Prologue – Betrayed by Blood
The scent of burning incense filled the dimly lit chamber, but it did nothing to mask the stench of betrayal. Yisa knelt before the grand throne, her wrists bound in thick silver chains that bit into her flesh. The once-pristine silk of her gown was torn and dirt-streaked, a stark contrast to the opulent surroundings of the royal court. She had been summoned like a criminal. Above her, her father—King Aldred, ruler of the kingdom of Eldoria—watched her with cold, unreadable eyes. The same man who had ignored her existence for years now held her fate in his hands. "You will wed the Wolf King," his voice rang out, final and merciless. Yisa's heart clenched, her fingers curling into fists. "No," she whispered, the word escaping her lips before she could stop it. A murmur spread through the court. Laughter, whispers. Disbelief. A forgotten daughter dared to defy the king? Her father did not flinch. "It is not a request, Yisa. It is the only reason you still draw breath." Her breath hitched. She should have seen this coming. She had always been nothing but an inconvenience, a stain on the royal line. Born to a mother with no noble blood, raised in the shadow of her half-siblings—the true heirs of Eldoria—she had spent her life unseen, unheard. But now, she was useful. Now, she was a pawn. "You offer me as a sacrifice," she said bitterly, her voice steadier than she felt. The king's lips curled into something that was not quite a smile. "A sacrifice implies loss. This is a trade. Your marriage will ensure peace between our kingdoms. The Wolf King will take you, and in return, he will not take our lands." A sharp, cruel laugh echoed through the chamber. Yisa turned her head slightly, her gaze locking onto the source of it—her elder half-sister, Lysandra, the beloved princess of Eldoria. "Do not flatter yourself, sister," Lysandra sneered. "You are no great prize. The wolves despise humans, and our people despise them in return. You are nothing but a means to an end." Yisa said nothing, but the weight of the moment settled deep in her bones. She was being sent to the wolves. To him. Kieran Varathor. The Wolf King. The monster who ruled the northern wildlands with an iron fist. A beast in both blood and nature, feared even by his own kind. They whispered that he had slaughtered his own father for the throne, that his wolves followed him out of terror rather than loyalty. A shiver ran through her, but Yisa refused to let them see her fear. She lifted her chin, meeting her father's gaze. "And if I refuse?" The king did not hesitate. "Then you will die here, in chains." Silence fell over the court. Yisa's pulse pounded in her ears. Her fate had been sealed the moment she had been born into this cursed bloodline. There was no escape. With a slow breath, she rose to her feet, the silver chains clinking softly. Her body ached, but her voice did not waver as she spoke: "Then I will wed him." But as she walked out of the royal court, flanked by guards, she made herself a vow. They thought they were sending her to be swallowed by the wolves. They had no idea she would rise as their queen.
