Chapter 1: Beneath the Oak Tree
The cicadas screamed as the sun bled its final light over the bayou, casting long shadows across the Moreau estate. Spanish moss hung like ghosts from the towering oak trees, swaying in the heavy Louisiana air. Arianne Moreau stood barefoot in the garden behind the mansion, her silk dress clinging to her body like a second skin, soaked in the humidity of the evening. She was supposed to be inside, toasting to her father’s political victory. Instead, she waited beneath the ancient oak that had once been her childhood sanctuary. And he came, as he always did. Kellan Reyes moved like shadow—graceful, silent, dangerous. His dark curls were damp from the heat, his shirt half-unbuttoned, revealing the inked script that ran down his chest. The tattoo was a quote she’d once whispered to him in secret: "What is done in love is done well." He carried the edge of the streets with him, and yet there was softness in his eyes when they met hers. “You look like you’re ready to run,” he said, stepping closer. Ari’s lips curled. “Maybe I am.” “Tell me where, and I’ll drive.” She looked away. “You know I can’t.” “I know you won’t.” His voice was low, laced with frustration—but not anger. Never anger. Not with her. Their silence was filled with old memories. As kids, they had built forts in this garden, sworn loyalty under this tree, healed scraped knees and broken hearts. But somewhere along the line, loyalty turned into longing. Every look held weight. Every brush of skin, a question. “I saw your mother tonight,” she said finally, pulling a leaf from the oak’s bark. “She barely looked at me.” “She’s tired of watching me chase a ghost.” Ari’s eyes narrowed. “Is that what I am to you? A ghost?” “No.” Kellan’s voice dropped to a whisper. “You’re fire. And I’ve been burning for years.” The ache between them was palpable, a slow build of unspoken desires and denied truths. The wind shifted, carrying the scent of magnolia and bourbon from the party beyond. Somewhere inside, her father was laughing with men who wanted to own her future. She turned back to Kellan, eyes shining. “Lucien’s planning to announce my engagement tonight.” Kellan’s jaw clenched. “To who?” “Damon Virelli.” His fists curled. “The same Damon who launders money through half the city’s charities? The one whose goons put my friend in the hospital last month?” She nodded. “He’s untouchable. And Daddy thinks marrying me off to him is how we secure the next election.” “I won’t let that happen.” “You don’t get a say.” Her voice cracked. Kellan stepped closer, invading her space, brushing a hand down her arm. She shivered—not from cold, but from him. Always him. “I love you, Ari.” She froze. The words hovered, raw and real. Her heart thudded like thunder in her chest. “I’ve loved you since we were sixteen,” he said, his voice trembling. “And I know what we’re up against. Your father. My past. The way the world sees us. But if you tell me to fight, I’ll set this whole damn city on fire.” She looked at him then, truly looked. At the man who had always been her shelter, her storm, her truth. Her fingers curled into his shirt, pulling him closer. “Then burn it down,” she whispered. Their mouths collided—desperate, wild, hungry. Years of repression ignited in a single kiss. His hands gripped her waist, hers tangled in his hair, the world around them falling away. She pressed against him, moaning softly as his lips trailed down her neck, tasting the skin that had always been forbidden. But the moment shattered with the c***k of a branch. They tore apart, breathless. From the shadows, a figure emerged—one of Lucien’s security men, face pale, eyes wide. “You need to come now,” he said, voice shaking. “Your father… he knows.” And just like that, the fantasy fell apart. Ari backed away, smoothing her dress, her chest heaving. Kellan’s eyes darted toward the mansion. The man added, “He’s calling for Damon. He’s furious.” Kellan turned to Ari, jaw tight. “We have to leave. Now.” But Ari didn’t move. Because she knew—this was the beginning of war.
