I’d been a bit of an i***t for thinking that Aira was even capable of what the gossip had suggested. Judging by the looks I’d gotten from Aira here and there, she was in complete agreement. Occasionally, I’d catch her gazing at me in a piercing way, no doubt when memories of how I’d treated her crept into her mind.
I didn’t blame her. It was a horrible thing to imagine and an even worse thing to have believed. It had ripped through to my very soul.
But now, knowing that it had all been a lie, that the child growing inside her was mine—my heart was finally at peace.
