Chapter 1: The Dream Connection
The sun began to set as Emily gazed out her bedroom window. She often found solace in the breathtaking view of the city skyline, a sight that seemed to stretch on forever. But tonight, her mind was preoccupied with something entirely different—her dreams. It had been three months since she had experienced weird and vivid dreams that transported her to another world. In this alternate reality, everything was different. The buildings were adorned with intricate architecture, and the sky shimmered with hues of royal purple and black. But the most peculiar part of these dreams was the presence of another person- a boy. She still does not know who he is or if he even exists in real life. Maybe she is just slowly losing her sanity, but the possibility that this boy is actually living somewhere in the world is driving her nuts. Emily could not quite put her finger on it, but there was an inexplicable connection between her and this boy. They would share intimate conversations, embark on thrilling adventures, and experience emotions so intense that they lingered even after she woke up. She could no longer imagine herself having a peaceful night's sleep where she would not connect with him. As Emily closed her eyes that night, she found herself once again in the mysterious environment that she had called a parallel world in her mind. She stood on the edge of a crystal-clear, purple lake, the wind gently rustling her hair. The boy, whom she had come to know so well, approached, a warm smile spreading across his face. "Emily," he called, his voice carrying a mixture of familiarity and longing. "I have been waiting for you." Emily's heart skipped a beat. "What is this place? Why do I keep dreaming about you?" The boy took a step closer, his eyes brimming with emotion. "I wish I knew, Emily. It feels like we have known each other forever, not a couple of months, but we've never really met." Confusion clouded Emily's mind. "But these dreams... they feel so real. Are you experiencing them too?" He nodded, a mix of excitement and apprehension evident in his eyes. "Yes, Emily. I have been dreaming of you as well. It's as if our minds are connected, traversing the boundaries of our separate worlds." Emily's thoughts raced, trying to make sense of this extraordinary revelation. Is he finally saying that he is real and she could find him after she wakes up? "Do you think there's a reason behind our dreams? Something that ties us together?" His expression turned contemplative. "I believe there must be. Perhaps our dreams are a sign, a message urging us to uncover the truth. I have spent countless nights researching, trying to find answers, but so far, I've come up empty-handed." A sense of determination welled up within Emily. "Then let's find those answers together. We will explore this place, dig deeper into this connection, and we should be able to unlock the secrets of this parallel world." The boy's face lit up with a mixture of hope and gratitude. "Where do you think we should start?" he asked, narrowing his eyebrows. In reality, Emily had no clue where they should start. The question that has been in her heart the most is the boy's name. However, there was a problem. Whenever she asked him what his name was or where he was from, he just smiled with pure sadness in his eyes and gradually disappeared. It was like he turned into fog suddenly and evaporated. She usually woke up right afterwards. The more she tried to get close to the boy, the less often she would see him in her dreams. It was almost like some secret power did not let her see him for a while, so they would not get too close. So Emily did not want to risk it for another time and she just said "We have nowhere to rush." she said while feeling bitterness in her heart. Why couldn't he just tell her who he was? She did not want to spoil the moment they had together, so she shook off the feeling and changed the subject. "But do you mind telling me what you see in front of your side of the portal? Is there anything peculiar?" And so, Emily, unbeknownst to the boy's actual existence in the waking world, embarks on a shared journey of discovery. As days turned into weeks, Emily decided to keep a dream journal, meticulously documenting every detail that she could recall upon awakening. Eventually, she noticed patterns emerging, recurring symbols that seemed to hold significance. A silver key, a blooming rose, a shimmering star—she was sure that each image held a clue, a breadcrumb leading her closer to the truth. In her waking life, Emily continued with her daily routines, attending school and engaging in activities like any other teenager. Of course, deep in her mind she knew that her dreams were most likely just her imagination and nothing of that was real. But her mind was always occupied with the bound that she felt every time she thought about the boy. While dreaming, she would steal glances at him, wondering if he held the answers she sought and what was the meaning behind all of this. Emily's best friend, Lily, noticed her preoccupation and asked, "Hey, Em, you seem a little distracted lately. Is something on your mind?" Emily hesitated for a moment, debating whether to share her secret with Lily. She trusted her friend, but the nature of her dreams and the boy that probably did not exist felt too fantastical to easily explain. She was afraid that her friend would not believe her and would make fun of her. However, the weight of the mystery became too heavy to bear alone, and Emily decided it was time to confide in someone. "Lily, I have something important to tell you," Emily began, her voice laced with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. "I've been having these dreams, these incredibly vivid dreams, where I'm transported to another world. And in those dreams, I've met someone- a boy. It's like we're connected somehow, like our souls are intertwined." Lily's eyes widened, her curiosity piqued. "Wow, that sounds amazing! How long has this been happening?" Emily took a deep breath, relieved by Lily's open-minded reaction. "Since school dance. I think it was about three months ago, but lately, it feels stronger, more intense. We've been trying to make sense of it, to find the reason behind our dreams." Lily's face lit up with enthusiasm. She was that kind of girl that believed in mysteries and hidden messages and meanings behind everything that happened in life. So it wasn't too big of a surprise that she almost squealed in excitement. "That sounds so cool, Emily! Have you found any clues or leads?" Emily nodded, reaching for her dream journal and opening it to a page filled with sketches and notes. "I have been documenting everything. Symbols, images, emotions—it's all here. I believe these dreams are trying to tell me something. I really want to make sense of this and I understand that it sounds a bit ridiculous. But I feel like there is some meaning, some truth for me to find out, to bridge the gap between these two worlds." Lily leaned in, examining the pages of the journal with fascination. "This is like a mystery waiting to be solved. Count me in, Emily. I want to help you find the answers." Emily's heart swelled with gratitude. She had expected disbelief or skepticism, but instead, she found unwavering support from her best friend. Together, they delved into the dream journal, poring over the intricate details and connecting the dots. Days turned into weeks, and the bond between Emily and Lily grew stronger as they explored Emily's dreams collectively. At first they tried to find out anything that would symbolize a silver key. They scooped through mythology books in the library, searched on the internet and even tried out different forums, but it really felt like they were facing a dead end. It had been weeks since Emily and Lily teamed up when, one late Friday evening in the library, Emily's eyes hurt so much that she just shut the book angrily and pouted desperately, throwing her hands up. "Lily, I can't take this anymore! It is no use, we have read everything!" Lily looked up from a dusty book named "Fantastic Signs". One could see that she was very tired as well. "I know, Emily. We have tried so hard to do this that I have not had time to study for the Physics exam. It's already next week and yet I know nothing." Emily looked beat up, barely holding her tears from all the anger and built up emotions. "I know, Lily. Sorry for getting you into my nonsense. It is just my imagination. I should not have told you anything about this. Let's forget about it and move on." She said, full of determination in her eyes. She has been preoccupied too much and if she keeps going like this, her grades will suffer. She couldn't afford it, because she was living off her scholarship for her excellent grades. Lily understood why her friend was so determined. Even though she came from a wealthy family, both girls have been very close since childhood, so she knew very well that Emily could not afford to lose her scholarship. This school was too prestigious for just anyone to afford tuition, so her friend had no other choice. So Lily tried to lighten up the mood. "Let's move on". Lily said while stretching out her hand, offering a handshake with a smile on her face. Emily appreciated this move. "Let's move on". Emily took her hand in hers and shook it with determination in her eyes. She will do all she can to put an end to these stupid dreams.
