Chapter 4:The Devil's Secret

639 Words
I barely slept that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the black mist... the shadow creatures... and Lucien standing in front of me. His last words echoed through my mind. "If you want to survive... don't fall in love with me." I had a lot of questions in my head. Who was he? And why was he risking his life to protect me? The next morning, the sky was gray, and rain fell softly over the town. When I arrived at school, Mia was already waiting for me at the front gate. "Luna!" she called, waving. "You disappeared yesterday. I was so worried." "I'm sorry," I muttered avoiding mia eyes, something came up. Mia narrowed her eyes. "You're hiding something." Before I could answer, the school bell rang. As we walked into the classroom, I looked toward Lucien's seat. It was empty. "He isn't here today," Mia whispered. "Strange... the new guy misses school on his second day." Something didn't feel right. Throughout the morning, I couldn't concentrate on what the teacher was saying. The words on the wall from yesterday kept returning to my thoughts. SHE BELONGS TO US NOW. When lunch break arrived, I made up my mind. I was going to find answers. Instead of heading to the cafeteria, I slipped into the old school library. It was the oldest building on campus, and hardly anyone visited it anymore. Dust covered the shelves, and the air smelled of old paper. An elderly librarian looked up from her desk. "Can I help you?" she asked. "I'm looking for old school records." She studied me for a moment before pointing toward a shelf at the back. "Everything before twenty years ago is kept there." I thanked her and hurried over. One by one, I pulled out old yearbooks. Most were faded with age. As I flipped through them, I froze. A photograph caught my attention. A class picture from... 1926. My hands trembled. Standing in the back row was a teenage boy wearing the same calm expression. The same dark hair. The same face. Lucien. He hadn't aged a single day. "This... this can't be possible." I quickly reached for another yearbook. There he was again with the same face and that strange smile. No wrinkles. It was impossible. A cold voice spoke behind me. I told you not to look for me. I turned sharply. Lucien stood at the end of the aisle. "How are you here?" I whispered. He glanced at the yearbooks in my hands. "You've seen too much." "You've been alive for a hundred years." He remained silent. Tell me the truth! For the first time, sadness appeared in his eyes. "I've been alive much longer than that." Before I could ask another question, every light in the library went out. Darkness covered the room. Books crashed from the shelves. A freezing wind swept through the library. Then a voice echoed from somewhere in the darkness. "You cannot hide her forever..." Lucien stepped in front of me. "Stay behind me." The shadows gathered between the bookshelves. Dozens of glowing eyes stared at us. Lucien's fists tightened. "They've entered the school." The creatures began moving closer. One by one. Lucien looked over his shoulder. His voice was calm, but urgent. No matter what happens... Don't let go of my hand. Without thinking, I reached for him. The moment our hands touched... The shadow creatures screamed. The windows shattered. The floor trembled. Lucien stared at our joined hands in complete shock. "Impossible..." he whispered. "What is it?" I asked. He looked into my eyes, his expression filled with fear. "They were right." "What do you mean?" He swallowed hard. "You aren't an ordinary human, Luna." The light around us grew even brighter. And somewhere deep within the school... Something ancient opened its eyes.
