Downpour soaked the streets as I accompanied my daughter Nina to the birthday party. Although both I and Nina were in a rather disheveled state at that moment, Nina squeezed my hand gently to comfort me. “It's okay, Mommy, I'm fine. Daddy and Leith are waiting for us.”

I gave her a reassuring smile and brushed the messy strands of hair from her forehead.

Just as I reached for the door handle, I heard my son's loud voice coming from inside.

“Don't wait for them. It doesn't matter if my sister and mom aren't here. My birthday is perfect with just you and Dad.”

“Am I more important to you than your mom?” I recognized Zoey’s voice—my husband’s secretary.

“I want you to be my mom. Why aren't you my mom? It's all Dad's fault.” Those words came from Leith, the son I’d sacrificed everything to raise. I couldn’t breathe; the weight of betrayal crushed my chest

Instead, Tyler sighed with a laugh and said. “Okay, okay, it's your birthday; you can say what you want. It's my fault for not choosing a mom you like.”

What was I even hoping for? That this man would stand up for me? How ridiculous. All strength drained from my body, leaving me weak and hollow.

I was tired, tired of the endless, thankless nanny-like life, and tired of being disrespected and invisible. This time, I’d make a choice: I’d take my daughter and leave.

Chapter 1: A Mother's Love
Sherry's POV “Mommy? Where's Daddy and Leith? Everyone is waiting for them,” Nina, my cute six-year-old daughter, asked me. She's right about one thing. They should have been here hours ago. I was beginning to get worried, wondering if something might have happened. Afraid to alarm my daughter, I gave her a fake smile and said. “ Let me call daddy, I'm sure they're already on their way,” I said and gently patted her head. “ Okay, I'll sit and wait for them,” Nina said with an excited tone. At this point, I think that she was more excited about this party than all of us, Leith included. Without hesitation, I dialed my husband's number. The phone rang for some time, and as I was about to hang up, someone answered but didn't say anything. Instead, I was the one who spoke out. “ Tyler, where are you?” I said to my husband on the phone. I was worried; it was getting late, and everyone was waiting for them. It's our son's birthday, though Leith and Nina are fraternal twins; this year, Leith wanted to have his own party. I guess it was bound to happen at some time. Though it was less of a hassle to organize one party for both of them, I knew that a time like this would eventually come. They're both growing into their personalities; they no longer share the same interests. I simply had no choice but to organize two parties this year, starting with Leith’s. He wanted a themed party. I thought it would be an easy task to do. That was until I found out how difficult it was to put together a huge themed party for a six-year-old. When he showed me the cake he wanted, my jaw almost dropped to the floor because for the last six years, I have always made their birthday cakes for them. As hard as the cake he wanted looked, I knew that I couldn't disappoint him. So, for the last two weeks, I took baking and sugar craft classes, which weren't easy. I even have the scars from the burnt sugar to show. After eight hours of baking and molding the fondant, I finally made the cake he wanted. For me, it was all worth it. I want to see the look on his face when he sees not only the cake but the whole setup for his party. “ Hello? Who's this?” A soft female voice answered my husband's phone. I knew that voice all too well. It was his secretary Zoey. When Tyler is at home, I am not even allowed to touch his phone, let alone answer it, and yet Zoey has full access to it, so much so that she sometimes even uses his phone to post on his social media pages. Like last month, Tyler told me that he had a work trip in Greece, so naturally, his secretary had to come with him. Even though he said it was a work trip, the social media posts said something entirely different. Of course, I had to address the matter. Tyler told me that I was being paranoid and insecure, insisted that he loves only me, and that nothing is going on between him and Zoey. You know what the sad thing about all of this is? It is what I have been waiting for seven years for Tyler to take me to Greece for our honeymoon. It never happened. At first, he couldn't afford it, and he had to work on his career. I didn't mind, as a man, I know he had his pride, as his wife, it was my duty to support him. So I stayed by his side while he worked on his career. Then, his career was stable, but he was simply too busy. He hardly ever had time for himself, and with a promise, he said that he would take me on our honeymoon the first chance he got. That still hadn't happened. Afraid that I would once again be accused of being jealous of his secretary Zoey, I could only swallow the hard lump in my throat. No matter how bitter it was, I had to swallow. “ Can you put my husband on the phone?” I said to Zoey in a flat tone. “ Who is it?” I heard Tyler asking in the background, meaning that he was fully aware that Zoey answered his phone. “ It's Sherry… Tyler, she sounds upset, maybe I shouldn't have answered your phone,” she said over the phone. “ Did she say anything to you?” Tyler asked. Even if I couldn't see him, judging by his tone, it was clear that he was angry. “ I'm sorry…” she