Chapter 1 The Father Shows Up
The tall, cold man stood in the doorway. He had thick black hair, and his amber eyes were like a deep pool. "Your name is Selena?" he asked. "...Yes." "Do you have a red butterfly birthmark on your right breast?" Selena froze. Anger flickered in her eyes. For someone she was meeting for the first time, that was a bit out of line. If he was just a creep, his expression was far too cold for it. His voice didn't carry a trace of feeling either. He didn't sound like a p*****t. He sounded like an interrogator. But how did this man know about the birthmark on her right breast? As if he could tell she was too embarrassed to answer, the man fell silent for a moment, his eyes fixed on her, and asked again. "Five years ago, at the Dynasty Hotel, did you walk into the wrong room?" Selena's heart jolted. Her head snapped up. She was in complete shock. Of course she remembered that night five years ago, the one that changed her life. If it hadn't happened, she wouldn't have gotten pregnant, and she wouldn't have a child. "How do you know about that ?" The man pressed his lips together. "Because it was me that night." Selena's eyes went wide. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. Five years ago, back when she was still in college, she'd left a friend's birthday party and gone back to her hotel. She walked into the wrong room and climbed into the wrong bed. She was drunk and thought she was hallucinating. There was a huge black dog lying on the big bed. Selena had loved cats and dogs since she was little, but she'd always lived under other people's roofs and never been allowed to keep one. Back then she was fearless. She crawled onto the bed and started petting the dog, not even worried it might bite. Then, somehow, the dog was gone, and there was an extremely good-looking man in the bed. She figured she'd been single for too long and was having a s*x dream, so she went along with it completely. Before dawn the next day, she was jolted awake by her phone ringing nonstop. Still half asleep, she picked up and heard that Grandma, the woman who had raised her for ten years, had passed away. She panicked, at a total loss, and the moment she got out of bed, she dropped to her knees on the floor. Only then did she realize she was naked. A man was lying in the bed, his back to her. It wasn't a dream. The s*x dream she'd thought she was having was real. But there was no time to think about that. She scrambled into her clothes, didn't even get a look at the man's face, and hurried out of the hotel, bearing the discomfort in her body. Selena had lost both her parents when she was little and had been passed from one relative's house to another. When she was ten, Grandma felt sorry for her and took her away from her aunt's home, where she was living at the time. Over the years, Grandma had been so good to her. She'd even spent her own savings to put Selena through college. Selena had planned to take care of Grandma once she found a job. She never imagined Grandma would die at seventy. Selena couldn't accept it. After all those years, she'd finally found someone who truly loved her, and now that person was gone too. Grief, pain, and despair pressed down on her like heavy storm clouds. She couldn't shake them off. Wherever she went, they followed. Beautiful scenery and delicious food couldn't chase away the cloud over her head. Nothing felt like it mattered anymore. And that was when she found out she was pregnant. "Your body isn't in great shape, and it's very hard for you to conceive. This baby might be the only one you ever have," the doctor said. So Selena took a leave of absence from school. Growing up, every time she moved in with a relative, she could never fit into the happy, close-knit warmth of their family. She stood at the edge and watched. Mom and Dad, brothers and sisters. She had none of those blood relatives, but one day she could have a child of her own. Nobody would ever know how badly she wanted a child of her own. She believed this baby was the best gift. It was redemption, something that gave her life meaning again. The baby was born with black hair and amber pupils. She named him Lucas. Grandma’s old house had been taken back by her children. She had nowhere to go. With a baby in her arms, she couldn’t even afford school anymore, so she rented a cheap RV and kept her head down, looking for work. She had a reason to keep living again. At the hardest point, she worked several jobs a day. At night she dug through supermarket dumpsters, and the discarded food was enough to keep her fed. She couldn’t afford a nanny, and she couldn’t stop working either. When she strapped Lucas to her back to work and heard him giggling behind her, she felt happy. In this world, few people loved her, and many disliked her. The happiness that came from blood couldn’t be bought back with any amount of money. There was a hole there that would never be filled. She never in a million years expected that man, more mysterious than a ghost, to show up at her door. At that moment, the man looked at the run-down RV and its rusted walls, his brow creasing in a barely visible frown. “You’ve been living in a place like this with the child all these years?” Selena answered quietly, “Yes.” But she’d actually been planning to move. The new home she’d bought was ready to live in now. “I’m Connor.” His voice was low and gave nothing away. “I’m here to take you and your son somewhere else to live.” He was only speaking normally, yet his eyes were sharp and tilted upward, and his amber pupils were ice-cold, without any warmth. They weren’t