*LEAH* The following day, I got out of bed very early and went home to meet Gerald for the money. My former home rather. I would have to get used to this place not being my home anymore. Today, I woke up feeling refreshed and… new? Maybe this is what getting married does to you. While in the cab, I was staring at my surroundings while also enjoying the cool breeze on my face. Then my phone rang. It was mum’s doctor. “Good morning, Doctor Ray.” “Good morning, Leah. Hope you’re doing well today. I called concerning the money for the surgery…” Before he finished, I happily interrupted, “Yes, doc. I’ll be making the payments today. In fact, I’m on my way to get the money.” “That’s great!” he exclaimed. I could tell that he was happy to hear that I had finally gotten the money. We exchanged a few more words and hung up. I finally arrived at the house and alighted. I casually walked in and found Hannah sitting on the couch with my spoilt stepsister sitting next to her. When they noticed me, they rolled their eyes at me and hissed. “Why are you here?” Serena asked. “Shouldn’t you be in your wretched husband’s house, being a slave or something?” My face was immediately laced with anger but I regained my composure and ignored them. I won’t let her ruin this happy day for me. Hannah gazed at me with soft, sad eyes and her brows slightly furrowed, “Oh look at you, Leah. How was your night? Hope that wretched man wasn’t too rough… you know what I mean.” If anyone saw her face right now, they would believe that she genuinely cared. My face was a little puffy and it was obvious I didn’t sleep very well. Well you can’t blame me, I couldn’t wait for today to come. I guess I was too excited. “You look like you have been f****d real hard,” Serena laughed. “Slut!” “Shut up, Serena! You’re not even one to call a person a slut!” I fired back. I don’t know where the courage came from because on a normal day, I would just ignore her. But this felt good. “You shut up!” Serena shot back. She began to clap her hands and laughed sarcastically. “Where did the courage come from all of a sudden?” “She must think she has made it now after marrying a criminal,” Hannah said and they both laughed. “Vance might be hot and handsome, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s a criminal. A poor and wretched one even. Y’all suit each other.” Serena just wouldn’t stop blabbing and I was tired of it. I planned to come here, collect the money and leave immediately. Thankfully, Gerald walked into the room. “What are you doing here, Leah?” he asked coldly. Excuse you, this is my father’s house. Anyways I ignored and politely answered, “I need the money for mum’s surgery as you promised.” He then reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. Yes, I was also wondering why he brought out his wallet. I don’t think a hundred thousand dollars can fit in there. He pulled out a few notes and threw it at me. “There you go.” My forehead creased. Irritation filled me and when I looked at the notes on the floor I became even more confused. There were like ten pieces of a hundred dollar note. “Gerald, mum’s surgery is hundred thousand dollars, why are you giving me this?” I asked with a confused look. “That’s all I have, Leah. I need to change my car this week.” He needs to change his car this week??? The anger that surged through me was beyond measure. “We had a deal, Gerald. I have fulfilled my part of of the deal, so you should also do your part,” I said as calmly as possible. “What if I don’t? What are you going to do to me?” he asked nonchalantly. Have I been tricked? “Gerald, this is mum’s health we’re talking about.” As I spoke, I was finding it harder to remain calm. “Stop this prank and hand the money over to me.” Next thing, he turned around to walk away. Is this man kidding me? I immediately stretched my hand and yanked him back. “Gerald-“ I was extremely angry right now but I still didn’t get the chance to finish. “Are you insane?” He asked me, walking closer to me with his eyes narrowed in slits. “Are you stupid?” My heart was racing very fast. I can’t believe I put my future and happiness on the line just to get tricked at the end. “Get out!” He growled, venom dripping from his voice. How can I leave without the money? I was furious but I couldn't do anything. I felt so helpless. I felt tears brimming in my eyes. I blinked repeatedly and swallowed hard, trying to suppress my emotions. I slowly shook my head. “Why did I even trust you in the first place? You’re a very wicked person and I wish you were not my brother!” My face went numb for a second when his hard hand landed on my face again. Another slap. This was the second time he’d be slapping me in the space of three days. “Get out!” He growled again, pointing at the door. “You no longer have a home here, nor are you welcome here from now on. “Leave!” Tears rolled down my cheeks, but I quickly cleaned it off with my hands. I looked him dead in the eye, “I hate you! You will all regret treating me this way.” Even if I knew I wasn’t powerful enough to make them regret anything, I said it anyway. “You should take the money and crawl back to that pathetic excuse of a husband you’ve got. Maybe it’ll keep you both from starving for a little while,” Serena said and her mother chuckled. I glanced back at them and walked away. Oh how I hate these people. When I got outside, I burst into tears. I couldn’t control it to the extent that I was literally sobbing. Suddenly, my phone started ringing. It was Doctor Ray. “He- hello,” I coughed to clear my throat before speaking again. “Hello, Doctor Ray. I couldn’t get the money anymore, I’m sorry. I will make sure I-“ I began to explain myself. “Leah, Sarah just had a cardiac arrest and has been rushed to the ER. We need you here immediately!”
