Chapter 2

The next time Mikael gain consciousness he knew he is in a hospital. The smell of disinfectant is evident.

His head is a mush. His body feels heavy and aching all over. He tried to open his eyes but even they are heavy. His throat is so dry and his mouth feels like stuffed full of cotton.

What happened last night?

At first he was confuse. He remembers being on the job last night. Then he follows the suspect on selling the drugs. And there’s red eyes and fangs.

Fangs. Is he bitten?

On that thought he became fully awake. He instinctively touched his neck and he groan from pain because of his sudden movement.

But the ache is nothing to the realization that he got bitten by a vampire. He stroke his bandaged neck. There’s a throbbing in the part between his neck and shoulder. He can’t believe he let a vile creature like that get near him and to top it all, be bitten.

He look at his surrounding. The room is dark and the only source of light is a dimmed lamp at the top of a table in the corner in his left. He tried to sit up and groan from ache that came up. There’s also prickling in his right arm. He look at it and just noticed the dextrose that is connected to a bag full of red liquid.

His first reaction is panic. Is that blood? Did he already turned into a vampire that he need blood now?

He hurriedly snatched the dextrose where it is connected to his arm. The blood started to flow from it.

He need to get out of here. He move to the side of the bed and swing his feet until it is touching the floor.

He shivers from the coldness of the floor. By the support of the bed railing he tried to stand up. He wobble and sit again. His feet are numb. Mikael curse.

How long is he laying in the bed that it made his feet numb?

He inhale and exhale deeply. He tried again and this time he was able to stand up. He took a step. Then two. He was in the other side of the room near the door when he was hit by sudden nausea. His vision started to blur.

Mikael drop to the floor and the thing he last remember is someone shouting and something pricking his left upper arm. Then he was fully engulfed by darkness.

Mikael wake up again but this time to a bright room. He tried to shield his eyes from brightness but he can’t move both of his arm. They are tied in the bed and so his body.

“That is the consequences of the trouble you made earlier,” someone on his right said.

He look at the person who speaks and groan. Daniel McGregor, his team leader, is currently sitting in a wooden chair beside the window and reading a file. Probably the report about what happened to him.

Daniel look and pointed the file at him. “Do you know what this is?”

He didn’t answer. He already what it is.

“It is the report of a cop that is supposed to just be in disguise to gather information but found in an alley bleeding. To top it all, he was bitten by a vampire. Do you what it means?” Daniel continued. His tone is even but every words is carrying his anger.

Mikael felt ashamed. He didn’t follow his boss’ orders. But he only did it for the case. He clenched his fists and look at Daniel. “I just can’t let that person get away. I just did what I did for the case. We don’t know if there’s another victim that night. I just can’t let that happen!”

He let those words in hoarse voice. His throat is so dry that speaking is like a punishment.

“And then what happen? This! Did you help those victims? You want protect them? You even can’t protect yourself from a vampire!”

There’s a long silent after those words are spoken. Did Daniel just say those words? He is one of few people who know his past and what is the impact of those words to him.

As if Daniel realized what he just said, the anger in his face change to regret.

“I know how you feel but you can’t always play hero all the time. We are a team. You’re not new to this job. It’s fortunate that Mark noticed you are gone too long without communicating last night, look for you and found you bleeding. I let all you’re previous stupidity pass but I can’t let this situation be forgiven.”

Mikael know that Daniel is serious every time he use his last name.

Daniel stand up and went for the door. Before he open the door he speak again, “I’ll let the doctor tell you the consequences of you’re stupidity. I hope it’s not too late for you.”

Few minutes after Daniel exit the room a doctor enters.

The doctor stopped upon seeing his tied state. He shake his head and tried not to laugh.

“Sorry about, um, about you’re current situation,” the doctor said, “We only need to make sure you will not be harm more.”

Mikael just groan as a reply.

His body is not numb as the first time he wake up. The straps are more uncomfortable than the aches he is feeling right now. He also feels embarrassment that anyone can saw his current state. Being tied down and helpless.

He hate being helpless the most.

The doctor took pity and called a nurse to help him get rid of the straps. After Mikael was freed from them he was also given a glass of water that he instantly gulp down. At least his throat feels better.

“Now, Agent Gray. We need to talk. Do you know what happened to you?” the doctor asked.

Mikael nod. Even he want to deny what happened, he should accept the reality. Maybe what Daniel is true. Maybe what he did is stupid. And stupid action have bad consequences.

“I was bitten. By a vampire,” he added the last statement whispery.

“Not just by an ordinary vampire. A rouge vampire it seems.”

With that, Mikael really believe that the universe hate him.

A rouge vampire? Being bitten by a vampire is bad enough but bitten by a rouge one. This is bad news. Really, really bad news.

It was discovered that being bitten by a vampire can turn you into a vampire if the one who bite you chooses to. But it is a rare case. Turning a human to a vampire was forbidden a long time ago to maintain the balance between human and vampires.

Still, there are cases where vampires still hunt humans to dry them of their blood like what they assume is their current case.

Rouge vampires is another issue. Upon discovering the vampire species, humans tried to use them as weapons. They captured some vampires and experimented on them to use their abilities to create a drug to give human abilities like that of vampires.

Those humans that given the drug became stable and started to attack anyone. Their sanity and humanity became nonexistence and whoever get bitten by them turned into rouge vampires themselves.

There are eradicated but the damage is already done. Humans fear vampires and started to hunt and kill them. That spark the war between vampires and humans hundred years ago.

After the war both vampires and humans entered into a treaty and that treaty includes forbidding of turning any human into a vampire.

Mikael feels like his world is crashing down. Is this really happening right now? Why?

“You lost so much blood that we need to transfuse you some,” the doctor continued.

Mike remembers what happened when he first gain consciousness. Blood is being transfused to him and not being feed because he already turned into a vampire.

A thought came into Mikael. “Am I still human? I undergone blood transfusion, so that means I’m not infected right?” he said hopefully.

The doctor shakes his head. ”No, the infection is already taking effect but the blood lose will kill you first if we didn’t transfer blood into you. It also slow down the infection.”

Mikael’s shoulder slump and his head drop onto his hands. He wants to cry but no tears came. He overcome a lot of hardships in life but how can you overcome death? The only choice he have is to die before he fully turned into a rouge vampire that can cause harm to others. Is this really his end?

He is ready to give up and accept his fate when the doctor speaks again.

“There’s still solution for you not turning to a rouge vampire.”

Mikael lift his head and look at the doctor confusedly.

“How do you feel about turning into a vampire?”
