Chapter 2
Lila’s POV
“So you dare to talk badly about me, my brothers? Even mention the Alpha? How dare you?” His voice booms, emphasizing each of his words.
“I’m sorry,” I stammer, my voice shaking. “I didn’t mean it. I was angry. I promise—”
Before I can finished my statement, a sharp slap lands on my cheek, sending me crashing to the ground. My lips throb, and when I touch them, my fingers were flooding with blood. I look up, and my vision is blurry, meeting his cold stares.
“What’s going on?” Lucien steps outside, his brows furrowed in confusion.
River points at me, his voice dripping with anger. “Can you believe this fool? She called us spoiled brats, said she regrets ever knowing us, and even dragged Father into it! She said it’s all his fault for raising us this way.”
Cade’s gaze pierces through me. “Is that so?” he snarls.
“I— it was a mistake…” I barely manage to get those words out before Cade hands wrap around my neck, lifting me effortlessly off the ground.
“Enough!” Lucien’s voice cuts through, but Cade doesn’t let go. His grip tightens, and I feel my skin burn, my face flushing from lack of air. Just as I’m certain I’ll black out, he drops me.
I hit the ground, gasping and coughing. Fire spreads through my chest, but I force myself to stand. I dust off my clothes, my vision still blurry.
“What have I done to deserve this,” I muttered under my breath tears streaming down my eyes. My anger simmering beneath my tears.
I raised my gaze meeting the pears of 10 eyes staring at me with expressionless. I tried to call the rage bumbling in me but it was just to hard to keep quiet.
“You,” I hiss, my gaze locking on River, my finger pointed to him. “You think you’re untouchable. You think the world revolves around you, but guess what? You’re nothing but a mistake, a pathetic excuse for a man.”
His eyes widen, shock flickering across his face.
“And you,” I turn to Cade, my voice cold enough to shock them. “You’re cruel, heartless, and utterly devoid of humanity. You don’t deserve happiness, and I hope you never find it.”
“You think you’re in charge, don’t you? That you can treat people like dirt and get away with it. But let me tell you something—you’re nothing.” I lash at Lucien and then turn to Kai.
“You were supposed to protect me. I thought you were different, but you’re just like them. Maybe worse, because you had a choice, and you chose to watch me suffer.”
Each word feels like a slap, and I see the flicker of discomfort in their eyes. But it’s too late for regret.
I turn to Cassie. “And you. Just because you’re dating the future Alpha doesn’t mean the world belongs to you. You’re nothing but a pathetic plaything to him.”
When I finish, my chest heaves with fury. I know they’ll retaliate, but I don’t care. Anything is better than enduring this humiliation every day.
“Lock her up!” River's voice was sharp as he turned to guard standing closer.
A guard appears at his command, dragging me away. My screams fall on deaf ears. They throw me into the cold, dark dungeon and slam the door shut.
As I heard the creak of the door closing, regret hit me like a tidal wave. Darkness surrounds me, and the fear I’ve always suppressed takes hold. I scream for help, my voice echoing in the void. “Please! Somebody!”
Through the bars, I catch Kai and Lucien staring at me. For a fleeting moment, I think I see remorse in their eyes, but it quickly hardens into indifference. They leave without a word.
I collapse to the floor, trembling. The darkness was too much, for me, I hate staying in the darkness.
I tried to stay stiff but I eventually slipped into the floor and all that followed next was dim darkness.
When I wake, I find myself in the hospital bed. Nessa sits beside me, her face pale with worry.
“Where am I?” I croak, my throat dry and raw.
“You’re safe now,” she says softly. “You’re in the hospital. Calm down, Lila.”
Relief washed over me when I saw my one and only friend sitting beside me, Nessa was the only friend I could say I had through my breathing stage. She’s the only one who will always stand by me and give me hope that everything will soon have a better part.
She stared at me in a way that I didn’t understand, her gaze raking my body but I didn’t bother to ask instead I tried to sit down on the bed which she assisted me with.
“Easy,” she pronounced finally setting me down, like the time was waiting for me to sit, the memories before I collapsed floated back to my memories and tears stained my lashes.
“Why the tears?” Nessa wiped the tears with her finger, and her palm collided with my shoulder giving it a gentle pet.
“I can’t keep living like this,” I whisper, more tears streaming down my face. “I can’t even breathe. I’m tired, Nessa. I’m so tired.”
She pulls me into a hug. “Maybe you should report them,” she suggests hesitantly.
I laugh bitterly. “Report them? To who? Their father? He’s the Alpha. He’d never go against them. Reporting them would only make things worse.”
“Then what will you do?” she asks, her voice trembling.
“I’ll run away,” I say firmly.
Her eyes widen. “Run away? Did you know if you accidentally get caught you’ll become a rogue? Lila. Is that really what you want?”
“It’s better than this,” I snap. “The half-moon party is in a few days. Everyone will be distracted, and I’ll make my escape then.”
She looks unconvinced but doesn’t argue.
“Thanks for bringing me here anyway,” I say softly, my voice cracking.
Nessa shakes her head. “I didn’t. Someone else did, but I don’t know who.”
Her words leave me speechless. Who would help me? And why?
