The night my ectopic pregnancy ruptured and I started hemorrhaging, my life hung by a thread. I waited for Dorian Fenwick to come sign the surgery consent.
On the third call, he finally answered.
It was noisy on his end. Kendra Lockley was crying. "Dorian, I'm scared. Don't leave me."
Dorian lowered his voice to soothe her. "I'm not going anywhere."
The nurse took the phone and spoke quickly. "Dr. Fenwick, Carys Whitcombe needs emergency surgery right now. Please come to the ER operating room immediately."
The line went silent for a second.
Then Dorian lowered his voice. "Kendra needs surgery too. She's been afraid of pain since she was a kid, and she needs someone with her. Carys's always been healthy. She can wait a little longer."
I stared at the harsh white lights outside the operating room and remembered three years ago, when he'd handed me our marriage certificate and said, "Carys, from now on, I'm your family."
It wasn't until later that I learned the truth.
The document had been fake from the start.
He wasn't my husband.
And he'd never had the right to call himself my family.