like human eyes at all. Selena found the feeling familiar, because her son sometimes looked exactly like this. His big amber eyes were striking, but they were cold at the same time, like the eyes of some kind of predator, the kind that made your skin crawl. She thought of a wolf. In her twenty-five years, she’d met a lot of people and looked a lot of them straight in the eye on purpose. Only this man and her son had ever given her this feeling. It wasn’t her imagination. “How did you find this place?” She stared at Connor. Maybe she’d looked at her son’s eyes so much that she wasn’t afraid of this man’s. Back then, thinking it was a dream, she’d gone along with it at first, but then she couldn’t take it and wanted to get away. She’d even thought she’d be the first person to die in the middle of a s*x dream. Connor was silent for two seconds. Then he said coldly, “I'm his father.” In truth, that night was his heat, which came once a year. That time, it had unexpectedly come three days early. He’d found a hotel nearby and waited for his clan to rescue him.And then a human woman had barged in and pawed and hugged him all over. She didn’t spare his ears, his tail, or any other part of him. She’d touched almost every inch of his body... Because his grandfather was human, Connor carried a small amount of human blood. It wasn’t as spooky as being some kind of monster. This world had never belonged to humans alone. Humans were just arrogant enough to assume theirs was the only race. The werewolf clan had always lived on the farthest, coldest snowy mountain. Then, in recent years, humans built cities, and his grandmother was drawn to them. She came down the mountain and met his grandfather, who was human. Back then, by the time he came to, his clan had already taken him up the mountain. The heat lasted five days. All he had to do was soak in the cold pool unique to the snowy mountain for two days, and it would be taken care of. Werewolves had only one mate in a lifetime. They weren’t like humans and other races, so fickle. Until they met that one person, they’d rather soak in the cold pool year after year than find just anyone to take care of it. It was laughable that in recent years humans had started pursuing monogamy too. He’d clearly seen how they said one thing to your face and did another behind your back. They ate from their own bowl while eyeing the pot. They walked down the street holding their partner’s hand with their eyes on someone else. They couldn’t keep their word, yet they hypocritically made worthless promises anyway. He couldn’t stand how unfaithful humans were to their partners. That was why, when he was very young, he’d sworn his mate would never be human. Humans were greedy, cunning, lazy, hypocritical, and unfaithful, just like his damn grandfather. Because of the nature of the werewolf clan, his grandmother had been loyal to his grandfather her whole life. She stood by him while he built his career. But once he got rich, he fell in love with other humans. Thankfully, he ended up dead drunk in the street. But his grandmother couldn’t leave the human world by then. She kept building the business and passed the empire down, generation after generation. Connor was the most outstanding heir wolf of this generation. But because his heat came early, he’d ended up as intimate as two people can be with a very forward human woman. His clan told him that when they came to the hotel to get him, there was no one else in the room. That woman had skipped out long before. She walked into his room, teased and seduced him like that, then slept with him and ran. Well, of course. Humans were frivolous and loose. He should’ve known. Werewolves had only one mate in a lifetime. He could either go find that human woman and settle down with her, or be alone for the rest of his life. She’d run off, and he had no plans to look for her. He’d just taken over the company then and was run off his feet. The moment he came down the mountain, he got to work and put the whole thing out of his mind. So he’d be alone for life. How hard could that be? Company matters gave him even more of a headache. His clan was small, there were far more humans at the company, and the people he did business with were human too. He wasn’t good at communicating or getting along with human men or women. Humans always liked spraying harsh perfume on themselves, and he really hated it. He’d thought he and the human woman he’d been with would have nothing to do with each other for the rest of their lives. There were just too many humans. Any city you picked was packed with them. But last night. On the night of the full moon, deep in the quiet of the night, he heard a young wolf calling. It had a soft, babyish voice. It was still just a pup. When he tracked it over, he actually caught the scent of his own bloodline. That was his pup. He’d only ever been with one human woman. He never thought that woman had gotten pregnant, and then given birth to the pup. Every werewolf pup, at the age of five, needed to drink spring water from the summit of the snowy mountain. Otherwise, the pain of their bones developing would be unbearable. Human medicine didn’t work. It took him one night to find that human woman, Selena. He wanted to take his pup home, but according to the file on her, over the years this woman had worked from before dawn until after dark, raising a pup on her own, and it had been incredibly hard. The pup wasn’t his alone. The pup had been born without his knowing, and he’d done nothing all these years. He had no right to take him away. Then he’d take both mother and son.
