Chapter 8 Planting a New Future A change was coming to our farm. Papa had been gathering information about switching our crops to corn and wheat while we were in Richmond. He really had been thinking about what we grew. Our last season of tobacco had been harvested, rolled, and sent to market. Now the fields, fresh ones not stripped of nutrients, were in preparation for corn seeds. Heaps of manure covered the ground ready for shovels. I was not part of the field work this time around for I was to keep busy with my studies, sowing my own type of seed. My nose hovered above images in a book, trying to distinguish the differences between the types of columns. Mr. Larkin was explaining the finer points of Greek buildings. I attempted to imagine Athens and its citizens who roamed the streets