said. Even though it was over the phone, I could tell that she was fake-crying. I rolled my eyes. Here we go again. Zoey's crying wolf again. “ Sherry, what the hell did you say to Zoey? She's upset!” He roared over the phone. My husband didn't even ask if I had said anything to Zoey; just because she said I did, he believes it. “ I… Look, I didn't say anything. Where are you? Everyone is waiting for you and Leith,” I said to him. “ Yeah, about that. There has been a change of plans,” Tyler said. Taking me by surprise, we literally spoke this morning before he left with Leith to get his haircut and pick up his costume. He knows that I had the whole backyard set up for Leith's party, and now he is telling me that he changed the plan? “ What do you mean you changed the plan?” I asked him. “ Zoey thought it would be best to have the party at the hotel. We booked a private suite; everything is already set. Bring Nina to the hotel,” he said flatly. “ You did what?” I said to him, at that moment, I could feel my heartbeat racing. I went through so much to set this party, and because of Zoey, they suddenly changed the plans? “ Dad, why do you have to call them? Aunty Zoey is here. We don't need them,” Leith said in the background. “ Zoey thought it would be best? Tyler, I am Leith's mother. Since when does she get to have a say about my son's life?” I said to him, my voice was breaking. “ Sherry, stop being childish. Leith is tired of the same old boring parties at home. He wanted something different, and Zoey helped him. You should be thanking her instead of throwing tantrums like a child,” Tyler said with an icy tone. So I spent hours preparing for his party, and with that, just one hotel booking. Is Zoey the mother of the year? Not only that, but I also need to thank her. As upsetting as that was, I simply didn't have the time to argue. It was still Leith's birthday, no matter where it was being held. “ Tyler, I went out of my way to set this up. At the least, you could have told me that you were planning on changing the venue,” I said. “Stop it with the nagging. Just hurry and get here, we're not going to wait for you, Leith is ready to cut his cake,” he said to me and hung up. Cake? I looked at my burnt hands, full of scars and bandages, all the pain I suffered to bake Leith a cake, and they're not even going to use it? “ Fine…” I said and hung up. In my moment of weakness, without even realizing it, a tear rolled down my face. As I was about to break down, Nina came in. She was scratching herself. “ Mommy…” she said with a teary voice. Panic kicked in, and I quickly wiped away the tears. “ Nina? What's wrong?” I said to her, “ I don't know…” Only then did I notice the bracelet on her wrist. It was silver, and Nina was allergic to silver. Her skin was already beginning to form a rash. “ Where did you get that?” I said and quickly took it off. “ Aunty Zoey gave it to me,” she said. I ran to the bathroom and took out her allergy ointment. I began to rub it on her, and she bit her lips. I knew that she was in pain. “ I'm sorry, Mommy, but Aunty Zoey said she gave the same one to Leith. She said I should match with my twin brother,” Nina said with a teary voice. “ It's okay, baby, it's not your fault,” I said, trying to hold in the anger that was piling up inside. Leith doesn't share the same allergies as Nina, something his father knows, so I am wondering why the hell he even allowed Zoey to give Nina something like this. Though I applied the ointment, the rash was just getting more inflamed. At this point, I needed to rush my daughter to the emergency room. I carried Nina out, only to bump into Michelle, the party planner. “ Sherry, what's going on?” She asked me, looking at my daughter in my arms. “ Nina had an allergic reaction. I have to take her to the hospital, and about the party, I'll pay you for the job, but there won't be a party here today. Can you get someone to clear this out?” I said to her, “ What? Sherry, we have been planning this for weeks,” she said. “ Michelle, I can't talk about this, I have to get my daughter to the hospital,” I said. “ Okay, I understand. I'll take care of everything,” she said with a low and understanding tone. I managed to get Nina to the car, and on my way to the hospital, I could see that Nina wasn't feeling well. Reaching out to check her temperature, I almost hit an oncoming car, I quickly swerved and avoided the car, only to end up in a muddy ditch on the side of the road. The other driver slowed down, not to check on my daughter and me, but rather to hurl insults my way before speeding off. I didn't even care, I just wanted to check on my daughter. Before even that was done, my phone rang again, it was Tyler. Even though we need to get to the party, Nina's health is more important. “ Hello,” I said, only for Tyler to yell at me on the other side of the phone. “ What the hell is taking you so long? You'd better get here right now!” he said. “ Tyler, Nina is sick and we…” I said and got interrupted mid-sentence. “ If you don't want to come, then don't, just don't use Nina as an excuse!” He said angrily. “ But she really is s…” I said and got interrupted yet again. “ Unless she's on her deathbed, I want you here,” he said and hung up he didn't even bother to ask what was wrong with Nina. “ It's okay mommy… I feel better now,” Nina said to me. She looked to be a bit better, but I was still worried.
