothing to him. The love I have given him meant nothing to him.
I stumbled into the room and shocked everyone with my rain-soaked and muddy appearance. With everyone's eyes on us, one of my son's friends spoke out.
“ Your mom looks dirty!” He said to Leith.
I watched the look on Leith's face. He was horrified and mostly embarrassed. He quickly protested. “ She's not my mom!” Then she rushed over to push me, shouting. “ You always embarrass me. You shouldn't have come!”
To Nina's horror, I fell back. She stood in front of me to defend me, with her small, broken voice, she said to her brother. “ You can't treat mom like that. It's not her fault.,”
My husband, Tyler, instead of standing up for me and reprimanding his son, turned to Nina and scolded her instead. Making my daughter feel like she was wrong for standing up for me.
Zoey couldn't miss the opportunity to add fuel to the fire as she also turned to scold Nina.” He's the birthday boy, and you're being a bad sister for scolding him,” Zoey said.
I don't care if Zoey frames me, I don't even care if she constantly makes me feel like the third wheel in my own marriage, but what I care about is Nina.
Not only did she cause my daughter to have an allergic reaction, but now she's making it look like Nina was scolding Leith. All of that and Tyler were blind to it.
With the support from the mother he wanted and his father, Leith felt even more powerful and pushed Nina down, calling his sister and me “bad sister, and bad mom”. He insisted that he didn't want us at his party.
His words went straight to the heart, just thinking about how difficult it was to bring him into the world safely, thinking about how I almost died just to make sure that he lives and survives during birth.
Soaked and dizzy from the rain, I tried to get up on my own a few times. Just then, I could feel my body burning up, clear signs of an early fever. The more I tried to get up, the harder it became.
Instinctively, I thought about asking Tyler for help, but when I glanced his way, he was too busy comforting Leith with Zoey. It didn't even hit him that I was still on the floor, struggling to get up.
The guests murmured and laughed, while Zoey stood there with a smug smile on her face as Leith clung tightly to her hand.
Now, once again, here I am. My husband and son chose Zoey over me. I am sick, my daughter is sick, and to Tyler, all of this means nothing. Even with all of that, I felt anger and resentment boiling in my heart.
With all the strength I had, I found my feet, without even thinking, I ran my hand across her face, a slap that sent her stumbling back and falling to the ground, hitting the table and breaking a few glasses behind her.
“ Are you crazy?” Tyler said and raised his hand to hit me, only for Nina to step in and say.
“ Don't hit my mommy!” Nina cried out.
He quickly put down his hand, only to run to Zoey's side, along with Leith.
“Are you okay?” Tyler asked Zoey as he ran his hand softly across her now red face. While I stood there with a fever.
He glanced at me with a murderous look on his face. He came to me and grabbed my hand.
“ Look at what you've done! How did I marry such an ungrateful woman like you? Zoey went out of her way to make this party happen, and this is how you thank her? Apologize! ” He roared at me while his tight grip on my hand caused me pain.
Everyone was looking at me, I could hear the whispers as the other parents made snide remarks.
“ Apologize!” He said and pulled me to where Zoey was. With a hard push, he shoved me to the ground, my hands and knees on the ground, right where the scattered glasses were.
“ Daddy, stop!” Nina cried out and tried to help me up.
I glanced up, and Tyler was looking at me with daggers in his eyes. Though my knees felt like they were on fire, though I could feel the pieces of glass piercing through my flesh, and even though I was down on my knees, I would never apologize for standing up for myself and my daughter.
“ It's okay, Nina, mommy did a bad thing, she will be fine after she apologizes to Aunty Zoey,” Tyler said and grabbed Nina's arm, only for her to cry out in pain.
“ What's wrong?” He said, inspecting Nina's wrist. It was still red and inflamed.
“ What the hell did you do to my daughter!” Tyler roared.
Even through all the pain I was feeling, I managed to stand up, with the shards in my hand, I took a deep breath and glanced at Zoey, who was smirking, showing me that she would always have power over me, no matter what I did or didn't do.
“ Sure… It's all my fault.” I said and took Nina's hand.
At this point, trying to explain myself was pointless because no matter what explanation I gave him, it would always be my fault.
He glanced down, and when he noticed the blood on my hand, I saw something flicker in his eyes, panic? maybe? Regret perhaps?
“ Is that blood?” He asked and grabbed my hand.
“ Tyler… my face,” Zoey cried out, and just like that, Tyler ran to her rescue.
“ You bad mom! You hurt Aunty Zoey’s beautiful face. You're jealous because she's more beautiful than you. I don't want you here, you ruined my party!” Leith said to me.
I know that he is still too young to understand, but his words struck like lightning. My own son was kicking me out of his party. As his father said, it's his party. He can say whatever he wants to.
“ Fine, then I'll go,” I said and took Nina's hand. With that, I walked out of the hotel, limping and bleeding, Nina was also beginning to look a little pale.
