April sat at her desk, her fingers drumming nervously against the wood. The idea of returning home to Richard after everything that had happened made her stomach twist. How could she face him? The memory of him handing her the check, as if their intimate moment could be reduced to a transaction, filled her with disgust. Her phone buzzed on the table. It was Gina. Gina: Hey, girl! Up for a movie night? It’s been forever since we hung out. April’s lips curled into a weak smile. Gina’s timing couldn’t have been better. Spending the evening with her best friend was the perfect way to avoid the awkward confrontation waiting for her at home. April: Absolutely. Meet me after work? She hesitated for a moment before typing a quick message to Richard. ‘I won’t be home tonight. Don’t wait up.’
