CHAPTER FOUR- SHADOWS OF PROPHECY

1168 Words
Aria; Mist curled around the trees, twisting along the trunks like restless ghosts. My boots sank into damp leaves as I moved silently, senses straining. Whispers from the shadows had followed me into the morning..soft, carried by the wind, yet unmistakable. “The bond… the bond must awaken…” I froze, my muscles tight. Something restless pressed beneath my skin, claws scraping at my ribs, pulling at my thought. Hunger, heat, longing, everything sharpened by the memory of Darius. Focus. Patrol. Training. Anything but him. Shadows shifted in the mist. For a heartbeat, silver eyes glinted at the clearing’s edge. My pulse stuttered. Low in my chest, something growled. Not him. Not yet. A branch snapped behind me. I spun, dagger raised, muscles coiled. The whispers cut sharper this time. “The one..the mate..danger comes with choice.” Not a voice. Not exactly. A vibration, threading through my skull, down my spine. I’d dreamed of this warning before, but now it felt alive. Real. “Aria?” Lysandra’s voice floated through the mist, soft, hesitant. “You’re quiet today.” I forced a smile. “Just thinking.” My chest burned at the lie. Her amber eyes, sharp and steady, searched me. “About him, isn’t it?” I froze. Heat twisted inside me, shame and longing tangled in knots. “No,” I said quickly. “It’s… nothing.” She didn’t press, but I knew she understood. My anchor. My best friend. Even her calm couldn’t pull me from Darius’ pull. I swallowed hard, feeling the ache curl in my chest like fire coiling around my ribs. I stepped forward, every leaf crunching beneath my boots loud in my ears. The mist wrapped around me, cool and damp, but it could not chill the fire Darius had left behind in my veins. My wolf snarled softly, a low rumble in my chest, restless, wanting. Darius; Mist clung to the trees, my senses sharp, as I moved through the forest. Every flicker of movement betrayed her before she even reached the clearing. Aria Blackthorn. Daughter of my enemy. Yet the one my instincts had claimed, the one I could not deny. Kael trailed silently. “You’re restless,” he said, calm but heavy with warning. “I’m not,” I growled, chest tight, claws of heat digging in. “She’s here. I feel her fire burning.” Kael frowned but stayed silent. My instincts coiled like a storm, screaming to cross the distance, stake my claim, leave no doubt. But I couldn’t. Not yet. She wasn’t ready. Force her, and it would all break. I lingered at the edge of the clearing, invisible, watching her precise, fluid movements. Every breath, every glance betrayed tension. Desire screamed inside me, claws tearing at my restraint. Mine. I smelled her, faint but intoxicating, carried on the damp morning air. Every step she took made my muscles twitch, my heart hammer. My wolf growled low, pacing inside me, craving what it could not yet take. Patience. Painful, agonizing patience. Aria; The clearing opened ahead, shafts of sunlight slicing through the mist, I paused, chest heaving, trying to quiet the thunder inside me. “The bond…the mate… the choice…” The whisper returned, soft, almost like a caress. My chest tightened, claws raking at my insides, desperate. Hands pressed to my head, trying to slow the panic clawing up my throat. I could not..would not..let him consume me. And then, silver eyes. Glinting between the trees at the mist’s edge. Pulse spiked. Every nerve screamed to flee, but desire dragged me forward, “Aria.” His voice, soft, low, a song I shouldn’t want. I froze, breath caught. “Darius…” The mist shifted, hiding him, teasing. My instincts roared, desperate. Mate. Mate. I tried to step back, to remind myself: enemy. Father’s rival. Killer of lands, of peace. And yet, inhaling, I smelled nothing but him. Wild, intoxicating, dangerous. Darius; She moved, unaware of my gaze She was mine. Every inch, every heartbeat. Yet she resisted. I should have stepped forward, demanded obedience, marked her. But I didn’t. Not yet. She had to come willingly, or the bond would shatter. Kael’s hand brushed my shoulder. “You’re going to break.” “I already am,” I whispered, eyes locked on her form. Every pulse, every flinch, every subtle movement called to me, and I ached to answer. I lingered just out of sight, muscles coiled, eyes never leaving her. Every shift of her weight, every subtle inhale, was a command I couldn’t obey. I wanted her, all of her, and yet I restrained, letting her choose. Letting her feel the pull. I waited. She had to choose or we would burn together. Aria; A rustle to my left. I spun, my dagger raised A tall, cloaked figure emerged from the mist. Face hidden. The forest whispered around them, vibrations prickling my skin. “The one who sees the bond comes.” My pulse slammed. The prophecy wasn’t whispering anymore. It had manifested. Something here. Something that knew. Something that could tip the balance. With my wolf panicking, I stepped back, legs shaking. The figure froze and Silence filled the air. Whispers sharpened into warning. A low, familiar growl split the mist. Darius stepped forward, eyes flashing silver, muscles coiled like a predator. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said, voice low, dangerous, fixed on the stranger. The figure tilted its head. “The bond calls,” it said, soft yet edged with authority. “It will be tested.” Confusion and fury twisted me. With my mouth and wolf screaming inside. Darius’ eyes found mine, blazing, unreadable. Every fiber of him screamed to protect, to claim, to destroy. Yet he didn’t move. The stranger stepped closer, mist swirling with a chill that sank into my bones. Air smelled of power, magic, danger. “Aria Blackthorn,” the voice cut through, smooth, commanding. “The prophecy awakens. Do not resist what is coming.” I tried to speak. Nothing came. Darius’ hands flexed, eyes locked on the stranger, holding back a storm. Father would have torn this figure apart but Darius restrained, focused on me. Time stretched. Wind whispered. Hearts pounded. Finally, the voice sliced the tension. “The bond cannot hide. The Alpha and his enemy’s daughter are bound, whether you choose it or not.” Darius growled low. My wolf roared back inside me, desperate, claiming, aching. Nothing would ever be the same. The stranger vanished into the mist, leaving the forest alive, watching, waiting. Darius turned to me, eyes burning with heat. Every instinct screamed for me to run and stay. I couldn’t move. Every muscle ached to give in. “Aria,” he whispered, rough, low, impossible. “You belong to me..but the world isn’t ready.” I met his gaze, pulse thrumming. The forest held its breath. Then the ground trembled beneath my feet, a subtle warning. Instinct screamed: the bond, the prophecy, Darius..would not wait!
