Shadows of Yesterday
Chapter One
As they often say, life is a tapestry woven with challenges, especially when you find yourself without the comforting embrace of support.
The soft light of dawn seeped into the small, cluttered apartment, casting a warm golden hue over the worn furniture and the modest kitchen where Lexus prepared breakfast. Lexus recoiled from the glare of the laptop screen as it illuminated a world filled with possibilities.
A weekend for most was a chance for leisure and fun, but for her, it had become a reminder of her struggles. Sitting on the humble beige sofa of their small apartment, which bore witness to the chaos of their lives, she sighed deeply.
At her current café job, earning ten dollars an hour barely enough to cover rent, never mind the ever-growing bills and much less on her little brother Paul’s fees. She sometimes felt like a tireless soldier in a battle with no end in sight but thankfully she also had Hayden, her twin brother to help her.
She watched as the cursor blinked on her laptop, a silent invitation to explore job listings, but her thoughts drifted instead to her little brother Paul, who would soon shuffle into the kitchen, his infectious energy a reminder of the joy she sought to bring into their lives. She could hear Hayden awake and on a call with someone. He was also job hunting like me.
Paul, her eight-year-old sunshine, was still tucked away in their shared bedroom, and she relished the thought of treating him to a hearty breakfast. Placing the laptop aside, she got to work. Eggs scrambled in a pan, toast crisped to a golden finish, and tea brewed with a touch of love.
“Good morning, sister!” Paul’s cheerful voice rang out as he unceremoniously entered the kitchen, his hair a wild mess from sleep. “Good morning, my little prince,” Lexus replied, a smile softening her worry. She leaned down to kiss his cheek, feeling the warmth radiate from his skin. “Is breakfast ready?” he asked, his round eyes sparkling with anticipation.
“Almost! Go wash your hands first!” She watched him bound away, his little feet pattering down the hallway. She felt her heart lighten as she returned to her cooking, the aroma of eggs and toast beginning to fill the small space.
Once breakfast was ready, she called him back to the table. Paul arrived promptly, tumbling into his chair. “Can we eat, please?” he implored, the words tumbling out with innocent desperation.
Lexus laughed, unable to resist his charm.
“Of course! But first, we say our prayers,” Lexus insisted, and they both bowed their heads. “Thank you for our food, and for always being there for each other.”
With the prayer said, they began to eat. Paul dove into his food, an ecstatic grin plastered across his face. Watching him, Lexus felt a swell of pride; He was such a well-behaved boy, wise beyond his years. But as the taste of breakfast lingered in her mouth, a pang of nostalgia gripped her.
She forced her mind away from thoughts of their parents—those shadows that lingered at the edges of her happiness. It was real life: full of laughter and love, yet tainted with absence.
“Are you okay, Angel sister?” Paul asked suddenly, his voice piercing through her reverie.
“Yes, I’m fine, my little prince,” she replied, her tone brightening, grateful for the title he had given her. “Just finishing up breakfast!”
“Can I have a bubble bath afterwards?” His eyes sparkled with hope. “Absolutely!” She chuckled indulgently. “But first, let’s finish breakfast.”
The meal wrapped up with laughter and light conversation. After cleaning the dishes, she set aside Hayden’s food and guided Paul into a joyful bubble bath, the splashes of water and his infectious giggles filling the apartment. For a moment, everything felt perfect.
After his bath, she encouraged him to get started on his homework while she retrieved her laptop from its resting place on the sofa. Paul obediently picked up his backpack, and she felt a twinge of happiness as she watched him. He was a diligent boy, always trying his best in school, knowing how much that education meant to their future.
Just as she settled back on the sofa with her laptop, ready to tackle her job search once more, the boys' bedroom door creaked open, and Lexus looked up to see Hayden, her twin brother, bursting into the room. “Guess what, Lexus?” he shouted, barely able to contain himself.
“What? Did you win the lottery?” she teased, fully aware that such luck rarely graced their lives.
“Better!” His enthusiasm was infectious. “Remember that interview I went for at Xencorp? I got the job!”
“Seriously?” The colour drained from her face as exhilaration and disbelief washed over her.
“Yes! I’m going to be the PA to the CEO, Xavier Black!”
The name rolled off his tongue with an air of admiration. Xavier Black was known for his innovative vision and imposing presence in the business world— a mystery in many ways as his appearances were few and far between.
“Did you really? What did they say?” She felt a surge of excitement, her worries momentarily forgotten.
“They called while you were cooking. I start on Monday!” Hayden beamed, and they both jumped into a dance of anticipation. Paul, his homework momentarily forgotten, joined in, mirroring their excitement.
Lexus’s heart swelled with pride for her brother. This was the opportunity they had been waiting for, and she couldn’t help but feel that maybe, just maybe, things were finally looking up for them.
“Can we go celebrate?” Lexus suggested, her heart racing with elation. “Amusement park, Hayden’s treat!”
“Definitely!” Paul squealed, unable to contain himself. “I want to ride the Ferris wheel.
As they celebrated the joyous news, Lexus couldn't shake the feeling that change was in the air—new beginnings awaited, not just for Hayden, but possibly for herself as well. Little did they know, that their intertwined fates would soon lead to unexpected challenges and thrilling adventures?
