/ FREYA /
A week later
I hadn’t gotten used to the fact that I had lost my son, though, of course, there was nothing more to do than to focus on the one I had with me.
“ Ma’am, you look pale,” Sasha who sat with me worried.
“ It’s fine really,” I forced a smile so she wouldn’t be bothered. I felt guilty for making her worry all the time. If there was only a way to escape this horrid place, I wouldn’t hesitate to.
“ Ma’am, there’s something I need to tell you,” Sasha said so seriously. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her this serious before.
“ Did something bad happen?” I inquired.
“ No, it’s not like that,” she brushed it off. “ It’s just something I should have told you about earlier,” she clarified.
“ Alright,” I nodded my head. What could she possibly want to tell me?
“ I don’t know how you feel about running away from this place but it’s about time we do that,” she spoke in hushed tones.
“ H-how did you know what’s on my mind? And how do you plan to do that?” I stuttered.
“ The truth is, you’re not an orphan as you think,” she heaved.
“ What do you mean?”
“ I mean exactly what I said,” she was rigid. “ Your dad is the Beta of another pack and we had only just recently confirmed that you are his daughter so we were sent to get you out,” she explained.
“ What do you mean I have another dad? And why do you keep saying ‘we’?”
“ You were kidn*pped as a child and somehow landed in the hands of the people who raised you,” she summarized. “ Well, that’s not the point. The point is, we have everything ready for today’s escape,” she whispered.
“ Who’s we?” I was still curious.
“ Come in,” she tapped her phone before whispering and one of the bodyguards stepped in. “ This is the other person working for your dad,” she introduced him.
“ I’m Leon,” he introduced himself.
“ I’m your dad’s personal assistant and we have a way out,” he was so straight to the point.
“ Can’t you stop being so uptight and rigid?” Sasha nagged him.
“ Sorry,” he apologized without a single readable emotion on his face.
“ See what I’m saying???” She pointed out again.
“ Anyway, we leave tonight, ma’am,” he was so diligent. I guess that’s why he’s my supposed dad’s personal assistant.
“ I’m sorry for telling you only now. You must feel betrayed,” Sasha always worried about the littlest things like how her actions or the actions of those around me would affect me.
“ I’m a little bit flustered but anywhere is better than here,” I didn’t care if they were telling the truth or not. I just wanted to get out of here.
“ Don’t discuss this too much. We need to be discreet,” Leon warned as he headed towards the door. “ Tonight we leave so get your rest,” he advised before leaving us alone.
“ Is he always this cold?” I wondered.
“ He’s just an oddball,” Sasha laughed awkwardly as she rubbed her neck.
I could barely get any sleep thinking of how free I’ll be once I’m outside the palace walls. Evening came rather quickly and I got my baby properly wrapped as I waited.
“ Ma’am? Are you awake?” Sasha poked her head into my room.
“ Yes,” I nodded my head before she entered the room. “ Would the guards actually let you play around like this?” I worried for her this time.
“ Fortunately for us, there are none around,” she beamed. “ So let’s go,” she pushed and I simply had to go with what she asked for .
“ Where’s Leon by the way?” I actually remembered his name.
“ We’ll meet him soon. He’s waiting for us,” she said and I got dressed, picked up my baby and followed her. Sasha led me to an abandoned, empty hallway before stopping by.
“ Why are we here?” I whispered.
“ Shh. I’ll explain once we’re in,” she hushed me before finding a secret passage way.
My heart beat faster as we got into the secret passage way. As we walked for some time, I realized how much I didn’t know about the palace. I was as good as a stranger here. Though I was somewhat afraid of getting caught, the thought of freedom and finding a better home comforted me. It was worth the risk.
Getting to the courtyard of the palace, we snuck through a c***k in the wall surrounding the palace. To think the c***k was big enough for us to easily slip through and the Zarek hadn’t done anything yet was oddly suspicious. We met with Leon outside the palace walls and we begun to run far from the palace. We couldn’t use a car close to the palace since it would attract attention so our only option was to keep running till we’re far enough from the palace.
“ We’ve been running for ages,” I complained as I begun to lose strength.
“ We’re not even close to being far from the palace, ma’am,” Sasha said.
“ I might actually faint if we have to move that far,” I groaned.
“ I never planned that we would to begin with,” Leon took his phone out of his pocket and tapped it. What was he doing?
“ What!?” I and Sasha chorused.
“ So what are we doing then?”
“ There’s a shortcut to the main road if we head through the forest. I’ve already positioned a driver to wait for us on the other side,” he explained.
“ You could have said this sooner, you know?” Sasha grumbled.
Just then, the blinding headlights of a car approached us from behind.
“ Freya!” Zarek’s voice sent a chill down my spine. I handed my baby over to Sasha and urged them to hide in the forest since I didn’t think he had noticed them.
He got down from the car and walked up to me. I couldn’t bring myself to say anything to him.
“ Where do you think you’re going?” He grabbed me by the neck.
“ Let go of me,” I struggled.
“ I shouldn’t have underestimated you,” he scoffed.
“ You don’t even love me so why won’t you let me leave?” I managed to say even though he kept choking me. “ You could just claim that I died and everything will go back to normal,” I bargained with him.
I genuinely hoped he’d let me go because Leon was ready to shot him at any moment. One slip up and he’ll be gone. I wasn’t bothered that he’d die but that his death would now be all the more reason people would think I killed his dad.
“ You’re right. What am I even thinking?” His grip around my neck loosened. “ I, Zarek Rhykard, reject you.”
I felt our mate bond sever as he finally let go of me. I fell to the ground, the rejection was a little too hard to endure.
“ I never want to see your face again,” he made himself clear before walking back to his car and zooming off. How has he known that I had escaped? There were a lot of questions I wanted to ask but I couldn’t, not with how dizzy I was.
“ Freya!” I heard Sasha scream as she ran up to me.
Overwhelmed by the sting that came with rejection, I collapsed to the ground, everything fading to black.
